Application fled December 6, 1928. Serial No. 152,873.
This invention relates to what may be conveniently defined in the art as improved window flashing, the same having more particular reference to a metallic structure which is used in association with the window frame and wall ofjth'e building to provide a substantially water'and weather-proof joint between. the window frame, and said wall.
It iswell known that in ordinary dwelling structures, the window frames are mounted in the wall openings in such a way as to provide a defective -joint and during driving rain and storm, the elements find way thru the defective joints in the interior'of the dwelling, frequently ruining wall paper, plaster, etc.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide an effident structure which may be used in association with the ordinary building structures for providin a water-tight joint between the window rame and wall.
The articular structural details for accomplis ing the desired results will become apparent from the following description and drawings. V
In the accompanying drawings forming'a part of this application, and in which like numerals are em loyed to designate like parts throughout t e same Figure 1 is an outside elevational view of the invention showin it as it isassociated with the window an building wall structures.
Fi 2 is an inside view showing more in detai how the flashing structure is associated with the window frame.
Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken approximately upon the plane of the line 4-4: of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a per ective end view of the tog strip of the flas ing.
ig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the side strips of the same, and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one corner of one of the boards of the window frame facin Referring now to the drawings, and particularly to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the reference character 1 designates generally 'the facing structure of the window frame 2, which frame includes usual guide strips, parting strips, etc. In other words, t e frame is of ordinary construction. In addition, I have shown the sill and sub-sill structure. Moreover, as shown in Fig. 1, the reference character 3 designates boards of the building wall structure.
It is not necessary however, that the invention be used in association with a wooden building. The improved flashing structure embodies a top stri (see Fig. 5), designated by the reference c aracter 4, a pair of duplicate side strips 5, (see Fig. 6),and a specially designed bottom strip 6 (see Fig. 2).
These preferably, are of copper of appropriate gauge. The top strip as represented in Fig. 5, has intermediate portion of its lower edge bent at right angles as at 7 to bear upon the to piece of the window frame 2 as represented in Fig. 3. It is bent between its upper. and lower edges to provide a longitudinal rib 8 which is fitted into a groove formed in the inner face of the complemental board member of the window fac- Ft will be noticed that at the ends, this rib is split as at 9, the end portion 10 of which is bent down so as not to interfere with the desired overlap of the adjacent u per end portion of the complemental si e strips 5, see Fig. 2). Attention is also directed to a vertical slit 11 which serves a purpose to be later described. 7
Attention is now directed to Fig. 6 wherein it will be seen that the side strips 5 are also provided on their outer faces with vertically extending ribs 12 formed by bending the metal between its ends in a well known manner. Also on the inner edges are right angularly disposed flanges 13 which cooperate with the window frame 2, as represented in Fig. 4. It will also be noted that the u per end portions of these strips are provi ed with inward extensions or tongues 14 which hang upon the window frame structure as represented plainly in Fig. 2.
As far as the lower strip 6 is concerned, this is sim ly in the form of a flat iece of metal whic is not provided with a d or rib, but is simply notched out at its center so as to permit the end portions 15 to be brought into overlappin relation with the lower end portions of tie side strips 5 as represented in Fig. 2.
The inner faces of the board members of the frame structure 2 are of course formed with grooves 16 (see Fig. 7) which serve .o accommodate the ribs 8 and 12 of the respective top and side stri s of the flashing structure. The ribs are orced firmly into the groove, thus bringing the right angularly disposed flanges in contact with adjacent portions of the window frame structure, and the ribs are so located as to allow the outer edge of the strips to project a considerable distance beyond the corresponding edge portions of the board of the facing 1, thus when the structure is installed, it has the appearance shown in Fig. '1,
The weather boards of the wall structure may be brought into overlapping relation with this, so as to allow the major portion of the copper to be dis osed or entirely cover it, as the building p ans require. In any event, however, the' flashing will serve to rovide a substantially weather-proof joint in the frame structure and Wall board.
It is believed that by considering the description in connection with the drawin s, a clear understanding of the invention will be had; Therefore, a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is In a metal flashing structure for windows wherein the window frame is provided with an outer casing surrounding. the window frame provided with longitudinal grooves on the innerside thereof, said flashing structure comprising the top strip a nd a pair of flanges provided with bent ribs formed intermediate their longitudinal edges for engage-- bottom strip for disposition in overlapping relation with the lower end portion of the side strips.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ALFRED HOKANSON.
