IMPROVEMENT IN lRON-CLAD FENCE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,612, dated April 27, 1875; application filed March 8, 1875.

To whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. BOWYER, of Huntsburg, county of Geauga and State of Ohio, have invented a new Iron-Glad Fence, of which the following is aspecification:

This invention relates to an improvement in iron and wood fences, and consists in covering the posts and rails with sheet metal in such a manner that the metal protects the wood from the weather. The pickets are made of heavy wire, and are passed through the metal covering of the rails, so that they do not come in contact with the wood, and the holes in the meta around the pickets, as well as all nail-heads and other places where water would be likely to get in, are soldered up, thus making a strong, durable, and economical fence.

To enable others to fully understand my invention I proceed to describe the same in detail, with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is a section through the rails.

Wooden posts A are incased in a sheetmetal coat, B, and the rails O are covered on the top and sides with a sheet-metal covering, 1). The rails are secured to the posts by two pieces of metal, E E, passed through the posts, and which embrace the ends of the rails on each side and underneath the metal covering, rivets e e 0, through them, securing them firmly together. The posts are surmounted by metal caps F, which slip down over the metal covering. The metal covering of the rails embraces a strip of met l, ,0. which lies against the side of the rail. The pickets H are passed through holes made in the metal covering, and pass between the said strip g and the covering. Rivets at suitable intervals through the rails and covering secure the same together.

The tops of the pickets may be bent in any suitable design for ornamentation. Thejoints of the rails and posts are covered with a metal strip, and these and all other joints and nailor rivet heads are soldered over to exclude rain or moisture. The whole may be painted and sanded, and presents aneat and finished appearance.

Having described my invention, I claim- The posts A having the sheet metal covering B, the rails O with their covering D and strip g, the metal pieces E E, and the pickets H, the whole constructed and combined as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
