STATIONARY-WASHTUB COVER-HOLDING DEVICE.

Application filed December 18, 1926. Serial No. 155,701.

This invention relates to retaining devices and has particular reference to a holder for retaining the covers of stationary washtubs in an elevated or raised position and against accidental closing while the tub is in use.

The invention comprehends a simple, efficient and inexpensive device of this character in the nature of a flexible element anchored at one end to the wall above the washtub and provided with a hooked member carried at the free end of the flexible member for engagement with the free edge of the tub cover.

WVith the above recited and other objects in view, reference is had to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which there is exhibited certain examples of embodiments of the invention which are in no way intended as limitations upon the scope of the appended claims as it is to be clearly understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of said claims may be resorted to when found expedient.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates a washtub cover which in the usual construction is provided with a marginal depending flange 11. The retaining device includes a flexible element 12, such as a chain, which is provided at one end with an anchoring device 13, such as a screw eye, which is screwed into the wall above the Wa-shtub. The opposite end of the chain or flexible element 12 has connected therewith a hooked member 14, which is preferably in the nature of a strip of sheet metal, riveted or otherwise connected at 15 to the chain extremity 12, at one of the ends of the strip. The opposite endis provided with a substantially right-angularly bent portion 16 having a reversely bent terminal duced in the chain orflexibleelement 12 should the cover be moved upwardly from its supported position by the device.

In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the hooked member 18 is preferably wider and is cut, bent and formed to provide a right-angularly disposed end portion 19 having laterally spaced reversely projecting ears 2020 arranged parallel to and spaced from the main body of themember 18. The hooked member in this form is carried by a flexible element 21 and is especially designed to engage with and retain either one or both of the marginal flanges 22 of the covers 23 of adjacenttubs, as illustrated in Fig. 6.

What is claimed is: V

1. A device for holding a flanged washtub cover in open elevated position, comprising a flexible element anchored at one end to the wall above the washtub, and a hooked member carried by the free end of the flexible element and embracingly engageable' with the flange at the outer free edge of the washtub cover, said hooked member consistin of a relatively wide ele ment having a rig t-angularly bent end portion and a reversely bent terminal overlying, spaced from and parallel to the body of the member to embracingly engage the flange over a substantially wide area.

2. A device for holding the flanged metal covers of a pair of adjacent washtubs in ele-' vated open position, comprising a flexible element anchored at one end to the wall above the washtubs and at a point on a line between the same, and a member carried by the free end of the flexible element constructed of sheet material, cut, bent and formed to provide a' body portion having a right-angularly bent free end formed with laterall spaced rearwardly directed ears paralle to and spaced from the body portion to constitute hooks for embracingly engaging the flange on the covers.
