I t l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
GUSTAV BRUEOK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN APPARATUS FOR MOUNTING FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,731, dated May 25, 1875; application filed May 7, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV BRUEcK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Implement for Mounting Fans, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section in the plane 00 m, Fig. 2.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the combination of an adjustable guide for the leaves with an adjustable guide for the folded covering of a fan, and with a follower fitting between the guide for the folded covering in such a manner that the operation of securing the leaves between the folds of the covering is materially facilitated.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a board, in which is secured a pin, a, to receive the ends of the leaves 13 of a fan, each of said leaves being provided with a hole just large enough to drop over said pin. On the surface of the board A are arranged two guides, GD, each of which consists of two jaws, which are fastened to the boards by screws 0 61 passing through slots 0 fin the jaws, so that said jaws can be moved toward and from each other, and that they can be adjusted for fans of different sizes. The jaws G are adjusted so that the handles of the fan-leaves can be dropped between them, while the jaws D are so adjusted that the folded covering for the fan can be placed between the same, said covering being made of any suitable textile fabric, or of paper, and folded in the required shape before being introduced between the jaws D. Between the jaws D is fitted a follower, E, which must be changed for fans of difierent sizes. After the covers of the fan and its leaves have been prepared and the jaws O D have been adjusted in the required position, I first place one of the covers on the pin a, and be tween the jaws O D, its inner surface being coated with glue or other suitable cement;
then I put the folded covering for the fan be tween the jaws D, causing the first fold of said folded covering to adhere to the covering; then I coat the shank of the first leaf with glue, or other suitable cement, raise the first or lowest fold of the covering, insert said shank into said fold, drop the body of the leaf between the jaws O, and over the pin a, and finally press down the follower E E, so as to cause the first fold of the covering to adhere to the sides of the shank of the first leaf. Then I raise the subsequent folds of the covering, insert the shanks of the successive leaves, after having previously coated them with cement, and by a pressure on the follower, each of said shanks is caused to adhere to its fold. Finally, the second cover of the fan, being coated on its inner surface with cement to the required distance, is placed between the jaws O D, and by pressing it down it is caused to adhere to the last fold of the covering, and after the cement has set sufficiently I remove the fan out of thejaws O D, and then I unite the covers and the leaves by means of a pivot, in the usual manner.
. By these means the folded covering is retained in the required position to receive the shanks of the fan-leaves, and the operation of mounting a fan can be effected in a comparatively short time.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an implement for mounting fans, the combination of leaf-guides G O and guides D D, for the folded covering of a fan, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a follower, E, with the guides D D, for the folded covering, and with the leaf-guides G O, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
GUSTAV BRUEOK. n s.]
