.This invention relates to machines for folding over the overlapping edges of the cloth or other materials used as an outside covering for card board covers for books, pencil boxes, paper boxes of various types and the like. Y
The main object of the invention is the provision of a-machine which will feed such card board forms having an outside covering of paper, cloth or the like glued or pasted on one surface thereof with a border or fiapsof the said outside covering projecting, beyond the edges of the card board form and which will automatically fold over the projecting border and paste them to the underside of the form.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a machine that Will eject the form out of the machine after the folding and pasting operation is completed.
A further object of. the invention is the provision of a tucking device in a machine of this nature that will aid in producing a neat joint where the projecting flaps are pasted.

Referring 'to the drawings in detail in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout the different views 15 indicates a slide member slidingly mounted on a bar 16 supported at one end on a frame 17 and at the other end to a cross bar 18 fixed to. blocks 19 suitably secured to a base plate 20 supported on front legs 21 and rear legs 22 forming a supporting frame work for the machine. To a. crossbar 23 connecting the rear legs 22 is secured a bracket 24 to which is pi'votally secured by a pin or rod 25 a footlever 26 connected by a link .27 to a lever arm 28 fixed to a shaft 29 loosely mounted in a bracket 3O secured to a cross bar 31 connecting the front legs 21 of the supporting frames. The shaft 29 has secured thereto a clutch release lever 32 associated with a clutch mechanism 33 on a drive shaft 34 driven by a pulley 35 connected by a belt 36 to a suitable source of power not shown. Upon depressing the foot lever 26 the driving clutch mechanism will be released through the link 27 levers 28 and 29 causing the drive shaft 34 to revolve in the direction indicated by the arrows. A. cam 38 (Figs. 1, 2, and 9') having a cam groove 39 cut inone face thereof will actuate one arm 40 of a bel lcrank lever 41 having a roller 42 at the front thereof in engagement with the cam groove 39 and pivotally mounted at the rear of the machine as at 43. The other arm 44 of the bellcrank lever 41 is connected by means of a link 45 to a lever 16 mounted at the front of the machine on a bracket 47, said lever 46 being him til
connected at its upper end by means of a connecting rod 47 to a depending projection 48 on the slide to which is suitably secured a blank holder 49 upon which is placed a blank 50 (Fig. 12) ofwhich the front and rear flaps 51 and 52 and the side flaps and 54 are to be folded over and pasted to the underside of a card board form 55. As the blank holder 49 withthe blank 50 thereon moves forward a plunger rod 56 having a plate or table 57 mounted at the upper end thereof is moved down to a plane even with the bottom of the blank 50 by means of a cam 58 (Figs. 1, 2- and 10) having a cam groove 59 cut in one face thereof in engagement with a roller 60 on an arm (51 of abellcrank lever 62 having another arm 53 suitably connected to a link 64 the upper end of which is attached to a collar 65 secured to the lower end of the plunger 56. It will be seen from Fig. 6 that as the cross bar 100 is drawn inwardly slide bars 104 to which the cross bar 100 is secured, will impart movement in an inwardly direction to slide bars 105 carrying the posts 103 which are connected by a tie bar 106 by means of reversing links 107 and 108 pivoted at 109 and 110 and suitably associated with the slide bars 10 and 105. The entire slide structure is guided at its upper end by a post 112 fixed to the plate 89, operating in a guide slot 113 in a guide member 114 and by rollers 115 on the post 112 rolling on a surface 116 of the guide member 114. wiper plate 133is moved inwardly by a lever 146 on the shaft 18"? said lever having a link 147 connected -thereto atone end of the link and the opposite end thereof the link connects with a depending lever 148 7 (Figs. 1 and 2) fast on ashaft 1'49lj'ournaled in a bracket 150 fijxedto the fraihefof the machine, said shaft 149 has fixed thereto at itsoppositejend al'ever 151 joined by a link 152 to a depending ear 1'53 of a slide 155 normally drawninwa'rdly by aspri'ng 156 and carrying'a fi'ame work 157 supporting a plate 158 onwhieh' the wiper plate 133 is resiliently "mounted. Atthis stage of the operation oftheniachine'the blank with its flaps bent under and pasted is brought down on the lower plunger table to a height even with an