STORAGE-BATTERY TERMINAL.
Application filed April 15, 1925. Serial'No. 23,83.
vThis invention relates to the terminals of storage batteries, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of constructon as hereinafter' shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 isa vertical section of the, improved device applied to a conventional battery post.
Figure 2 is a perspective view from beneath, of the compressible coupling member.
Figure 3 is a perspective view, from beneath, of the conduetor carrying sleeve.
The improvedv device comprises an internally and externall tapered inverted substantially cup-shaped7 member 10 consti.- tuting a male member closed at the smaller end as at 11, and preferably externally reduced at the smaller., end as shown at 12.
A threaded pin 13 extends from the smaller end of the tapered member, and the side Walls of the latter are provided With a plurality of longitudinally directed clefts 14 cut entirely through the Walls and 'opening through the larger end and terminating at the closed end, as shown.
One of the tapered battery posts is represented conventionally at 15, and lthe internal ta er of the member 10 corresponds to and is a apted t0 closely engage the post, as illustrated in Figure 1.
Bearing over the tapered tubular member 10 is an internally tapered inverted substantially cup-shaped coupling member 16 constituting a female member having a laterally extending socket 17 in which the con ductor element, a portion of which is repre-v sented at 18, is soldered or otherwise se'-v cured in the usual manner.
The member 16 is of greater length than the member 10, and is adapted to be firmly lamped thereon by a. fianged nut 19 which engages the threaded pin 13, as shown.
The space between the closed end 11 of the tubular member and the lianged nut 19, and the space produced by the reduced portion 12 of the tubular member is designed to contain a lubricant, preferably hard grease,r to lubricate the parts and prevent sulphuration, the parts being of brass or the like. Y
While I have shown the improved device applied to one terminal post only,` it Will be understood that one of the improved devices will be applied to both the positive and negative posts of each battery.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, and
of any suitable material.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the dra-Wings. and set forth in the specication, but it will be understood that modiliactions Within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction Withouty departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. i
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
A. terminal of the character described, comprising a pair of interfitting male and female members, eac of substantially cup shape internally and e ternally tapered, the
male lmember being longitudinallysplit at intervals and of greater length than the female member, an external lateralnipple on the female member for the attachment thereto of a conductor, a central threaded lug on the top of the male member, the female mem! ber being provided with a central opening in its top -to 'receive the lug, and a nut engaged on the` lug to work against the top of the female member, the slits in the male member being extended through the free edge and terminating at the top thereof.
