CHECK PROTECTOR.

My invention relates broadly to check protectors and more particularly to a check protector adapted to be carried in the pocket of anindividual, or attached to a check book holder where it may be conveniently accessible for use as the checks are filled in.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above type which will be compact, simple and inexpensive to manufacture. The arrangement of the parts of the device provides a simple construction which is exceedingly efficient in its operation, 'in that an accurate impression on the check may be made. l

In order to apprise those skilled in the art how to construct and practice my invention, I shall now describe an embodiment thereof in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof.

The pocket check protector' which is disclosed in the drawings, and in which I have chosen to illust-rate a preferred embodiment of my invention, comprises a casing 2 which may consist of a sheet metal stamping provided with its longitudinal edges turned up to formV sides 3 and 4, and with one end closed by the wall 5. To the end wall 5, a

cover 6 is pivoted, which cover is adapted to close upon the top face of casing 2. Casing 2 is preferably elongated so that it will be flat and thin to permit it to be readily slipped into the pocket of the user, or tted to the usual check book employed to carry blank checks.

Upon the back wall or base 7 of casing 2, a `plurality of typeI bars 9 are adapted to be disposed and to have relative movement so that when a selection of characters is to be made, the operator may make the same by pulling the respective type bars forwardly by means of upturned ends 10 on the type bars 9. When these selected characters register with the sight opening 11 provided in a superimposed plate 12 within casing 2, an inking pad 13 is advanced forwardly over these and rides over the same when the inking pad is moved into and out of the.casing 2. Any

vsuitable means may be provided to advance the inking pad 13 forwardly or towards the open end 17 of the casing 2. I have illustrated in the drawing, a U-shaped bar 18, which normally extends a short dist-ance without the open end 17 of casing 2 so that it may be readily gripped by the operator. This U-shaped bar 18 extends rearwardly in the casing and is arranged to suitably carry the inking pad 13 and the roller 15 in journaled relation. I wish it to be understood that any form of inking pad or construction for supplying ink to the characters on the type bars 9 may be employed and consequently I do not desire to be limited to the disclosure herein.

Plate 12 serves to protect the inking pad and at the same time it serves as a cover for casing 2 when the outside cover 6 is in open position. Moreover, it provides a finished appearance for the pocket check protector and furnishes a sight opening, by means of which the operator can ascertain when the type bars have been properly set for a desired selection of characters.

Any suitable means may be provided to retain the type bars in their selected position but in the drawings I prefer to illustrate upstanding beads 2O formed in the back wall or base 7 of casing 2. These beads 2O are adapted to register in corresponding depressions 21 fitted in the underside of the various type bars 9. I have found it preferable to provide a depression 21 under each of the different characters on the type bars 9, so that the operator can ascertain whether the type bars will temporarily hold themselves in selected position.

The blank check is inserted in the device crosswise at the open end 17. The cover 6 is then moved to closed position against the casing 2 which causes a pad 22 to enter the sight opening 11 and to force the check into engagement with the type bars 9.