ejector "160 which is operated to eject the completed blank by a spring 161 pulling on a lever162 connected to the ejector by a link 163 one end "of which being associated with the lever 162 and the other end to a block 164 fast to a slide bar 165 ,to which the ejector 160 is made fast. The lever 162 is permitted to actuate the ejector 160 to eject the blank 'out of'the machine through'a chute 166 when a. roller 167 on a depending lever 168 fixed on a shaft 169 which also carries thelever 162, is drawn by the spring 161 into a depression 170 of a cam 171 mounted on the shaft'34. It will be understood in this connection that the edges of the finished blank extends beyond the ends of the lower plunger table 57 and the ejector 160 is thus enabled to eject the blank 01f saidtable. I
The sequence of the operations of the machine is as follows: A blank having "an outside covering of cloth, paper or the like with its fiapsextending beyond'a card board form is placed on theholder49, the foot lever is pressed to releasethe clutch 33 causing the cam shaft 34 to revolve moving the holder with .the blank on it towards the inside of the machine. The ejector 160 is moved out of the path of the blank, the upper and lower plunger tables grip the blank and carry same upwardly to fold and paste the front and rear flaps to the underside of the form and tuck them at their corners, the plunger tables continue to move upwardly and-the side flaps are folded and pasted to the underside of the form which is then movedinto a plane substantially even with the ejector 160 and is ejected from the machine through the chute 166.
The blank holder 49 comprises two like arms spaced far enough apart laterally to allow for the insertion of a blank 50 to be gripped between the plunger tables 57 and when the said blank holder is moved towards the center of the machine.
From the'foregoing it'will be seen that I have provided a machine adapted to feed blanks having an outside covering pasted on a form and automatically fold the edges of the covering on the underside of theform and when thus completed eject-same from the machine in rapid succession and produce a neat product in a manner heretofore un known in the art.
'Having described my invention what I claim'as new is- 1. In amachine of the nature described, a blank holder adapted'tohave a blank having 'proj'ecti'ng'flaps placed thereon, means for advancing and retracting the blank holder, movable gripping means in the path and on opposite sides of the blank holder for removing the blank from theholder and means disposed in the path of the gripping means for folding the flaps on said blank.
2. In a r'nachine of the nature described, a slide, a blank holder associated with said slide'adapte'd to hold a blank with projecting flaps thereon, means for operating the slide and holder in a forward direction, a carrier, comprising a lower table plunger adapted to be moved into a plane even with thelower surface of the blank, an upper table plunger adapted to be lowered to a plane even with the upper surface of the blank to grip the blank between said plunger tables when the blank holder is in forward position, means for moving the blank between the upper and lower table plungers to a position for folding some of the said flaps and means for returning the holder to normal position.
3. In a machine of the nature described, a slide, a blank holder associated with said slideada'pted to hold a blank with projecting flaps thereon, means for operating the slide and holder in a forward direction, a lower plunger table adapted to be moved into a plane even with the lower surface of the blank, an upper plunger table adapted to be lowered to a plane even with the up per surface of the blank to grip the blank between said plunger tables when the blank holder is in forward position, a plurality of wiper plates in the path of some of the projecting flaps, and means for moving the blank between the wiper plates to bend the said flaps on the blank.

In a machine of the nature described, a slide, a blank holder associated with said slide adapted to hold a blank with projecting flaps thereon, meansfor operating the slide and holder in a forward direction, a lower plunger table adapted to'be moved into a plane even with the lower surface of the blank, an upper plunger table adapted to be lowered to a plane even' with'the upper surface of the blank to grip the blank between said plunger tables when the blank holder is in forward position, a'pluralityof resiliently mounted wiper plates in the path of some of the projecting flaps and means for moving the blank between the wiper plates for folding the said flaps around the blank.
