Patented Apr. 5,1927.
PATENTFOFFICE.
OSCAR H. ADAMS, F KEOKUK, IOWA.
PIPE WBENCI-I.
Application filed March 24, 1926.
This invention aims to provide a wrench which will be peculiarly efi'ective for handling pipes and other round objects, novel means being provided for adjusting the wrench to suit the Work in hand.
Fig. 1 shows in longitudinal section a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away; Fig. 2
is a fragmental side elevation; Fig. 3 is a top plan; Fig. 4 is a section on the line l.
of Fig. 1; and Fig. -5 is a view wherein the working end of the wrench is viewed edgewise.
The numeral 1 marks a handle. The
handle is provided in one edge with a rack 2. At its inner end, the handle 2 has an enlarged cylindrical head 3. The head 3 has gripping ribs 4. The ribs 4 do not extend straight across the'head from side to side,
but have a slant, as is shown in Fig. 5.
The numeral 5 marks a'rider mounted for reciprocation on the handle 1. The rider 5 has wings 6. A pivot element 7 is mounted in the wings 6. A latch lever 8 is mount ed to swing on the pivot element 7 and is disposed between the wings 6. The latch lever 8 is supplied at one end with laterally extended teeth 9. The teeth 9 are adapted to cooperate with the rack '2. A compression spring 10 is housed between the wings 6. One end of the spring 10 bears against the rider 5, and the other end of the spring bears against the latch lever 8. The purpose of the spring 10 is to maintain the teeth 9 of the latch lever 8 detachably engaged with the rack 2 on the handle 1. a
The numeral 11 marks a hook-shaped jaw having gripping ribs 12. The ribs 12 do not Serial No. 97,062.
extend straight across the jaws from side to s de, but are inclined, as shown in Fig. 5.
The jaw 11 has transversely spaced arms 14. The rider 5 is disposed between the rear ends of the arms 14. The rider 5 is supplied with outstanding pivot elements 15 on which the arms 14 of the jaw 11 are mounted to swing. 4
The jaw 11 can swing on the pivot elements 15, and thus the work is clamped and held between the ribs 12 of the jaw 11 and the ribs 4: of the head 3, so that the work can be turned readily, when force is applied to the handle 1.
What is claimed is In a device of the class described, a handle having a rack and provided at one end with 50 an enlarged approximately cylindrical head,
a rider mounted to reciprocate on the handle.
a hook-shaped jaw cooperating with the head and provided with spaced arms between which the rider is located, means for pivotally connecting the arms with the sides of the rider, a latch mounted intermediate its ends on the rider and adapted to cooperate with the rack at a point between the arms of the jaw to hold the rider in adjusted positions, and spring means for maintaining the latch yieldably engaged with the rack.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
OSCAR H. ADAMS.
