The general object of the .present inven? tion is to provide a boiler of" theyertical l. watertube type with. improved steam super-v lieating provisions.
More specirically, the object of the inven-v ltion provide.` an efectivecombinatioll of a superheater with a wasteiheat boiler of i the well known ickestype, whereby a desirably rhigh superheating effect may be 0btained, with aV superheater `which is siinple in construction and arrangement, and is so` disposed as to facilitate inspection andrepairs, and wliich'does not weaken, or tend to produce air leakage through, the boiler shell, or require any change in its cylindrical section.'

The combina-tion WithI a boiler coinprising avertical shell and 'vertical Water tubes and a centrally disposed battle' providing up and 'down heating gas passes, 'of a verticalr roW- of horizont-al superheater elements parallel to and alongsidesaid baille and having their ends extendingthrough said shell and vertical-inlet and outlet headers exter-k nal to said shell and 'to Which the opposite endsof Isaid element-s are connected.
2. The combination of claim l, and vin conjunction therewith a superimposedset of vertically'disposed 'plate-like bodies formed with apertures receiving intermediate portions of said superheater element-s which are thereby supported.
3. The combination of claim'f'll, land in conjunction thereivith 'a-superimposed set of vertically disposed plate-like bodiesk formed with apertures receiving Vintermediate portions of said superheater elements which are thereby Supported, said bodies having their ends received between adjacent pairs ol water tubes and being provided with transverse Water tube engaging portions whereby said bodies are held against displacement.
4. The 'combination with a boiler having vertical Water tubes and a vertical enclosing shell comprising an outer metallic casing and an inner refractory lining, ot' a superheater consisting of horizontal tubes extending across the boiler between groups ol water tubes 'and having entl portions passing through the shell at opposite sides ot' the boiler'and'ribbed casings surrounding the portion o't' the tubes Within the shell, the latter being formed With openings at one side large enough to permit the passage ol the encased portions ot the super-heater elements, and sectional metallic plates uniting With the casing to seal said opening and formed vwith apertures through which the corresponding ends of the elements extend and in which they lit tightly.
5. The combination with a vertical water tube boiler having a cylindrical shell com-y prising an outer metal casing which is lormed with av vertical slot at one side and at the other side with a vertical series ot' holes, ot' a superheater including a vertical row of horizontal tubes extending across said shell and having their ends at one side of the boiler passingithrough and snugly fitting in said holes, and plates bridging said slot and 'formed with holes snugly receiving the corresponding ends ol said tubes. said tubes being surrounded Within the casing by ribbed tube casings, and said' slot being wide enough to permit the passage ot the encaseril portions 'oit' the tube when said plates are removed.
6. The combinationvvith a vertical water tube boiler having a cylindrical shell comprising' an outer casing which is formed with a vert-ical slot at one side and at the other side with a. vertical Series ol holes, of angle bars reinforcing said casing at the Vedges yof said'slot, a super-heater comprisii'ig a vertical rowot' horizontal tubes extending across said shell and having their ends at one side ot' the boil-er passing through and snugly fitting in said holes, plates bridging said slotand removably .secured to said bars and formed with holes snugly receiving the corresponding ends of said tubes, said tubes rbeingA surrounded within the casing by ribbed tube casmgs and said slot being Wide enough rto permit the passage of the encased portions #ofthetube when said plates are removed.
