F. H. HARDIN REENFORCING CAR BRACKET Original Filed Oct. 14, 1924 ivrzwroze Zia/m lama Patented Mar. 29, 1927.
UNITED STATES FRANK I-I HARDIN, OF BRONXVIiLLE, NEW YORK.
REENFORCING CAR BRACKET.
Original application filed October 14, 1924, Serial No. 743,600. Divided and this' application filed September 27, 1926.
This invention relates generally to car construction and more particularly to new and useful improvements in reenforcing corner brackets for car bodies. This application is a division of an application filed by me October 1 1, 1924:, Serial No. 743,600.
The objects of this invention are to provide an integral reenforcing bracket for cars consisting of a pair of vertical platemembers reenforced at their lower ends by an inwardly disposed triangular gusset plate and having outwardly projecting flange or flanges adapted to receive and have secured thereto one or more walls of a corner post of the car structure.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a unitary reenforcing bracket for cars comprising a pair of upright members disposed at right angles'to each other and reenforced by inwardly projecting gusset plates and provided with vertically disposed depending flanges adapted to be secured to a part or parts of the car underframe and having outwardly and vertically disposed portions adapted to be secured to the vertical posts of the car structure.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts,
hereinafter more fully described and claimed,
and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which j Figure 1 is a top plan view of a reenforcing bracket showing it attached in position to the car underframe.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the same.
In the construction of railway cars it is desirable to reenforce the car ends so that they will properly resist end shocks and crushing stresses to which cars, when in service, are subjected. With this end in view, I provide reenforcing brackets especially designed to be used in the corner structure of the car bodies, said brackets being provided with portions forattachingsame to the car underframe and being further provided with 60 suitable attaching surfaces for receiving and having secured thereto the lower ends of car posts, said attaching surfaces being ofi'set or spaced so as to bring said car posts in proper place with respect to the car structure.
Serial No. 137,982.
Referring by numerals to theacco1npanying drawings, 10 indicates a car underframe provided with side members 11, the latter having outwardly presented horizontally disposed flanges 12. An end sill 14, which forms a part of the car underframe, has an outwardly presented horizontally disposed flange 15. A reentorcing bracket 16 is arranged at each corner of the underframe and consists of a side plate member 17 and an end plate member 18, said members being arranged at right angles to each other and united at their meeting edges. Side plate 17 is provided at its top and rear end with an inwardly projecting marginal flange 17 and end plate member 18 is provided with a similarly disposed inwardly presented marginal flange 18*. A vertically disposed outwardly projecting flange 19 is formed integral with plates or upright members 17 and 18 and the face of said flange 19 is arranged in the same plane with and forms a continuation of the outer face of side plate 17. This flange 19 terminates at its upper end flush with the ends of plates 17 and 18 and is reenforced at said upper end with a horizontally disposed gusset plate 20 which is in the same horizontal plane and merges with the upper portions 17 and 18 of flanges 17 and 18 The lower end of flange 19 terminates flush with the lower edge of a vertically disposed flange 2]. which latter depends from the end plate 18 and is offset laterally relative thereto so as to bear against the outer face of the end sill 14 and is secured thereto by rivets 21. A horizontally disposed gusset plate 22 is formed integral with the depending flange 21 and with flange 19 and serves to reenforce the latter. A horizontally disposed reentorcing gusset plate 24: is formed integral with end plate 18 and flange 19 at a point spaced from plates 21 and 22.
The'lower end otplate 17 has formed integral therewith a depending flange 25 which is offset relative thereto and rests against the outer face of side member 11 being securedthereto by rivets 26. A corner post 27, iuthe present instance Z-shape in cross section, has its web portion presented against flange 19 and secured thereto by rivets 28 and one of the vertically disposed flanges of said corner post rests or bears near its lower end against a vertically and laterally disposed flange 29 which is formed integral with depending flange 25, rivets 30 being used to secure said corner post to flange 29. A gusset plate 31 is secured to flange 25 and flange 29 reenforces the latter.
The lower ends of plates or upright members 17 and 18 are united together by a horizontally disposed gusset plate 32 which when the bracket is in position rests on the underlrame and is secured to the side members by means of rivets 84 and to the end sill by means of rivets 35. An opening 36 is formed in said gusset plate 32. A door post 37 is secured. to plate 18 near the end thereof by rivets 3 8 and a car post 39 is secured to plate 18 intermediate said post 37 and corner post 27 by means of rivets 4L0. Side plate 17 is provided with a series of openings 17 and end plate 18 is provided with a series of openings 18. In this manner the reent'orcing bracket constructed according to my in vention is of strong construction and light in weight, provides e'ltici'entmeans for tying the car body to the car undertrame and has disposed thereon suitable attaching portions for receiving and attaching the lower ends of the car posts thereby reentorcing the car against end stresses and shocks.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, it, is obvious that various minor changes of my improved reenforcing bracket can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:

In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my 15 signature this 20th day of September, 1926.
FRANK H. HARDIN.
