Application filed January This invention relates to new and useful improvements in lightning arrester systems particularly adapted for use upon chimneys, stacks and the like.
One of the important objects of themesentinvention isto provide a lightning artester system wherein a single wire is employed to provide the ground wire, and the conductor portion which encircles the upper port-ion of a chimney and is connected to the lower ends of st-plurality ofligl'itning rods, thus'obviating the necessityof providing a permanent connection between the conductor portion of the wire and the ground wire, or further employing a splice such as is now generally used for this particular purpose.
A further object of the invention is to providea lightning arrester system of the above mentioned character, wherein detachable connection 1sprovided forthe free end' of theconductor portion of the wireandthe portion thereof which extends along the outer wall of the chimney.
A further object is to provide a lightning arrester system-of the above mentioned'character, which isof suchconstructionas to permit the same to be readily and easily installed inposition ona chimney, either after the construction thereof or during the convention willbecome apparent during the course-of the following descriptionz In the accompanying drawings forming a part ofthis specification,and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:

With reference to'Figure 1' of the-drawings, the lightning arrester'rods are illustrated at 1. Any number of these rods may be'provided as is desired and in the present instance, the chimney has associated therewith tour of such rods. Thenumber of rods to be'used depends upon the size of the be disposed vertically above thetop of the chimney.
A single wire or cable 2 extends along thewall of the chimney and the: upper portion thereof-encircles the upper portion- 0f the chimney as clearly illustratedin-Figure-1' to provide the conductor portion: 3. The: free end 4 of the conductor portion 3 is connected to the adjacent portion otthe verti cally tnztending wire 2 through the med ium of the detachable connection illustrated generally by the numeral -5. The detachable connection comprises-the upper and lower complementary sections 6 and 7. Thes'e'sections are provided with the laterally extending ears 8 and 9 respectively, with which are associated the fastening screws 10. The inner end of the uppersect-ion 6 is provided with an opening 11 receiving the upwardly disposed tonguelQ formed on the inner ends of the lower section 7 whereby the inner ends of the sections are interlocked in a=dctach able manner. The inner opposed faces of the complementary sections are provided with the transversely extendingcooperating grooves whereby means is provided in the central portion of the connection for receiving' and securing the freeend l of theconductor portion 3 ofthe single-wire or cable. A diagonally'arranged opening is formed in. the outer portion of the connection 5 byproviding apair ofcon'iplementary grooves .in the inneropposed faces of the outer'portions of the sections 6 and T and extending through this diagonal opening is the adjacent portion of the conductor portion 3 as is more clearly illustrated in Figure 3.
The upper section 6 of the detachable con nection 5 is provided with the upwardly extending internally threaded socket member 13 for detachably supporting the lower threaded end of one of the lightning arrester rods. The lower ends of the other lightning ZU'I'GSLQY rods are electrically connected to the conductor portion 3 which encircles the upper portion of the chimney 1 through the medium oi the detachable connection illustrated generally at l-it with relcreucc more particularly to Figure ei.
The above mentioned (ilctachable connection 14 includes the complementsry upper and lower sections 15 and 16 respectively, the intermediate portions thcrcot being pro vided with cooperating channels or grooves which extend transversely whereby a circular opening is formed tor receiving the conductor portion 3. The sections are secured at one end by means of the threaded bolt 1?, the opposite ends oi these sections being detachably connected through the me dium ot the tongue and slot 18 and 19 respectively. The upper section 15 of each of the connections 1st is provided with the upwardly extending internally threaded socketmember 20 similar to the socket member 13 for receiving the lower threaded ends of the other lightning arrester rods.
The grounding means includes a bucket 21 which is embedded in the ground, the same being filled with charcoal or the like as illustrated at 22 for the purposes well.

The system as shown in Figure 1 a dapted to be used in conjunction with chimneys or stacks of approximately one hundred feet in height or less than such height. Where the chimney or stack is of a greater height. an additional conductor wire and ground wire is required. and to this end I provide a wire or cable 97, the same being adapted to extend vertically along the outer wall of the chimney at a point diametrically opposite the wire 2. The upper end of the cable or wire 27 is adapted to be electrically connected to the conductor portion 3 which encircles the upper portion of the chimney through the medium of the detachable connection 28 the latter being identical with the detachable connection 5 and cooperating conduct or hereto'tore with the wire or cable 27 and the portion 3 in the same manner as described.
Encircling theintermediate portion oi the chimney is the lower conductor cable or wire 539. The tree ends thereof are disposed in suitable openings provided therefor in the detachable connection designated generally by the numeral 30, one of the sections o said connection being illustrated at with reterence more particularly to Figure ti. The connection 30 is also provided with a veriii-ally disposed opening tor receiving the iniern'iediate portion oi? the wire :3 whereby an electrical connection between the lower conductor cable and the wire 2 is provided. The intermediate portion oi the cable or wire 27 is electrically connected to the lower chimney encircling conductor cable 2.) by the dclzrchal'ile connect on designated generally by the numeral 32, one of the sections therc r-t being indicated at 33 with reference more particularly to Figure 5. l
The lower end of the vertica ly extending cable or wire 27 is adapted to be connected to a ground wire 3d which is similar to the ground wire 23, a detachable connection 3:) the construction of which is identical with the structure of the connection 26 heretofore described, providing a means for connecting the respective ends of the wires 27 and 34 together.

It will thus be seen from the l'oregoiiug description, that a lightning arrester system for chimneys, towers, .n'ionun'lents and smoke stacks has been provided which may be readily installed in position thereon. either during the building of the structure or after the same has been complete h the system being at all times positive and cilicient in carrying out the purposes for which the same is designated.

lVhile I have shown the preferred cn1- bodiment of my invention, it is to be under stood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described what I claim is:
1. In a connection for use in conjunction the invent i on,
with a lightning arrester system for chimneys which includes a plurality of lightning rods, a ground wire extending along the outer all of the chimney, the upper portion thereof encircling the upper portion of the chimney to provide a conductor wire, said connection comprising a pair of upper and lower coi'i'iplementary sections, the upper section being provided with. a socket for receiving and supporting the lower end of a lightning rod, the inner opposed faces of said sections having coopcrating transversely extending grooves formed therein for receiving the free end of the conductor wire, the inner opposed faces of the complementary sections being further provided with diagonally arranged grooves for receiving the adjacent portion of the ground Wire, and means for detachably securing the complementary sections to-' gether.
2. In a connection for use in conjunction with a lightning arrest-er system for chimneys which includes a plurality of lightning rods, a ground. wire extending along the outer wall of the chimney, the upper portion thereof encircling the upper portion of the chimney to provide a conductor wire, said connection comprising a pair of upper and lower complementary sections, the up per section being provided with a socket for receiving and supporting the lower end of a lightning rod. the inner opposed faces of said sections having cooperating transversely extending grooves formed therein for receiving the free end of the conductor Wire, the inner opposed faces of the complementary sections being further provided with diagonally arranged grooves for receiving the adjacent portion of the ground wire, means for detachably securing the complementary sections together, said last mentioned means comprising an interlocking and interfitting means arranged at one end of the sections, and securing bolts associated with the other end of said sections.
