TICKET AND SECURING MEANS THEREFOR.

This invention relates generally to marking tickets adapted to be attached to fabrics and articles of merchandise of various characters such as cloaks, dresses, hats and piece goods to carry various information with reference thereto.

It is frequently the practice of individuals to order merchandise or garments sent home on approval and after wearing or otherwise using the garment for a purpose other than that for which it was sent, to return the same to the store for credit or exchange. Merchants are also presented with the situation arising from the fact that purchasers frequently shift marking tickets having prices thereon from one garment to another so as to have a lower priced ticket on the garment which they desire to purchase.

In Patent No. 1,859,951, granted me on November 28rd, 1920, I show an arrangement whereby a marking tag is so constructed and arranged that a part integral therewith forms a pocket within which the terminal ends of tag securing means may be anchored. In Patent No. 1,308,771, granted me on July 8th, 1919, I disclose a similar arrangement in which the pocket wherein such terminal ends are to be anchored is separate from and forms an attachment to a conventionaltype of tag, the tag and the pocket however being so constructed and arranged that the pocket extends beyond the outlines of the tag.

One of the objects of my present invention is the provision of an arrangement of a tag and a pocket forming member to be associated therewith whereby the pocket formed thereby is within the outlines of the tag.

Another object of my invention is the provision of an arrangement whereby a cutaway portion of the marking ticket serves to define the pocketwithin which the terminal ends of the locking member is to be received and more particularly an arrangement whereby a member which is adapted to be associated with the marking ticket, serves to com Jlete the pocket closure.

The general object .of my invention is the provision of a new, original, inexpensive, simplifiedv and eflicient arrangement for securing; a marking ticket to an article of merchandise. V

Upon viewing Fig. 2' of the drawing, it will be observed that the marking tag and attaching means of Fig. 1 are made up of the marking tag proper 10, the pocket forming member 11 and. the attaching or toggle member 12. y I

The marking tag 10 is made of any preferred or desired material, such ascardboard and has printed thereon any desired information and may be of a conventionalv type,

except that a portion thereof is removed to form a space within the outlines of the tag and in the illustrated embodiment, this portion is shown in the form of a slot 13 opening to the upper edge 14 of thetag l0 and delimited by the inclined walls 15 and 16. The space? formed between these walls 15 and 16 serves either in oart or in whole, to form the space for the pocket within which the terminals of the toggle'12 areto be received, as will be morefully explained.

The pocket forming member 11, is also made of any preferred or desired material,

although not necessarily of as heavy a weight material as is the marking ticket 10, and ispreferably of a width greater than the width of the slot 13 at its widest point and-the length of" the member 11 is such' that when doubled over midway of the end edges and applied-to the top of the ticket 10 as shown in Fig. 1, all theedges thereof will extend beyond the walls 15 and 16 so as to completely enclose the space 13 therebetween. The pocket forming member 11 is shown in Fig; 2 as having formed therein, the opening 20, reinforced against tearing by the eyelet 21 and this opening is; preferably althougnnet necessarily formed midway of both-top and sideedges ofthe pocket forming member 11. This member 111s asseinbled with the ticket by bending it intermediate its ends for which purpose the fold line 22 may be indicated or weakened in any desired or preferred manner, and then it is caused to straddle the upper edge 1% of the markingticket 10 and when secured in this position, as by gum, will form a complete closure about the space 13 formed in the marking tag 10 between the walls 15 and 16 so as to form a pocket and due to the arrangement and manner of association of the parts, the opening 20 through the ticket will be in registry with and form an opening into the said space 13.

The lock toggle which I employ is preferably that disclosed in my above mentioned patents and is oi a type in which the string has at its ends the anchoring tips 26, each anchoring tip being preferably formed of metal and being of a diameter or thickness disproportionately less than the length, the ends of the flexible tie or string 25 being attached to the tips 26 so that the fastening point is intermediate the ends of the tips, one end 26 of the tips being preterably formed so as to serve as a guiding portion and the other end 26" being formed so as to form a handle or manipulating portion. The diameter of the openings 20 where the openings are round are such that the tips can be passed through endwise, but cannot be passed through lengthwise.

