This invention relates to a device for holding and locking loose type in properly assembled order in a galley, which device is of simple and inexpensive construction and capable .of quick and easy operation to hold and lock the type in proper position.

Heretofore it has been the practice in assembling loose type and advertising type or cuts in a galley, to wrap string or cord around the type to form a bundle and there by hold the type properly assembled and in desired position within the galley. The present invention is in the nature of'a clamp and as it may be quickly and easily placed in position to serve the same purpose as the wrapping of the string or cord, it will provide for a saving in time and labor.

With the above mentioned and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the ac-' companying drawnigs, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the inven tron.

Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of a galley showing the device of my invention as it would appear when employed for holding type in the galley.

The embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawing comprises, in the present instance, a relatively straight clamp bar 1 which carries intermediate of its ends and on one side thereof, a circular clamping spring 2. This spring is formed of a single piece of leaf spring metal bent so that its ends overlap, and where overlapped said ends are secured to the bar, 1 by means of suitable fastenings 3, .Thus, the device comprises an elongated clamping strip or bar having projecting from one side thereof a circular compressible clamping spring.

In Fig. 1 there is shown a galley 4 having the usual side and end walls 5 and 6, in which galley, type properly assembled picparatory to being placed in the printing forms, not shown is mounted. 7 designates a block or column of loose type set upin the proper form and which is mountedin one corner of the galley. In this instance the type .is held together by side pieces 8 extending along the margins of the block of type. Herctoi'ore it hold the type in assembled order and in the desired position within the galley, or instead of blocking the type, string or cord is wrapped around the strips 8 to form a bundle of the aype and to hold the type in proper assembled form. This blocking of the type to hold it assembled and in place by the above described use of strin or cord takes up r.-onsiderable time and labor. By use of the automatic lock of this invention, the locking of the type in assembled order and maintaining it in the galley, can be oftected in a much shorter time and with less elicit.

'lo lock the type, the bar 1 is placed against the side of the type, as shown in Fig. l, and the operator then quickly compresses the spring 2 allowing it to engage against the side wall 5 of the galley. The spring force is sullicient to hold the type in assembled orderand in proper position against the opposite side wall 5 and cnd wall 6 of the galley. The operation ot' placing the clamp or lock of this inventioncan be quickly and easily carried out and the removal of said lock or clamp can be effected with equal facility.

If it is desired to provide an end lock for the type, another device as shown in Fig. 1, may be used for this purpose, This device comprises a clamping bar 9 provided with a leaf spring 10 which extends from one end thereof. The bar 9 is adapted to en- 9 gage the end of the type 7 and the sprin 10 is bent so that the end thereof will frictionally engage with the side wall 5 of the galley. .By employing this device in con junction with the side lock of my invention, the typewill be heldsccurely in assembled order and in the desired position in the galley.
