Description

.W. B. PARKER ADJUSTABLE LI-P 4SPRAY NOZZLE l /May 3 9 l l l FiledJune s, 1926 Byammh Patented May 3, 1927.
WILLIAM B. PARKER, OF PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
,ADJUSTABLE LIP-SPRAY NozzLE.
Application fued `:una: 3,
Th'e'present invention relates'to a's'prayl nozzle, and has for` its principal object to provide a structure which producesa broom like spray, and is adjustable from a coarse spray that will reach the top s of the trees to a finer and wider spray for close work.
Another important object of the invention lies in, the provision of a nozzle of this nature which produces a spray that has considerable driving force and which is very penetrating.
A; still further important object ofthe invention-resides in a spray nozzle of this nature having an easily and conveniently adjustable lip for regulating the spray.v
Another important object of the invention is to distrilgiute the spray in the fan or broom so that the velocity of the spray will be equal throughout the fan or broom. This can be accomplished by directing veins on the adjustable lip or by curving the surface at the tip of the adjustable lip so thatthe spray can pass more freely at the sides than at the center.
A. still further important object of the invention lies in the provision of a sprayv nozzle of this nati'lre having a fixed lip and an adjustable lip, and means'for directing the fluid onto the fixed lip initially to pre vent undue strain on the adjustable lip.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide anadjustable lip spray nozzle of this nature whichis exceedingly simple in .its construction, strong and durable, inexpensive `to manufacture, reliable and etlicient in its operation and use,not likely to easily become out of order, compactand otherwise well adapted to the pun pose for which it is designed.
lith the above and numerous other objects in View as will appear as'the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. f
ln the drawing:
`Figure 1 is a sectional view taken longitudinally through one embodiment of th`e adjustable lip spray nozzle, embodying the features of my invention, showing the same attached to a spray rod.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section take-n therethrough, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. l, looking in the direction of` the arrows.
1926. `Serial No. 113,498. 4. i
Referring to theI drawing in detail, and particularly igs. v1 and" 2, thereof, it ,will be seen that a ytubular spray rod is designated by the numeral and has an elbowcoupling 6 on the upper end thereof into whichis threaded the plug body 7 of my improved spray nozzle. Itis to be noted that the bore 8 of this plug body 7 is tapered forwardly, that is, the top wall thereof inclines downwardly and forwardly, for a purpose which will appear as the description proceeds.
A fixed lip 9 projects forwardly from the plug` and is ,formed integrally withv per- PATENT oFFlcE.
pendicularly disposed side walls 10. A U
flexible adjustable lip 11 projects forwardly andl inclines forwardly and downwardly from the plug body so as to terminate a distance from the extremity of the fixed lip 9. Extensions 12 are formed on the forward ends of the walls to rise therefrom y' and support a shaft 13 on which-is rockable a bell crank 14, the lower end of which is adapted to engage the adjustable lip 11, while the upper end thereof terminates in an eye to which is tied or otherwise fixed a cable 15.
The cable 15 is threaded through an opening 16 provided in a ange 17 on the body plug T,l and extends down alongside of the spray rod so that it may be pulled for `rocking the bell crank 14 so that the lower end thereof will force the adjustable lip 11 downwardly toward the fixed lip 9.
It will be see-n that the column of spray after passing through the opening in the plugs passes through the air to the lips of the nozzle without being confined by side walls or piping. If it is desired to reach the top of tall trees the lips are left open and the` spray continues through the air until it breaks from friction on the air, then to fifteen Vfeet from the nozzle. l
It is thoughtthat the construction, operation, utility, land advantages of this invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely byway of example, since in actual. practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of theinvention and the above description. It willr be apparent that numerous changesvin the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be opening, a bell crank lever roekably mounted between the side Walls in position to engage said adjustable lip, and a flexible member trained through the opening in the flange and engaged with the bell crank lever so that it may be pulled for swinging the bell Crank lever to'engage the adjustable lip to move the saine toward the fixed lip.
In testimony whereof I aflx my signature.
WILLIAM B. PARKER.
