STEAM BOILER.
Application filed March 4, 1927. Serial No. 172,759.
The present invention has relation to improvements in steam boilers.
An object of the invention is to direct the flame and other products of combustion against the inner surface of the boiler` to retard them in their passage through the same, thus greatly increasing the steaming qualities of the boiler.
lThe nature of the invention consists in spirally arranged difl'users or baille plates in the form of pins and corrugations or ribs so as to cause the products of combustionto pass upwardly in a spiral course.
Another important object of the invention Vlies in the provision of a heater characterized by its inherent simplicity and low cost of construction, and by the fact that it contains a minimum number of parts apt to get out of order from corrosion or otherwise and by the fact that it contains no internal pipe liable to become foul.
l@Vith the above and numerous other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Now having particular reference to the drawings, our novel boiler constitutes the provision of an open-ended cylindrical shell 5 of desired capacity that is provided at its upper end with a conventional form of head 6 within which is an enlarged central opening 7.
lVithin the shell 5 at the lower end thereof is an interior-,shell 8 functioning as the fire box for the boiler.v This shell is also of cylindrical formation, being open at its opposite ends and is of slighly less diameter than the diameter of the outer shell 5 providing a water space there-between. The lower end of this interior shell 8 is flared outwardly at 9 that serves as the bottom wall of the boiler while depending therefrom is a skirt 10 that closely engages the interior of the shell 5 and is suitably secured thereto. The upper end of the interior shell 8 is provided with a conventional head 12 that is also formed with a central circular opening 13 in registration with the opening 7 of the head 6, and within which is arranged one end of a. relativelv wide cylindrical flue pipe 14, the other end thereof The upper head 17 7 of the drum 15 and the tube 19 there are disposed annular ribs 20. These ribs 20 are preferably formed integral with the drum land the tube 19. These ribs are formed in sections as is more clearly illustrated in Fig. 4l so as to provide spirally arranged spaces 21 in which are received spiral fins 22. The spiral fins 22 are wider than the ribs 20 as is clearly illustrated in both Figs. 1 and 2. These fins 2O may actually catch the interior surfaces of the interior shell 8 and the flue pipe 111 if desired and as shown in the drawing. It is to be noted that the spiral of the fin about the tube 19 is opposite to that about the drum.
From the above detailed description it will be seen that the ribs function as ballles to retard the llame, smoke, and other products of combustion in their spiral path caused by the spiral fins 22 about tlie drum 15 and the tube 19. In this way the maximum heat is obtained from these p roducts of combustion. Thus the boiler' will be capable o f economical operation and maximum etliciency.
It is thought that the construction, utility, and advantages of this invention will now beapparent to those skilled in this art withouta more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since. in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent that after changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrange ment oit parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing;r any of its advantages. Having thus described our invention what we claim as new is:
l. A boiler ot the class described including, in combination, a fir-eben, a flue pipe extending from the fire-box, a tube within the pipe, a drum within the fire-box, means about the drum and about the tube for causing the products ot combustion to rise in a spiral path, said means comprising,- a spirally arranged iin, and a plurality of ribs between the tins, said ribs being` circumferentially disposed about the drum and tube.

A boiler ot the class described including, in combination, a {ire-box, a flue pipe extending from the fire-box, a tube within the pipe, a drum within the i'ebox, means about the drum and about the tube for cans" ingl the products of combustion to rise in a spiral path, said means comprising a spifrally arranged iin, and a plurality o1 ribs between the fins, said ribs being circumferentially disposed about the drum and tube, the bottom end of the drum being' of an inverted cone-shaped tor-mation.
