MEANS FOR AGITATING AND STIRRING llIIOLTEN METAL IN OPEN-HEARTH AND LIKE FURNACES.
Application filed May 7 1926, Serial No. 107,393, and in Great Britain September 28, 1925.
theappliance consists of a hollow metal arm 2 covered on the portion which enters the furnace With any suitable refractory material, paddles of refractory materlal being fixed at or near to the end of the arm, the whole.
arm is rotated by suitable mechanism without the furnace, this would be carried on a truck running ,on the charging platform parallel with the furnaces or be supported by an overhead travelling crane or gantry. The arm by means of'the mechanism can be extended into or withdrawn from the furnace in a horizontal position, but when the arm has entered'the door of'the furnace the end of the arm is lowered by .the mechanism so that the paddles enter the bath at an angle and is rotated in this position, thereby agitating the metal with the object of assisting the impurities in coming to the surface. Air may be admitted under pressure through the hollow metal core of the arm for cooling purposes and pass through suitable ducts formed in the core and refractory material to assist the oxidation of the impurities in the molten metal'and reduce time taken for the charge.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect I have appended hereto a sheet of drawings illustrating same, wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing the device in use.
Fig.2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the tilting mechanism. a v Fi 5 is a longitudinal view of the assembled paddles.
Fig. 6 is an end view of the paddker, and
Fig. 7 is a side View of the front end of the shaft for rotating the paddler.
Referring to the drawings the paddler comprises a suitable number and configuration of blades 1 carried by the front end of a hollew metal arm 2. The blades 1 are The arm 2 is hollow and is fitted at its rear. 7
end over the front end of a shaft 6 to which it is locked by a dog clutch device 7 part of which is carried by the arm 2 and the other part by the shaft 6. The nozzle 8, paddler 1 and the arm 2 are covered with a suitable refractory material.
The shaft 6 is rotated from an electric motor or other power unit" 8 which rotates a worm shaft 9, the worm 10 of which meshes with a worm wheel 11 on the shaft 6. Bearings 12 which support the shaft 6 for rotation are carried by brackets 13 which are slidable along a pair of parallel guide rods 14 supported by a rectangular frame 15. Suitable abutments are provided to prevent the shaft 6 moving axially or endwise relatively to the bearings 12, so that if the brackets 13are moved backwards and forwards along the guide rods 14- the paddler 1. can be retracted .or advanced as desired. A suitable method of effecting this movement of the brackets 18 is by means of one or pair of endless chains 16 each engaging an abutment on one of the brackets 13. Each chain is passed around a pair of sprocket wheels 17 one shaft 18 of one of the sprocket wheels having a hand wheel or its equivalent 18 whereby the said shaft 18 may be rotated and the chain or chains carry the bracket 13 backwards or forwards according to requirements. By this means whilst the shaft 6 is rotating the paddler can be moved in or out of the bath 19. The shaft 6 is slidable through the worm wheel 11 and has a squared or other suitable sliding fit in the worm wheel for this purpose.
upper ends to the trzune The Worm shaft 20 has n hand Wheel or its equivalent and this is preferably adjacent the hand Wheel 18 whereby one pe 'utor can adjust simultaneously it need be the tilting of the arm 2 and the :ulvnneingor retraetion o l" the poddler.
