Description

Patented June 7, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STANISLAW KIELAR, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
TOY
Application filed April 9,
form of top in which an elongated spindlecarries a spacing sleeve and interchangeable ornamental members so that the members are held out of contact with the top body, thus permitting free rotation of the'top, and in which provision is made for temporarily retaining the members on the spindle.
Further objects are to provide a novel form of top in which a simple and elfective manner of weighting the top is provided so that the top may be stamped from sheet metal with a minimum of expense and may thereafter b readily assembled to enclose the weighting means.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is an elevation of the top partly in section.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a bottom View of the top with parts broken away.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the top is composed of a body portion formed of an upper and lower member indi cated at 1 and 2 which are stamped from sheet metal. These members are provided with a circular peripheral port-ion between which a lead ring 3 is enclosed. This ring is preferably formed in a circular manner as indicated in Figure 3, and thereafter, placed in the stamped members 1 and 2. The stamped members then have their outer edges crimped or beaded as indicated at 4 to lock the members together. A sleeve or hub 5 carried by the members, and is rigidly carried by the central spindle 6. This spindle is provided with a disc 7 spaced upwardly from its lower edge, and such disc is notched as indicated at 8. It is to be noted that a cord with a knot may be hooked in the notch 8 and thereafter may be readily wound between the bottom member 2 and the disc 7 for spinning the top.
The spindle 6 extends upwardly and carries a sleeve 9 which does not reach to the top of the spindle. This-sleeve supports at its upper end, a plurality of ornamental TOP.
1926. Serial No. 100,879.
members 10 which are so formed that they provide closed figures of dilferent designs.
They may be painted dilferent colors if desired. These members are loosely mounted on the spindle at their upper overlapped ends, such overlapped ends being held together by means of clamping tongues 11 struck from the members and pressed through apertures therein as indicated in Figure 1. They are prevented from sliding oil the spindle by means of an upper collar 12 which has a binding lit with the spindle 6 so that the operator may assemble the desired members 10 upon the spindle and may thereafter press the collar 12 in place upon the spindle. It is to be noted that the spaoing sleeve 9 is loose upon the spindle and supports the upper portion of the members 10. The lower portion of the spindle passes loosely through apertures in the members 10 and rests upon the top body.
It is to be noted further that the members 10 may be readily held while the cord is quickly withdrawn from the top, thus setting the top in rapid motion. Thereafter, the members 10 are released and they rotate at different speeds and form different ornamental figures above the top.
It is to be understbod that each top is equipped with a plurality of these members so that any desired ornamental figure may be produced thereby. Further than this, the members, as stated, may be dilferently colored and consequently, will produce a great variety of effects.
It willbe seen that a novel form of top has been provided which has a weighted peripheral portion and which carries at its upper part a plurality of interchangeable members of ornamental design.
It will be seen further that the top may be readily produced by ordinary machine shop process with a minimum of expense.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and asthe scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
I claim:
1. A top comprising a body portion and a weighted peripheral edge having a vertical spindle, a spacing sleeve carried by said spindle, a plurality of members of different designs and apertured to loosely receive the sleeve at their lower portions and supported by'the upper end of the sleeve, and apertured at their upper portions to loosely receive the spindle, and a retaining collar carried by the upper end of the spindle.
2. A. top comprising a body portion formed of two stamped sheet metal members, each 01": said members having a peripheral groove, a heavy ring carried Within said grooves, said metal members having out- Wardly projecting flanges beaded together, 10
a hub rigidly carried by said members, and a spindle rigidly carried by said hub.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in
the county of MilWaukee'a-nd State of VVis- 15 oonsin.
