STEAM SUPERHEATER FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Application filed April 14, 1924. Serial No. 70 ,394.
My invention relates to locomotiveboilers and has for its object to provide animproved steam superheater construction for such boilers especially designed to provide an exceedingly simple construction of superheater headers which can be cast preferably in two pieces and with little or no loss in the foundry. The entire advantage which I have in view'is a material shortening of the end extensions of the superheater tubes and my construction also makes it practicableto use but two sizes or at most but three sizes of superheater tubes. Still another advantage of my construction Is.
" tofore used, and still another advantage of my construction lies in the provision of, an exceedingly simple clamp for holding the ends ofthe super-heater tubes in contact with the headers.
The nature of my improvements will be best understood asdescribed in connection with the drawings in which theyare illustrated and'in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the front end of a locomotive embodying my improvements, the section being taken as on the line 1-1 of Fig. 3.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional elevation on the line 22 of Fig. 1.

A indicates the shell of the boiler and A the tube sheet secured tothe front end of the shell. B, B,,etc. are the usual small diameter fire tubes extending through the boiler front tube sheet to the back tube sheet and, in accordance with my invention, disposedin concentric arcs, the flues B being staggered in arrangement with reference to shown, and connecting through the joint.

The two headers E and E are of are shaped form and preferably nearly circular, as shown, being. supported on brackets G, G, secured to the lower part of the front end, of the boiler shell. The front and rear headers are preferably cast separate from each other and secured together by bolts, as indicated at E From the lower portions of the front header at points below the center line of the boiler I provide steam pipes indicated at E E which may and should extend" out horizontally from the header as it is shown in Fig. 1, to a point in front of the screen P; connected with the front end of these pipes E are the curved pipes e which lead to the cylinders not shown.
Joints are made between the header section and the ends C of the superheater tubes, as best shown in Figs. 6 and 7 The spherical heads C abut against seats at the outer ends of the parts indicated at e and e in the front and rear headers. and are abutted against seats H, H, which are Supported on a forked clamping plate I, having forked ends, as indicated at I and secured in place by a bolt J, extending between the abutting faces of the headers, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6.
K is the shell of the smoke box of the locomotive, and L, L L L are sectional plates secured to the front header, as shown. The plates L and L L are readily removable to permit of the withdrawal and insertion of superheater ends. M indicates a damper, the pivot units of which are hinged end extensions C of only three sizes,

K is the usual exhaust pot, K the stack and K the usual mixing nozzle- Q is a plate secured on the brackets G and extending back to the tubesheet A a certain number of the small tubes B lying below it, while the space lying above the plate Q and within the headers E, E", forms a fine which is controlled by the damper M. R and R are the usual screens.
It will be obvious that the illustrated construction provides in the are shaped headers E and E exceedingly simple castings and, by reason of the extension of these headers into the lower part of the boiler she'll, makes it feasible to employ short steam pipes E It will also be obvious that the are shaped suspension of the superheater tiues B B Pr", and the staggering of these fines with reference to each other makes it feasible to employ super-heater units C witii ant heater tines are employed, oi only two sizes, and it also makes it feasible tor the superheater tube ends to extend in approximately radial planes to their points of connection with the superheater headers, so that each superheater end can be independently removed without necessitating the displace ment of any other. The coupling of the superhcater tube ends to the header sections by the forked plates 1, as shown in Fig. 6, makes'it very simple to connect ordisconnectthese parts and to permit the ire-dress ing or re-grinding oi the spherical heat C ll here this is necessary, the removably sectional plates D, if, if, when removed, give a "Jess to the individual super-heating ends in a convenient and etlective manner and these plates, in connection with the plate Q and the headers, form a flue, the flow through which is controlled by the damper M, so that when the engine is not using steam, a flow of furnace gases through the superheater lines can be out 01f so as toprotect the superheater tube ends from superheating.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination with a locomotive boilor, superheater fines extending longitudinally through the boiler and arranged in concentric circular arcs, arc shaped superheater headers of greater diameter than the outer row of superheater l'lues secured in front of the boiler and superheater tubes extending into the lines and having laterally extending end extensions secured to the headers.
2. In combination with a locomotive boiler, super-heater flues extending longitudinally through the boiler and arranged in concentric circular arcs, are shaped superheater headers of greater diameter than the outer row of superheater flues secured in front of the boiler and extending down on each side thereof below the center line of the boiler, superheatertubes extending into the lines and having lateral end extensions secured to the headers and steam pipes con nected to the lower portions of the outer headers.

4.. In combination with a locomotive boiler, concentric rows of superheater fines arranged in staggered relation to each other, are shaped superheater headers each forming a separate unit, concentric with but of greater diameter than the rows of fines, se-
cured in front of the boiler and superheater tubes extending into the lines and having lateral end extensions connecting them with the headers in approximately radlal lines.
