UNITED STATES- SAMUEL .BUcHsBAUn AND HERBERT Buonsnmm, or cmcaeo, more.
'VANITY BOX.
applicati@ mea' 'my so, 192s. serial no. 554,007.
Our invention relates to receptacles and more particularly to vanity boxes.
It is the purpose of our invention to provide a vanity box or receptacle for powder and a powder puff or Similar toilet preparations and articles, which is simple in construction, compact in 'arrangement and neat in appearance. l
It is particularly the purpose of the invention to provide such a receptacle that can be supported on a band or strap so that the same can be worn on the wrist.
It is more particularly a purpose of the invention to provide a device of the above lnentioned .character which has a hinged cover and which is provided with a mirror in which the hinge 'construction is simple and in.whicl1 simple means is used for se'- curing the straps to the box, and also, a simple construction is provided for holding the mirror in place in the container. The construction of the box and hinged cover and the mirror holding means are preferably such that the same can be easily and cheaply assembled. a
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description of the accompanying drawings roceeds. However, we desire to have it istinctly understood that we do not intend to limit ourselves to the exact details shown and described, but that we intend to include as part of our invention all such obvious changes and modiications of parts as would occur to a person skilled in this art and as would fall within the scope of the claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical sectional view of our improved vanity box, showing the hinged cover thereof open;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on a line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the device taen on a line 3--3 of Fig.v 1; and v Fig. 4 is a fragmentaryl enlarged sectional view taken on a line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referringin detail to the drawings, our improved vanity box comprises a main body portion having a bottom 5 and upstandmg side walls 6 and upstanding end walls 7. The end walls 7 are provided with openings 8 into which the strap attaching members 9 may be inserted. Said strap attaching members 9 are provided withelongated eyes 10 for receiving the loops 1l and 12 on the ends of the stra 13. Said, attachin members are punche out of n. piece 'of eet metal and comprise a cross bar 14 forming part of the loop and end'connect' members 15 joining said cross bar with portion 16 of said member. The main body portion is provided with a curved inner edge portion .17 and with laterally projecting portions 18 which are adapted to engage witlrthe inner faces of the end members 7v to hold the members 9 in place therein. The openings 8 are in the form of elongated slots `substantially the same length as the bar 14 so that the member 9 can be inserted from the inside through the slot and pushed outwardly until the projections or lugs 18 engage with the inner faces of the end walls 7.
Each of the side walls 6 is provided with an inwardly struck projection 19, said projections 19 eing opposite each other to form a pair of opposite inwardly extending lugs.
t e `main body Said lugs are adapted to enter recesses 2() A which are formed by .striking the metal'of the side flanges 21 of the cover member 22 inwardly, as clearly shown in Fig, 4. The
inward striking of said flanges to form, the
' recesses 20 provides inwardly struck lugs 23 opposite the recesses 20. It will be seen that when the cover member 22 is forced down oli/the main body portion 5, the springiness of the side members 21 will allow the same to be forced inwardly slightly upon engagement with the lugs 19 until the recesses 20 are opposite the lugs 19 when said lugs will enter said recesses snapping into place `and thus hinging the cover to the main body ortion of the box. Lu 23', similar to the ugsl 23, are also struc inwardly on the cover 22 in opposite pairs, thus .providing a pair of lugs comprising a lug 23 and a lug 23', on each depending side flange 21 of the cover 22. Said lugs 23 and 23', serve to hold the mirror 24 in position. Said mirror is inserted by pressing the same downwardly against the top-of the lid 22 past the lugs 23 and 23', the yieldability of the flanges 21 permitting this. The four lugs 23 and 23 will then hold the mirror 24 firmly in posi-4 tion. The side members 6 of the main body portion are alsol provided with inwardly struck lugs 25 whichl are adapted to enter the openings 26 on the lside flanges 2l of the las will be evident from Figs. 2 and 3. The cover is also provided with a downwardly extending flange 27 at the free end thereof .cover to hold the cover in closed position,
which is adapted to enter the main body portion of the box on the inside of the end member 7 op osite that at which the cover is hinged, and said flange member is slotted and a. portion thereof lisleft in position ex tending in alignment Ywith the top of the cover 22 to provide a finger piece 28, 4as will be clear from Fig. 1. The co'ver 22 is also provided with a downwardly extending flange 29 at the hinged end thereof, the corner 30 at the `flan'e 29 being located at such a distance from the pivots 23 that the same will bind slightly against the end walls 7 adjacent thereto to hold the hinged coverA in an open position after the samehas passed a predetermined angle relative to the body 4 portion 5.
The container is shown as having a cake of powder 31 mounted on a metallic base 32 positioned in the bottom thereof and it will be "noted that the members 9 are of such a size that the same will engage with the metallic backing 32 of the powder cake 31 to thereto.
aid in holding the same in position in the bottomof the box, altho such engagement is not suiiic-ient to prevent removal o the powder and metallic backing and substitution of other powderA therefor. The' container may also receive a powder puff or similar article 33 if desired, Having thus described our invention what we desire to claim and secure by United States Letters Patent is:
In a receptacle, a body portion, a iianged cover hinged thereto, a mirror, and means -for securing said mirror in said lid, comprising opposite pairs of inst-ruck lugs on the flanges of said cover, one pair of said lugs forming) recesses for -the reception of lugs on said ody portion to'hinge the cover In witness whereof, We,` herennto .sub