5. In a machine of the nature described, a slide, a blank holder associated with said slide adapted to hold a blank with projecting flaps thereon, means for operating the slide and holder in a forward direction, a lOWGl plunger table adapted to be moved into a plane even with the lower surface of the blank, an upper plunger table adapted to be lowered to a plane even with the upper surface of the blank to grip the blank between the said plunger tables when the. lank holder is in forward position, plunger raising means comprising a lever associated with said lower plunger table, a cam having a cam slot therein, a roller on said lever adapted to operate in the cam slot to raise the plunger table to predetermined position, a plurality of wiper plates at substair tially the raised position of the plunger table and means for moving the wiper plates inwardly to fold the flaps under the blank 6. in a machine of the nature described, a slide, a blank holder associated. with said slide adapted to hold a blank with projecting flaps thereon, means for operating the slide and holder in a forward direction, a lower plunger table adapted to be moved into a plane even with the lower surface of the blank, an upper plunger table adapted to be lowered to a plane even. with the upper surface of the blank to grip the blank between said plunger tables when the blank holder is in forward position, means for moving the blank between the upper and lower table nlungers to a position for folding some of the said flaps, a plurality of 1 slides, a plurality of wipers resiliently mounted on said slides and means for moving the slides inwardly of the machine to carry the wipers under the front and rear flaps and fold same under the blank.
7. In a machine of the nature described, a
slide, a blank holder associated with said slide adapted to hold a blank with projecting flaps thereon, means for operating the slide and holder in a forward direction, a lower plunger table adapted to be moved into a plane even with the lower surface of the blank, an upper plunger table adapted to be lowered to a plane even with the upper surface of the blank to grip the blank between said plunger tables when the blank holder is in forward position, means for moving the blank between the upper and lower plunger tables to a position for folding some of the said flaps, a plurality of slides, a plurality of wipers resiliently mounted on said slides, means for moving the slides inwardly of the machine to carry the wipers under the front and rear flaps and fold same under the blank, resiliently mounted members on the upper plunger table overlying the ends of the folded flaps, resiliently mounted members associated'with the wiper plates underlying the ends of the folded flaps and the upper plunger table resilient members and means for applying extra pressure to the upper plunger table to tuck the ends of the flaps.
8. In a machine of the nature described, a slide, a blank holder associated with said slide adapted to hold a, blank with projecting flaps thereon, means for operating the slide and holder in a forward direction, a lower plunger table adapted to be moved into aplane even with the lower surface of the blank, an upper plunger table adapted to be lowered to the blank between said plunger tables when the blank holder is in forward position, means for moving the lank between the upper and-lower table plungers to a position for folding some of the said flaps, a plurality of slides, a plurality of wipers resiliently mounted on said slides, means for moving the slides inwardly of the machine to carry thewipers under the front and rear flaps and fold same under the blank means for tucking the ends of the folded flaps, a second set of slides operably connected one with the other, a resiliently mounted wiper plate on each of said slides, means for raising the blank to a level substantially even with the top of the second set of wiper plates and means for moving the said wiper platesinwardly to fold the remaining flaps under the blank.
9. In a machine of the nature described, blank holder adapted to receive a blank having projecting fiaps thereon, means for sliding the holder forwardly to predetermined a lower table plunger posi tlOll,
' adapt-ed to be moved to a position under the blank when the holder is in forward position, an upper plunger table adapted to be moved simultaneously with the lower plunger to a position over the blank, me r for returning the blank holder to normal position, a plurality of slides operably connected, one to the other, a wiper plate on each of said slides, means for raising the blank to a level substantially in line with the top of the wiper plates, means for opei aring the wiper plates to fold some of the flaps under the blank, means for tucking the of the folded flaps, a second set of slides operably connected one with the other, a wiper plate on each of the said slides, means for raising the blank to a level substantially even withthe top of the second set of wiper plates, means for operating the said wiper plates to fold the remaining flaps, means for lowering the blank and an ejector adapted to eject the. finished blank when in the lowered position,
, 1.0, In a machine of the nature described, a plunger table adapted to receive a blank having a covering pasted onone side thereof with a plurality of-fiaps extending beyond the blank and a second plunger coacting with the first mentioned plunger to grip the blank. and carry same to a predetermined position, means for folding the flaps around edges of the blank and simultaneously pasting same to one side of the blank while it is being gripped and means for tucking the ends of the folded flapswhile in said predetermined position.
