Description
MACHINE FOR AUTOMATICALLY CUTTING MOVING WEBS CE W. E. MOLINS 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 PAPER OR OTHER MATERIALS INTO SHEETS wmwbi Patented June 7, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER EVERETT MOLINS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
MACHINE FOR AUTOMATICALLY CUTTING MOVING WEBS OF PAPER 03 OTHE B MA- TERIALS INTO SHEETS.
Application filed October 27, 1925, Serial No. 65,211, and in Great Britain Decemberl, 1924.
This invention is for an improvement in or relating to a device for cutting strips from a travelling web of paper or like material and more particularly to a cutting device of the type which comprises a fixed blade and a movable blade, and has for its object the provision of a resilient deflector associated with the fixed blade which will ensure that as the strips are cut from the Web, the leading edge thereof is deflected away from the fixed blade of the cutters and cannot foul the same in its path through the device.
When a web, for example, of paper is cut,
it tends to adhere. to the knives. The cut sheet separates easily from the moving blade, but it frequently happens that the freshly cut edge of the web meets the fixed blade, and the latter acting as a stop causes the web to loop in front of the blade, or the cut end of the web may free itself and shoot up past the blade, causing interruptions in the running of the machine.
The invention is particularly but not exclusively adapted for use with the cutting mechanism described in the specification of my British Patent No. 190,202 wherein a fixed knife ismounted at a slight angle to the web and is bowed to co-operate with a rotating knife.
The present invention consists of a device for cutting strips from a travelling web of paper or like material, Which comprises a fixed'blade, a movable blade adapted to cooperate therewith to effect a shearing action upon the web of material fed through the space between the separated blades, and a resilient deflector inclined to-the plane of the fixed blade in such a manner that the leading edge thereof is located in close proximity to the edge of the fixed blade and in the path of the moving blade for the purpose set forth.
The invention is more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevation of a cutting device constructed according to the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device illustrated in Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow A. 0
Referring to the drawings, the cuttmg mechanism is mounted in a housing 1 supported by a cross bar 2 carried upon pillars bers 10 and 11 is a fixed blade 12 secured to mounted in any desired manner upon the machme upon which the device is used.
A travelling web 3 is fed to the cutting mechanism, from a reel, notshown, between a roller 4 and a rubber covered roller 5. The roller 5 is carried upon a frame 6, which is adapted to swing in a horizontal plane about a pivot pin 7 so as to enable the roller 5 to be moved. out of. engagement with the roller 4 to permit the web 3 to be adjusted correctly in the device.
After the web has been correctly aligned, the roller 5 is moved into position and is adapted to clamp the web 3 against the roller 4. The roller 4 is preferably carried in bearings 8 adapted to yield under the 1pressure of the roller 5. This is obtained y mounting the bearings 8 in guides 9 and arranging a compression spring 10 to hold the roller 4 in engagement with the roller 5.
The roller 5 is driven through a pinion drive from the main drive of the machine in such a manner that the Web is fed to the cutting mechanism at the desired speed. Mounted below the rollers 4 and 5 are a pair of guide members 10 and 11, which are adapted to ensure that the web is fed in a vertical plane.
Situated directly below the guide memthe housing 1 so as to be movable towards and away from the web fed in vertical plane which extends between the guide members 10 and 11.
Adapted to co-operate with the fixed blade 12 is a movable blade 13, which is carried on a rotatable spindle 14 in such a manner that the cutting edge engages with the cutting edge of the fixed blade 12.
Mounted upon the guide member 10 is a' resilient deflector 15 which is mounted so as to extend towards the edge of the fixed blade 12 in such a manner that its leading edge is located in close proximity thereto and in the pathof the cutting edge ofthe movable blade 13.
The guide member 10 is shaped in such a manner that the leading edge of the deflector cannot move into the path of the movable blade13 above a predetermined distance, because it has been found that if the movement of the deflector is not restricted, the lead ing edge of the web is liable to curl round the same. In the same manner a stop member 15 is provided to limit the movement 110 lip 19 and pass un er the fresh provided in advance of its cutting edge with a guard 17 which, as the moving blade ap-v proaches the fixed blade 12, 'initla-lly moves the web and the deflector 15 towards the fixed'blade, whereupon the moving blade engages with the web and moves it together with the resilient deflector 15 towards the fixed blade 12 so as to move the leading' edge of the resilient deflector 15 out of line with the leading edge of'the fixed blade 12 and enable a strip to be -cut from the web by means of the movable blade. The leading edge of the deflector is located so closely to the fixed blade'that when it is moved by the fixed blade it-almost makes a scraping contact with the surface of the fixed blade. As the moving blade passes over the fixed blade 12 the tongues 16 of the edge of the resilient deflector 15 move towards the axis of the moving blade .13 and deflect the freshly cut edge of the web away from the edge of the blade 12 and into engagement witha guide member 18, which is constructed of a radius of curvature slightly less than'the radius of the path of the cutting edge ofthe movable blade 13.
The tendency of the web is to cling to the guide member 18 and to obviate this there is mounted directly behind the cutting edge of the movable blade 13' a Ii 19 composed of a flexible material, such or example as oil cloth, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more particularly. described.
Mounted directly in advance of the fixed blade 12 is a stripping plate 20 which is provided with an arrow head located in close proximity to the path of the movableblade 13, the point of the arrow being fixed approximately in the path of the mid point of the cutting ed e of the blade 13. Due to the tendency o the Web of material to cling to the cylindrical guide member 18 the stripping plate 20 is ada ted to engage with the y out edge of the web and deflect it in a vertical path away from the guide member 18 of the cutting blade 13.
The strip which is cut from the cutting web is adapted to extend downwardly through the bed of a conveyor and to be held in a substantially vertical position in the path of one of the said conveyors so as to enable a batch of cigarettes carried by the said conveyor to be wrapped and tucked therein.
Thus it will be seen that according to the present invention means are provided whereby strips may be cut from a travelling web of paper or like material so as to ensure that the leading edge of the web does not foul one of the blades of the cutting mechanism and thereby interfere with the operation of the machine.
What I claim as m invention and desire to secure by Letters %atent is 1. A device for cutting strips from a travelling web of paper or like material which comprises a fixed blade, a movable blade adapted to'co-operate therewith to effeet a shearing action upon the web fed through the space between the separated blades, and a resilient deflector inclined to the plane of the fixed blade in such a manner that the leading edge thereof is located in close proximity to the edge of the fixed through the space between the separated blades, and a resilient deflector inclined to the plane of the fixed blade in such a manner that the leading edge-thereof is located in close proximity to the edge of the fixed blade and in the path of the moving blade,
the leading edge of said resilient deflector being cut transversely to provide a series. of tongues at the forward edge for the purpose set forth.
3. A device for cutting strips from a travelling web of paper or like 'material which comprises a fixed blade, a movable blade adapted to cooperate therewith to effect a shearing action upon the. web fed through the space between the separated blades, and a resilient deflector inclined to the plane of the fixed blade in such a manner that the leading edge thereof is located in close proximity to the edge of the fixed blade and in the path of the moving blade, and means for limiting the movement of the leading edge of the said deflector.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
W. E. MOLINS.