It will be understood that it is not essential in my invention that the openings 20 be provided in the member 11 as this opening can be formed by causing one of the ends 26' to serve as a piercing portion for which purpose such end can be pointed.

In the use of my invention, the pocket forming member 11 is permanently assembled with the ticket 1O eitlier prior to the use thereof or at the moment when it is desired to use it and where it is desired that the marking tag 10 and the pocket forming member be assembled prior to its use, the shackle 25 may be also assembled therewith by fastening one of the end members or tips 26 through the opening 20, all as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. When it is desired to fix the assembled marking tag and holding means of Fig. 1 to a ment. all that is necessary to do, is to pass the other tip 26 through a button hole or beneath any portion or part of the garment and then to pass the said tip through the opening '20 in which case marking tag 10 is fixed to the article of merchandise against removal without detection.

\Vith some characters of merchandise such as sweaters, it may be desirable to passone of the tips 26 not through an opening already formed in the merchandise as a button hole, but directly through the body of the material, and for assisting in. thisoperation, the other tip or end 26 may also have its guiding portion pointed as already described in connection with the first described tip 26.

For still further minimizing the possibility of separating the pocket forming member 11. from its associated position of Fig. 1 without detection and of arranging so that any attempt to remove the pocket forming member 11 either in whole or in part from its fixed position of Fig. 1, I may cause the outer edge along which the pocket iorming member 11 is secured to the marking ticket 10, to be crimped as shown at 30 in Fig. 1 so that any attempt to separate the two will cause this edge to be mutilated or torn. It will be understood of course that the crimping may also be of a character that it in itself will serve to secure the members 10 and 11 against separation.

For the purpose of increasing the size of the pocket formed between the members 10 and 11, so as to permit of readily re ceiving therein tips, I may crimp the tag 11 as shown at 31 in Fig. 2 of the drawing so that when the member 11 is folded along the fold line 22 as described, it will also told along the lines of the crimping defining the section 31 which section then will virtually become a substantially fiat top for the part as shown at 32 in Fig. 1. In Fig. 1 of the drawing, I show a modified form of the invention wherein instead of crimping the parts as shown at 30, in Fig. 1, the pocket forming member 11 may be perforated as shown at 35 in Fig. 41, along a line spaced a slight distance from the edges of the member 11 for the same purposes tor which the corresponding member is crimped in Fig. 1.

In Fig. 6 of the drawing, I show a still further embodiment where the edges of the member 11 are serrated as shown at 36.

Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the character described, a marking ticket having a portion thereof removed along one edge to form a space therewithin and sheet material means engaging both sides of the ticket for completely enclosing said space for forming a pocket within the outlines of the marking ticket.

2. In a device of the character described, a marking ticket having a portion thereof removed along one edge to form a space therewithin and sheet material means engaging both sides of the ticket for complete- 1y enclosing said space for forming a pocket within the outlines of the marking ticket, said means having an opening leading into said pocket.

3. A device of the character described comprising a marking ticket having a portion thereof removed to provide a space Within the outlines thereof and sheet material means adapted to be secured to said marking ticket to completely enclose said space to form a pocket Within the outlines of the marking ticket, said means including a weakened edge of such character as to cause mutilation thereof should an attempt be made to move it. v

A device of the character described comprising, in combination, a marking ticket having a portion thereof removed along one edge to provide a space Within the outlines of the marking ticket and a sheet material member adapted to be seenclose said space, said member having a perforation intermediate the ends whereby when said member is secured in doubled up position over the edge of the marking ticket, it will completely enclose said space to form a pocket and the perforation therein will open into said pocket, and having its intermediate portion so treated as to cause it to form a flattened upper Wall for the pocket,
