PRINTING STAMP.
Application led August 1G, 1925. Serial No. 49,197.
This invention is for a printing stamp adaptable for use in hand manipulated devices or for machines, and is especially designed for use with marking devices having l rubber type.
The invention relates especially to a stamp for use in marking shipping cartons and the like.
The invention has for its object to provide al marker of this type having readily removable printing` characters which may be easily and readily interchanged, shifted about, removed and replaced, as desired.
Incidentally, the invention is one that readily lends itself to marking with two or more colors.
The invention may be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a marking device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section in the plane of line II-II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a partial transverse section.
Fig. l is a schematic view showing the device incorporated in a carton or other printing machine.
Fig. 5 is a plant view of the adjusting bar at one end of the printing surface.
Fig. 6 is a transverse section in the plane of line VL-VI of Fig. 5.
In the dra-wings. 5 designates a suitable base plate which is preferably curved, as shown. This plate may be a complete cylinder, as indicated in Fig. t or it may be just a portion of a cylinder, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Extending part way across the plate 5 at one end of the printing area, is a fixed strip 6, and at the other end is an adjusting bar or strip 7. Bar 7 may be moved toward or away from bar G by means of suitably arg ranged set screws or bolts 8 connected with the adjusting bar and with a fixed strip r 9, also carried on the base 5. Lock nuts 10 are preferably provided on the set screws, l as shown.
Placed on the outer surface of the base plate, between the fixed strip 6 and the adjusting bar 7, are one or more, preferably several, rubber or other suitable printing elements. I have shown three such elements, a large element 11 having a pictorial.
in Fig. 3. The flangesl of the several elements preferably abut, in vthe manner shown.
The printing elements are retained in place by suitable straps 17, preferably .of metal. These straps overlie the flanges of the printing elements, as best shown in Fig. 3, and have hooks at each end thereof. The hook at one end of each strap is designated 17a and engages fixed bar 6. The hook 17", at the other end of each strap, engages the adjustable bar 7. The straps 17 are, of course, recessed from the printing surface of the printing elements.
With the arrangement as thus described, it is possible to have any desired number of printing elements. The printing elements need only be arranged on the base, after which straps 17 are applied and screws 8 operated to adjust bar 7 to put the straps under considerable tension. As the printing elements are preferably made of rubber,v
the straps will tend to compress the lianges of the elements to frictionally retain the elements against slippage on the base. Since the straps act over a curved surface, their efficiency is further increased.
Printing elements may be easily and quickly interchanged, removed, and replaced,
'and a single base member can be adapted to a great many arrangements.
By removal and substitution of printing elements, the device may be readily adapted to multicolor printing, as will be understood by those skilled in the art.
If desired, graduated markings may be provided along the outer edges of the base plate, as shown at 2O to facilitate the positioning ofthe several printing elements.
In Fig. 4c, I have indicated the base 5 as a cylinder associated with aplaten roller 21, and an inking roller 22, while the article being printed is designated 23.
While I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that various details thereof may be modified and changed Within the spirit of my invention and under the scopel of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
l. The Combination with a part cylindrical base having a. fixed cross bar and a relatively movable cross bar at each side ot a printing area, and fixed temper screw abutments beyond the movable bar, otl a plurality of printing element-s mounted on the base having reduced thickness retaining flanges, a plurality of retaining straps each having a hooked terminal at each end the fixed cross bar and the movable cross bar respectively and with their intervening portions engaging the retaining flanges of the printing elements, and temper screws mounted in the abutments and engaging the movable cross bar for tightening the straps over the anges of the printing elements.
2. The combination with .a part cylindrical base having a fixed cross bar and a relatively movable cross bar at each side of a printing area, each having an outwardly disposed il-shaped edge, and fixed temper screw abutments beyond the movable bar, of a. plurality of printing elements mounted on the base having reduced thickness retaining flanges set edge to edget a plurality ot retaining` straps each having a V-shaped terminal at each end engaging the fixed cross bar and the movable cross bar respectively, and with their intervening' portions engaging the retaining flanges of the printing elements, and temper screws mounted in the abutments and engaging the movable cross bar for tightening the straps over the flanges ot the printing elements.
n testimony Whereot1 I hereunto alii); my signature.
