. Application filedJanuaiy 22, 1926. .Seria1=No..82,941.
by whichtthe frame members may be retained 111 a tightlyuclosed position or released la a convenientmanner to jperinit opening of the bag, the clasp being ornamental in appearance. as well as efficient-1n operatloin A furtherfeature is in the provision of a concealed catch whereby the clasp is held in operative position, but which may by proper manipulation be disengaged permitting the clasp to be raised from its normal holding position.
Another aim is to produce a device of this character made entirely of sheet metal by ordinary stamping operations.
These objects are accomplished by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming an essential part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention,'showing its application to a conventional type of frame bag.
Figure 2 isa longitudinal sectional view of the device drawn toan enlarged scale and showing the manner by which it is anchored to a frame.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device but showing the clasp as turned to an open position, affording an underside view thereof.
Figure 4 isa transverse sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
In the drawing apair of bag frame members are designated by the numerals 10 and 10 respectively, the same being of ordinary channel type, hinged at their angularly bent terminals to open and close as will be readily understood.
An anchor plate 11, shaped to extend over the top surfaces of the channels 10 and 10', is provided with a narrow extension bent to enter an opening in the frame member 10 and then turned re-entrantly to be clenched as at 12; the plate is further secured on the same framememberlO by a rivet 13 and its opposite, wider end is curled to produce an eye 14 through which passes a hinge pin 15.
The pin 15 engagesin registering openings in a. pair of lugs 16, the same being formed on one end of a clasp plate 17,prov1ded at its lateral edges with right angled flanges nected at their upper portions by a narrow .-I d bent in such ;manner asnto positively F .l'etalnthe springagainst the unclersidebf' l. e plate. l
18 and 18 adapted to embrace theonter sides Of-the- bag frame members 10 and 10,'asbest seen in Figure 4, these. flanges being confront plate 19. a j .60 [Enclosed between the flanges 18 andw18" is a'flat U-shaped spring having arms 20; and
20', thespring being held at its bight 21 Eloy a clip 22 formed from the clasp plate" :17
The arm 20 of the spring has at its outer, free end an inreaching lug 23 carrying a projecting hook-shaped detent 24, the same being engageable in a keeper 25 rigidly mounted on the frame member 10 and held normally therein by action of the spring.
A rigid lateral projection 26 extends integrally from the outer edge of the spring arm 20, through an opening in the flange 18, 1ts end projecting past the flange to interlock against its outer side, retaining the spring arm firmly against the flange; atthe opposite side is a similarly shaped projection 27, slidably mounted in an opening in the flange 18, the projection being formed on the outer edge of the spring arm 20, the arrangement being such that as the projection 27 is pressed inwardly of the clasp, the spring arm 20 will be flexed and the detent released from the keeper. g
. In operation, the sides are closed and the clasp is turned downward on the hinge axis 15, its side flanges cooperating to hold the frame members in juxtaposition. lVhenthe clasp plate is turned down, the bevelled lower edge of the "detent 24 strikes the keeper and thus is caused to deflect until the hooked portion can enter the loop of the keeper 25, into which it is forced by the fiat spring, thus constituting a secure fastening.
To release the same, an operators fingers are applied to the symmetrical projections 26 and 27, causing the latter to yield under pressure, retracting the keeper, permitting the clasp to be raised by the projections into the unlocked position shown in Figure 3. Although I have described my improve" ments with considerable detail and with respect to a certain particular form of my invention, 1 do not desire to be limited to such details since many changes and modifications may well be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its broadest aspect.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a pair of frame members movable towards and from each other, of a clasp hinged to one of said members to embrace both members, a keeper on the other member, a pair of symmetric lateral extensions on said clasp, one of said extensions being rigid and the other yieldable, a spring in said clasp to normally project said yieldable extension outwardly, and a delent on said spring engageable with said keeper.
2. The combination with a pair of bag frame members, of a hinged element fixed on one member, a keeper on the other memher, a clasp operatively engaged by said hinge element, said clasp having rigid sides to embrace both frame members when in one position, a flat spring secured in said clasp, a detent carried by said spring to normally engage said keeper, and means accessible from the exterior of said clasp to retract the spring and release the detent.
3. A bag fastener comprising in combination with a pair of hinged frame members, 01 a clasp hinged to one member, lateral flanges on said clasp to straddle both members, a U shaped flat spring in said clasp between said flanges, means integ ad with said clasp to retain said spring, a detent on the free end of said spring, a keeper fixed on the mating frame member in which said dctent is normally engaged, and symmetrical projections on said spring, one of said projections being fixed relative to said flange and the other yieldingly carried on said spring.
This specification signed and witnessed this 16th day of January, 1926.
