. N. DOUGLASS CHAIN WRENCH Filed June 11, 1926 INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESS Patented Apr. 26, 1927.
NEALE DOUGLASS, F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
I 01mm WRENCH.
Application filed June 11, 1926. Serial No. 115,328.
This invention contemplates the provision of a wrench, primarily intended for use as a pipe wrench or the like and designed to perform its duty without marring the work or object with which it is used, and to permit a very effective grip to be obtained on such work.
In carrying out the invention I compre hend the use of a chain adapted to surround the object to be gripped, and tightened thereon by means of a toothed wheel ournaled on one end of the handle, the latter being operated with a ratchet movement for this purpose.
The nature and advantages of this invention will be better understoodwhen the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the
' invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of .parts as claimed. V In the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and 2 wherein: r
. Fig. 1 is a view of the wrench partly in section showing how it is used, and
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary edge elevation of the wrench partly in section.
The wrench forming the subject-matter of this invention comprises a handle 10 which is bifurcated at one end as at 11 to accommodate a toothed wheel 12. This wheel is journaled on a pin or bolt 13 passed through the separated portions of the handle defined by said bifurcation, while also supported by said handle by means of the same bolt are spaced parallelplates or mem bers 14 which form a continuity of the hen 4o dle as shown in Fig. 1. The wheel 12 is of sufficient diameter to project beyond the sides of the handle and also between the festly, with the chain arranged in this manner, it can be tightly drawn about the pipe or other object to be gripped by moving the handle 10 in one direction to rotate the wheel 12, the handle being provided witha spring pressed rod 17 arranged longitudinally thereof and which rod has a beveled extremity 18. The beveled extremity 18 of the rod 17lis bifurcated so as to straddle the teeth of the wheel 12 and this wheel is pro vided upon opposite sides of the teeth with circumferentially spaced notches 12 which are adapted to receive the bifurcated ends. of the said. beveled extremity and provide a ratchet action for the handle. By reason of this construction it is obvious that a pipe or other object can be positively gripped without marring or injuring the object, which is a chief objection to Stilson wrenches and the like. Then again, the object is gripped with uniform pressure about its circumference thereby eliminating the possibility of denting or bending a relatively soft pipe or tube, should the latter be gripped at spaced points, all that can be 7 obtained by wrenches in present day use. Furthermore, the wrench can be used in restricted spaces where it is impossible to use other kinds of wrenches for the same purpose. I While it is believed that from the forego ing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and de 85.
scribed, and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed. 7 p
Having thus described the invention, what 7 is claimed as new, is 7 96 A wrench of the character described comprising a handle bifurcated at one end, a toothed wheel journaled in said bifurcated end of the handle, spaced parallel members projecting from said endofthe handle, and each terminating to provide obliquely disposed portions adapted to engage the work, said members being arranged at the opposite sides of said wheel and pivoted on the axis thereof, a chain having one end secured belee tween the corresponding extremities of the a s'pringpressed rod arranged within the oblique portions of said members and adapthandle and having a tapered extremity eooped to be passed around the work to be erating with said Wheel to'aflor-d the handle 10 ripped between the latter and the teeth a ratchet movement.
