This invention relates to a combined boiler and superheater. and is directed to the pro vision of a construction which will provide for the maximum of efficiency of gas flow in both the boiler and superheater. A fur ther. object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved arrangement of superheater and boiler which may be readily applied to boilers already in use without extensive change or alteration. Other objects and advantages will be set forth in further detail in the accompanying specification and drawings which 'show'a preferred embodiment of the invention. v
The boiler comprises a lower water drum 10, an intermediate drum 11 and an upper steam drum 12; "Connecting the drums and 11 there is a bank of substantially horizontal boiler tubes 13. A second bank of verticalboiler tubes 14 connect drums llanrl 12 and athird bank of inclined tubes 15 connect the steam and water drums 12- and 10. 16 is the fire chamber containing the usual grate bars not shown; and 17 is the duct to the stack.
The superheater is preferably located in a housing 18 in front of the boiler and alongside of the bank 1 1. When applying superheaters to boilers already in use the front wall of the boiler is removed and the housing 18 substituted therefor. The superheater comprises inlet and outlet headers 19 and 20 which extend from one end of the housing to the other and into which are connected U shaped superheater elements 21. A suitable supply pipe 22 leads from the steam drum 12 to the inlet header 19. By the above construction the entire Weight of the superheater elements is carried directly upon the headers. Preferably the headers are located back of the drum 11 so as to be protected thereby from the direct access of hot comprising a boiler having an upper steam gases from thefire; r
To direct the hot gases over the boiler and superheater tubes in the most ' efiicient manner baiiies 23, 24,25 and'26are provided These baflles serve to direct the hot gases of combustion longitudinally and transversely over the tubes 13 thence transversely over the lower ends of the bank of tubes 14 into the superheater chamber and at right over the corrugated elements thereof. From the superheater the gases pass over the top of let duct 17., By'directing the gases in this manner, they the bafiles 25 and transversely across the upper parts of bank 14, and thence downwardly along the tubes 15 over bafile 26 to the outare caused to flow at high velocity over both the boiler and superheatertubes. -Further-' more, the gases passingover the superheater are tempered to a considerable extent before reaching the superheater .by reason of havdrum, a pair of lower water drums, banks Of bOIlGI tubes connecting the said drums,
and including a horizontal, a vertical and an inclined bank of tubes a .superheaber having vertically arranged tubes disposed at one ing previously passed over and imparted and 'superheater, comprising in combination, an upper steam side of the vertical bank of tubes in a superheater chamber disposed above and to the side of the lower water drum connected to the vertical bank of tubes, and baflles arranged intermediate the boiler tubes and having connected therewith a horizontally extending baflle extending through the vertical bank of boiler tubes to a point adjacent the superheater, said battles being adapted to direct'all of the hot gases of combustion first over the horizontal and thence laterally over the vertical tubes and thence transversely across the tubes of the superheater whereby all of the gases are tempered in temperature before reaching the.
said superheater.
2. A combined boiler and superheater drum, an intermediate drum, a lower water drum,. a bank of 1ncl1ned boilertubes connecting the upper and lower drums, a bank of vertical boiler tubes connectin the in termediate and upper drum and at ird bank 1 of boiler tubes connecting the intermediate and lower drums, a superheater having vertically arranged tubes dis osedadjacent the vertical bank of boiler tu inlet and outlet headers for said superheater disposed below and behind the intermediate drum, and said intermediate drum being adapted to baflies disposed betwen the banks of boiler shield the super-heater headers from the ditubes having portions thereof extending rect access of hot gases. through the vertical bank of boiler tubes, In testimony whereof Ihereto aflix my Sig 5 said baffies being adapted to direct the hot nature.
gases over various boiler tubes and transv versely over the tubes of the superheater, HAROLD O. WOOLLEY.
