GRATE BAR.
Application filed June 18, 1925. Serial No. 37,919.
My invention relates to grate bars especially adapted for use in burning fine fuel matter.
The objects are to provide a grate bar which when assembled in a grate structure will pass sufficient air for the complete combustion of the fuel; in which the grate surface is made up of small renewable sections which will yield, without buckling or break ing, to any compressive forces that may arise due to the expansion of the grate structure; and which will be so designed that a firing tool may slide over the sections without en gaging or displacing them.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a fragmentary plan view of a grate supporting bar made in accordance with my invention,

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a grate supporting bar and 2 grate sections mounted on the bar. Each bar has a pair of longitudinal members 3 integral with a series of transverse members 4 of irregular or V-shape, and a series of extensions 5 on the outer sides of the longitudinal members adapted to abut corresponding extensions on adjacent bars. The longitudinal members have their sides beveled upwardly and downwardly from the upper edges of the transverse members.
Each grate section consists of a series of spaced cross bars 6 cast integral with a pair of longitudinal ribs 7 which extend up between and depend from the cross bars. The cross bars bend in a horizontal plane, that is, they are either bent to form an angle as shown in Figure 6 or to form a curve shown in Figure 7. The end cross-bars 8 are preferably shaped so that they will mesh with the corresponding end bars of adjacent grate sections when assembled end to end shown in Figure 1, and thus provide a continuous series of uniform cross-bars which afford a maximum air passage between them. The grate sections rest on transverse members -1- and extensions 5 between the longitudinal members 3 and are so proportioned that an air-space 9v is left between the downwardly and inwardly beveled ends 10 of the cross bars and the longitudinal members 3.
The grate supporting bars are assembled side by side on a suitable supporting frame in a boiler, so that the extensions 5 of one bar abut the corresponding extensions of the adjacent bars as shown in Figures 3 and 4. The grate sections are then placed, end to end, on the transverse members 4; and the extension 5. This arrangement provides a uniform grate surface made up of series of small removable grate sections.
The irregular cross-bars will yield to any compressive forces that may arise due to the expansion of the different parts of the grate surface. A maximum air passage is obtained between the cross-bars by abutting the grate sections end to end. The air passages are of such size that the fuel will not readily fall therethrough into the ash pit. Shaping the cross-bars so that they straddle each other prevents a firing tool, as it is slid over the grate surface, from falling between the cross-bars, catching hold of a grate section and displacing the same.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts may be changed Without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A grate structure including a plurality of grate bars arranged side by side, each consisting of longitudinal members, a series of transverse members, and a series of inclined extensions on the outer sides of the longitudinal members arranged to abut corresponding extensions on adjacent bars, in combination with a plurality of grate sections arranged in rows, one row being supported upon the transverse members of a grate bar and the adjacent row upon the extensions of adjacent bars.
A grate structure including a plurality of grate bars arranged side by side, each consisting of longitudinal members, a series of substantially V-shaped transverse members, and a series of inclined extensions on the outer sides of the longitudinal members arranged to abut corresponding extensions on adjacent bars, in combination with a plurality of grate sections, each section consisting of spaced cross bars of substantially V-shape and spaced longitudinal ribs connecting the cross bars between their ends, the sections being arranged in rows, one row being supported upon the transverse meinbers of a grate bar and the adjacent row upon the extensions of adjacent bars.
A grate structure including a plurality of grate bars arranged side by side, each consisting of longitudinal members, a series of substantially V-shaped transverse members, and a series of inclined extensions on the outer sides of the longitudinal rnen'ibers arranged to abut corresponding extensions on adjacent bars, in combination with a plurality of grate sections, each section consisting of spaced cross bars of substantially V-shape and spaced longitudinal ribs connecting the cross bars between their ends, the ends of the cross bars being beveled downwardly and inwardly, the sections be ing arranged in rows, one row being supported upon the transverse members of a grate bar and the adjacent row upon the extensions of adjacent bars.
