UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
HERMAN O. WEY, OF HIAWATHA, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CUT-OFFS FOR SHOT-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,326, dated April 20, 1875; application filed January 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN O. WEY, of
- Hiawatha, in the county of Brown and State parts.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists in valve or cut-off devices for drawing off the contents of shot or powder boxes, which will "be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents a boX for pow der, shot, or other material, which is made with any desired number of compartments, B, of suitable size, according to the number of different qualities or sizes of shot, &c. The compartments B are provided with a hinged lid, a, and glass-covered front apertures b, for indicating at any time the size and quantity of shot contained therein, and an inclined or hopper bottom, d, for conveying the contents toward the lower front part of the box. Each box is numbered for designating exactly the different grades contained therein. The bottom of each compartment B is provided, near the front or lowermost part thereof, with a valve or cut-off, G, which is suitably applied thereto, and corresponds with a perforation, d, of the bottom. The valve 0 is made of a vertical connecting-tube, 6, having a horizontal guidecylinder, f, open at the front, and a bottom spout, f. An interior cylindrical tube, g, fits into guide cylinder or casing f, and closes the same by-its flanged face part, which is provided with a button or knob, 9 for turning or sliding the tube 9 readily therein. The interior cut-off tube ghas a rear recess, g which fits the opening of the connecting-tube e, and a side aperture, 9 fitting on the spout f, being so arranged that when aperture 9 is placed over the spout the rear part of the tube communicates with the bottom aperture, and conveys quickly and freely the contents of the compartment to the spout for being discharged. By turning the inner tube the connection is cut off, as spout and connectingtube are closed by the inner tube g. A lug, h, of the inner tube 9 slides in an L-shaped guide-slot, h, of the outer casingf, and defines thereby the open position of the valve when at one end of the slot, while producing the closed position at theother end by pushing back and turning the lug into the rectangular part of the slot, (shown in Fig. 4,) so as to secure the locking of the valve, and prevent any one not familiar with the working of the same from meddlingxwith it, and from spilling shot, &c., in consequence of it. The opening of the valve is accomplished by reversing the turning and sliding motion of the valve, so that in an instant any desired quality of shot, pow der, or similar material may be drawn from the box.
Having thus described myinvention,1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In shot-boxes, the discharge-valve or cutoff attached to the perforated hopper-bottom, and consisting of an outer guide-casing with spout, and an inner turning and sliding recessed tube, adjusted by lug and guide-slot to the open and closed position of the valves, substantially as shown and specified.
HERMAN O. WEY.
