Description

Patented May 10, 1927.
UNITED AS'lA'l'llS LEWIS J. CHERRY, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
COMBINATION TOOL.
Application :filed July 5, 1922. Serial No. 573,025.
This invention relates to new and useful `mprovements in a combination tool.
One object of the invention is to provide a. tool of the character' described specially designed for use by carpenters and embodying a protractor, and spirit and plumbA levels, all conveniently and compactly com l bined.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is of simple construction, may be cheaply and easily manufactured and readily applied to the work.
lVith the above and other objects 1n view V the invention has particular relation to certain novel fea-tures of construction, use and arrangement or' parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein as used for a protractor.
Figure 2 shows a sectional view thereof. Figure 3 shows a side view oit' the`pr0- tractor head, showing the spirit and plumb levels, and
Figure lshows a plan view of the plumb4 level.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the protractor head. At one end this h ead has a cut away portion 2, in which the spirit level 3 is mounted. rIhe respective ends of this spirit level have the bearings 4:, 4, through which the outwardly threaded rods 5 pass, and threaded onto said rods above and below said bearings are the adjusting nuts 6. 6, by means oil which the level may be adjusted. "llhe ends of the rods 5 are suitablyT anchored to the head. The other end of the head has a circular opening 7 in which the protractor disc 8 is rotatably mounted. This disc is suitably graduated so as to indicate different angles as it is turned relative to the gauge mark 9 on the head. The upper side of the head has a r long narrow groove 10, and the end of the head adjacent the disc 8 has a similar vertical groove 11. Fitted through the groove 10 there is the blade 12 which is gauged to designate linear measurements, and one side of this blade has a lengthwise groove 13. The dise 3 has a central cnt away portion Figure 1 shows a side view of .the device,
14 in which is located a thumb `nut 15 which I is threaded onto the inner end of the clamp rod 16. This rod works through a radial bearing 17 of the disc 8 and its outer end is formed with a lateralcatch 18 which is received by the groove 13. By loosening the nut 15 the blade may be adjusted to any desired position and there held by tightening up the nut 15, the adjacent side of the disc 8 being also grooved to receive said blade.
The numeral 19 designates a level base, the upper` side of which has a dovetailed rib 20, and the lower edge of the head 1 correspondingly shaped groove 21 to receive said rib,'thus forming means for the attachment of the head 1 to said base, when ythe device is to be used for a spirit level.
When the device is to be used as a protractor the base 19 is removed and the. edge 22 is placed against the edge of the board to be cut.\and the blade 12 then adjusted to the desired angle, said blade may be secured at said angle by means of the set screw 23, and the pencil line then drawn` along the gauged edge of the blade, forming a mark along which the board may be cut.
Referring again to Figures 3 and 1, a plumb level 37is shown, to one side of which there is secured, a blade adapted to fit into the end groove 11. This blade has a vertical groove 39 into which the catch 18 may be engaged to hold the plumb level secured to the head 1. The edge 22 of the head 1 is then placed in vertical position against the wall or other structure and. the plumb level will indicate whether or not said structure is plumb.
`What l claim is z- A. combination tool including a level base, a. protractor head, said head and base being provided, one with a rib and the other with a groove adapted to receive said rib', said head having a cut away portion at one end, a detachable spirit level mounted in said cut away portion, means for adjusting the respective ends of said spirit level, the other end of said head having a circular opening, a. graduated disc rotatably mounted in said opening, one side of said head having al long narrow groove and the end of said head adjacent the dise having a transverse groove,
a graduated blade seated in said first mentioned groove, said blade having a lengthwise groove in one side, said disc having a Central out away portion and a radial bearing'7 a thumb nut located in the cut-away portion of said dise, a Clamp rod Working through said radial bearing in said dise into one end of which said thun'lb nut is threaded and Whose outer end has a catch which is received by the groove of said blade. 10
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification.