11. In a machine of the nature described,
a plunger table adapted to receive a blank having a covering pasted on one side thereof with av plurality of flaps extending beyond the blank and a second plunger table coacting with the first mentioned plunger table to grip the blank and carry same to a predetermined position and means for folding the flaps around edges of the blank and pasting same to one side of the blank, together with means for carrying the blank to a different position and means for folding the remaining unfolded flaps in this latter position.
12. In a machine of the nature described, a. plunger table adapted to receive a blank having a covering pasted on one side thereof with a plurality of flaps extending beyond the blank and a, second plunger table coacting with the first mentioned plunger table to grip'the blank and carry same to a predetermined position and means for folding the flaps around edges of the blank and pasting same to one side of the blank, means for tucking the ends of the folded flaps while in said predetermined position and means to carry the blank to a further position where the remaining flaps are folded around the edges of the blank and pasted to one side thereof.

In a machine of the nature described, a movable carrier adapted to receive and grip a blank having extending flaps thereon, blank flap folding and pasting means in the path of the carrier to simultaneously fold andpaste the flaps on the blank and an oscillating blank ejector associated with the carrier to eject the blank therefrom..
14. In combination with a movable carrier adapted to receive and grip a blank with associated with said slide.
15. In combination with a movable carrier adapted to receive a blank with flaps extending beyond the blank, flap folding means comprising a slide and a resiliently mounted wiper plate associated with said slide and a tucking means comprising a pivoted and resiliently mounted member, associated with the wiper plate, a resiliently mounted member associated with the carrier, coacting with the first mentioned resiliently mounted member and means for act-uatine said resiliently mounted members.

In combination with a movable carrier adapted to receive a blank with flaps extending beyond the blank, flap folding means comprising a slide and a resiliently mounted wiper plate associated with said slide and means for guiding said wiper plate, conun'ising a post associated with the Wiper plate,a platform having'a slot therein to receive said post and rollers on said post adapted to ride on said platform.
17. In a machine of the nature described, a slide, a blank holder associated with said slide adapted to hold a blank with projecting flaps thereon, means for operating the slide and holder in a forward direction to a predetermined position; a carrier adapted to grip the blank, folding means associated with the carrier, and means for raising the carrier to a position where some of said flaps are folded.

A movable carrier adapted to grip a blank provided with extending flaps, means for raising the carrier to a predetermined position, flap folding means in the path of the carrier at this position, and means in cooperative engagement with the carrier for applying extra pressure to same at this said position. a
19. A movable carrier adapted to grip a blank, provided with extending flaps, means for raising the carrier to a pre-determined posit-ion, flap folding means in the path of the carrier, at this point, means for moving the carrier to a further position, and flap folding means in the path of the carrier at this further position to fold the remaining flaps.
20. In amachine for folding cover edges, a tucking device for tucking the said folded edges, comprising a movable carrier, a member resiliently mounted on the carrier, a slidably mounted plate in the path of the carrier, a member resiliently mounted on the plate adapted to co-act with the first mentioned resilient member, and means for co-operatively engaging said resilient members.
21. A machine for folding over extending flaps of a blank, comprising a blank holder, means for moving the holder to a predetermined position, movable means for gripping and removing the blank from the blank holder when the holder is in said position and flap folding means in the path of the gripping means.
22. A machine for folding over extending flaps of a blank, comprising a blank holder, means for moving the holder to a predetermined position, movable means for gripping and removing the blank from the blank holder and bring it to a predetermined position and means in the path of the gripper at this position to fold the flaps around the blank While it is being gripped,

A machine ofthe nature described, comprising means for feeding blanks having flapsthereon to a predetermined position, oppositely disposed movable plnngers in the path of the blank feeder for gripping the blank, means for moving the gripper to a predetermined position, means in the path of the gripper at this position for folding the flaps around the edges of the blank While so gripped and oscillating means associated with the gripper for ejecting the finished blank.
24. A machine of the nature described, comprising blank feeding means, a movable gripper in the path of the blank feeding means for gripping the blank, means for moving the gripper to a predeterminedposition; movable and resilient blank flap folding means in the path of the gripper at the said position, and resilient means associated with the flap folding means for tucking portions of some of the flaps.
