of the dome D, with the disc 1 contacting with the inner side of the wall of the dome D, and with the nut locatedoutside said wall. A cushioning gasket 11 also lits i around the nipple 9, and it contacts with the 1:- 1, 2 and 3.
Formed entirely around and projecting centerward from near the forward end of the nipple 9 is a ridge or flange 12, shown only in L1 which is for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
Numeral 13 denotes a three-way or T-fi-tting, one end ofwhicli is threaded onto the forward end of the nipple 9, the forwardend of said fitting being closed byv the screwplug 14, and the third portion of said fitting entends downward at an angle, with the pipe 15 threaded therein, as shown. The purpose of locating the third portion of said nipple at an angle, is to permit the pipe 15 to eX- tend outward in order to avoid contact thereof with the boiler A.v
The pipe 15 leads downward from the fitting 13 to a point directly in front of the drive-wheel C.
Threaded into the rear end of the member 5, that is into the yaperture Z, is a comparatively small pipe 16, which extends horizontally from the member 5 to a point at the rear side of the dome D where it passes therethrough, and then extends back into the cab B to where ,it is provided with a valve 17, which should be within rea-ch of the engineer in the cab. y e
A like pipe 18 extends from the valve 17 to a source of compressed air, as for instance the tank E, shown in Fig. 1.
It will now be understood that if my device be installed as set forth, the valve 17 being closed and with the dome D filled with sand, that the operation will be substantially as follows. IVhen it is desired to apply sand in front of the wheel C the engineer has only to open the valve 17, which will cause a strong current of airv to rush through the pipes 18 and 1G, into the nozzle 6, or 7 from which nozzle the air will be directed into the body of sand, driving it forward into and through Vthe nipple 9, into the fitting 13,y and from there it will be directed downward, assisted bv gravity, through the pipe 15, and delivered at the point desired.
It is apparent that as the air passing from said nozzle will carry with it a certain amount of sand which is the line vof its travel, and as the sand is' thus removed it will continue to settle down and keep the space full between the disc 1 and the plate t.
And even though the sand be damp it can not become clogged up, as the pressure 'of air will keep it cleaned out.

in the event the passage should become otherwise would require an entirely new t7 member 13, plus the time and labor of its replacement. kThe flange 12 holds back the sand so it will not be jolted into the pipe 15 when the air is not turned on.
t It is to be understood that the pipe 15 may have branches leading to other wheels, in addition to that shown, so that any number of drive wheels may be provided with sand simultaneously. Also it is to be understood that ione of my devices ma each side of the dome D, eac supplying sand to the wheels on their respective sides. And also that the pipe 16 may branch inside the dome D, whereby any number of my devices connected to the dome may be all operated at one time bythe operation of the valve 17.
I desire that it be understood that various changes may be made in the several details herein set forth without departing` from the spirit of the invention Aand without sacrificing any of the advantages thereof which are new and useful.
Having now fully shown and described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isw
1. In combination with a locomotive having' a sand-dome thereon, drive-wheels, and a cab connected therewith; an air sanding device connected with the sand-dome and comprising a body member located inside the sand-dome and consisting` of a disc contacting with the inner side of the wall of the sand-dome, arms extending` inward from said disc, a plate connecting the inner ends of said arms with a swell portion in the center of said. plate; a nozzle threaded into said swell portion and directed toward an aperture formed through said disc. a nipple extending` through the wall of the dome and threaded into said aperture in the disc, a nut threaded on said nipple and adapted to be clamped upon the outer side of the dome, a T-fltting secured on the outer forward end of said nipple, a pipe leading down to a drive wheel from said fitting, a plug` secured in the forward end of said fitting, an air conducting pipe leading` from said nipple to the cab, a valve onv the rear end of said air pipe,

2. An air sanding device for locomotives, comprising a disc, a plate spaced from the disc and integrally connected therewith, a nipple detachably connected to said disc and openingv therethrough, a nozzle located in the center of said plate and directed toward the interior of said nipple, lneans for supplying' compressed air to said nozzle to be directed from the nozzle across the space between the disc and the plate into said nipple, a flange iorined around inside the nipple, a fitting secured on the outer `end of said nipple, and a 'U5 pipe leading` from said fitting.
3. An air sanding device comprising, in
combination lwith a, sand-dome, a disc contacting with the inside of the dome, a plate spaced inward from said disc, arinsconnecting the disc and the plate, a nozzle ext-ending outward from lthe center of said plate and toward the center of the disc, means for supplying compressed air to pass through said nozzle, a nipple connected to said disc and extending outward through an opening .in said donne7 an angular fitting connected with the outer end of said nipple, there being an opening in said fitting which opening is in ahneinent with said nipple, and a replaceable closure for said opening.
