This invention relates to loading devicesand-more particularly to car loading implements, although it may be employed with equal advantage for other purposes.
it contemplates more especially the provision of means whereby fragile articles may be efiiciently packed in large quantities for shipment without subjecting. them to destructive impacts imparted thereto consequent to the travel or movement of the conveyance.
The tremendous breakage incident to the shipping of fragile articles such as earthenware jars, has necessitated the adaptation of shock absorbing eXpedients commonly termed fillers which although effective, neverthel-ess have not proven entirely satisfactory with known methods of packing.
It. has been found desirable to pack fragile articles very compactly to prevent relative movement therebetween. Thus, the Vl? bratory impulses imparted to the container or conveyance will not be transmitted to the articles individually, but collectively, thereby in a measure vibrating the articles in unison with the conveyance without damage to either. The structure selected for illustration is shown. applied to a conveyance, in this instance a freight car of standard construction wherein an appreciable number of fragile articlessuch as earthern jars 11 are carefully packed in superposed relation with a suitable filler such as prairie hay 12 interposed between the individual ars toprevent direct contact therebetween, the filler servmg to provide a shock absorbing medium,
It is important to note that the shocks and vibrations imparted to the articles 11 inci-v dent to the travel of the conveyance 10, will cause movement between the articles which results in their destruction with appreciable damage. To eliminate or at least reduce the possible movement between the articles 11 to a negligible factor, it has been found essential or at least highly desirable to com pactly arrange the articles 11 by'increasing the confinement thereof; thus preventing movement therebetween and eliminating the damage thereto consequent of such move ment.
In the present embodiment, the means for increasing: the confinement of the articles 11 within the conveyance 10. after they are suitably arranged therein, comprises a standard 13, in this instance a vertically disposed I-beam, it being maintained in such position by a floor bracket 14 of common construc tion rigidly secured to an extremity of the I-beam 13 in any appropriate manner, The fact that the standard 13 constitutes the stationary member of the means herein employed for the purpose set forth, it is desirable to provide stabilizers therefor at a point removed from the floor of the conveyance. The stabilizers, in the present embodiment, consist of extensible members 15, in this instance two, pivotally associated with the standard 13 as at 16 to provide divergent arms adapted to abut against a portion of the conveyance 10. The members consist of a tubular shell 17 which telescopically receives a rod 18 provided with a plurality of apertures 19 along the length thereof iii) to receive an appropriate pin 20 for limiting the inward movement of the rods 19 which obviously may be hollow or solid as commercial practice may dictate. The telescopic rod 18 terminates in a bent extremity 21 engageable with a vertical surface, in this instance with a ceiling beam 22 of the conveyance 10, whereby the spaced extensible members 15 serve to stabilize the standard 13 in order to rigidly maintain the latter in a vertical position. and to render it selectively detachable with convenience.
The quantity of articles packed within the conveyance depends largely on the size of the shipment; however, it is possible to pack the conveyance, such as a freight car, commencing with the ends thereof, to the extent of the doors whereupon a partition 23 is provided to confine the articles 11. Disposed adjacent the partition 23 is a wheeled movable frame 24 supported on suitable casters 25 for a purpose which will hereinafter be apparent. The standard 13 being preferably spaced from the partition 23, has associated therewith means, in this instance, a screw-jack 26 of standard construction which has a bracket 27 removably secured to an end thereof to slidably engage the standard 13 whereby the screw-jack 26 may be maintained thereon in any selected position, the other end of the screw-jack 26 impinging against the movable frame 2& which is preferably provided with socket plates 28 to receive the extensible portion 29 of the screw jack 26. As shown, the bracket 27 consists of a pair of spaced plates 30" and 31, having carriage bolts 32 interposed therebetween to receive the standard 13 therein, it being understood that the screw jack 26 is secured to the plate 30 in any appropriate manner.
Vith the arrangement of parts thus far described, it will be apparent that manipulation of the screw jack 26 in the ordinary manner will cause the member '29 thereof to move outwardly in engagement with the movable frame 24 to impart move ment to the partition 23 whereby the confinement of the articles 11 is increased to such a degree of compactness as to prevent movement between the articles, thereby preventing breakage or damage thereto caused by vibration incident to the travel of the vehicle.
,iVhen the partition 23 has been moved to its desired position, the bottom thereof may be secured against movement by means of nails or other fasteners whereupon the jack 26 may be slidably raised to another position to effect corresponding movement of the upper portion of the partition 23 so that it may assume a vertical position.

scription, that a novel portable device has been provided to compactly arrange an appreciable number of articles within a container to eliminate or at least decrease the breakage thereof to a minimum.
I am aware that many changes may be made, and numerous details of the construction may be varied through a widerange without departing from they principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a container adapted to receive articles therein, of means for compactly arranging said articles, said means including a movable member for confining said articles within a portion of said container, a vertically disposed stationary member fixable to'said container, and means slidable on said stationary member for urging said movable member against said articles. v
2. The combination with a. container adapted to receive articles therein, of means for compactly arranging said articles, said means including a movable member for confining said articles within a portion of said container, a vertically disposed stationary member fixable to said container, and means slidable on said stationary member for urg ing said movable member against said articles, said slidable means comprising a screw-jack adjustable for concentration on selective portions of said movable member.
3. The combination with a container adapted to receive articles therein, of means for compactly arranging said articles, said means including a movable member for confining said articles within a portion of said container, a vertically disposed stationary member fiXable to said container, and means slidable on said stationary member for urging said movable member against said articles, said slidable means comprising a screw-jack adjustable for concentration on selective portions of said movable member. and another jack pivotally associated with Stationary member, said pivotally associated jack being shiftable to a position parallel to said other jack.
4. The combination with a conveyance adapted to receive articles therein, of means for compactly arranging said articles, said means including a wheeled movable member adapted to confine said articles in a portion of said conveyance, a vertically disposed column fixable to said conveyance, said column having a floor supporting bracket therein, extensible diverging members pivotally secured to said column to engage the conveyance at spaced points to maintain said column in fixed position, and means associated with said column to cause said movable member to increase the confinement of said articles.
5. In a device of the character described. a wheeled movable member, a vertical col umn having a floor supporting bracket thereon, extensible stabilizing members associated with said column, and means for varying the spaced relation between said movable member and column.
6. In a device of the character described, a Wheeled movable member, a vertical column having a floor supporting bracket thereon, extensible stabilizing members associated with said column, means for varying the spaced relation between said movable member and column, and means auxiliary to and spaced from said urging means.
7. In a device of the character described, a wheeled movable member, a vertical column having a floor supporting bracket thereon, extensible stabilizing members associated with said column, means for varying the spaced relation between said movable members and column, and means auX- iliary to and spaced from said urging means. said urging and auxiliary means comprising individually operable screw-jacks.
8. In a device of the character described. a wheeled movable member, avertically disposed stationary member, means for stabilizing said stationary member in its operative position, and means slidably and re movably mounted on said stationary member for actuating said movable member.
9. The combination with a' container adapted to receive articles therein, of a loading device for compactly arranging said articles comprising a stationary member, a movable member, and means interposed between said members for actuating said movable member, said'stationary member and said means being adapted to be entirely removed from said container when said articles are compactly arranged.
10. The combination with a car adapted to receive articles therein, of means for compactly arranging said articles comprising an end wall for said articles, a shiftable com -pacting device for engaging said wall, an
abutment removably anchored to said car, and means between said abutment and shifta-ble device for shifting the latter for compacting said articles, said last named means holding said device in shifted position for securement of said wall, said device abutment and means being removable after the securement of said wall.
