Another object of the invention is to. provide an economical construction of journal box and wrought metal side frame in which the blank of sheet metal forming the side frame can be cut of a relatively reduced size and at the same time shaped at its ends to provide strong and reliable journal box recesses, a considerable saving in the raw material used in the blank being effected as the result of my present invention.
A further object of the invention is to provide a side frame'from a sheet or blank of metal folded to provide an inner wall and an outer wall arranged in spacedrelation,
each of said walls being-preferably provided with a plurality of truck column portions, a'plurality of top arch bar portions, and a plurality of bottom arch bar portions, said blank or sheet being of a size which will form astrong and reliable frame when folded and united, butof an overall length which will not exceed the overall distances of the journal boxes. Referring to the drawings in which corre-. sponding reference characters designate similar parts in the several views, my improved construction involves a side frame provided with an outer wall 1' and an inner wall 2 formed from a continuous sheet orblank of j straight line which is parallelto an axis of symmetry passing between symmetrical side frame'portions, said portions being pro-- video. with inwardly extending stiffening flanges all of-which are preferably'bent'from one-side of the blank.

The bottom arch bar portion is formed with an upper flange 4 which merges into the flange 3 on the top arch bar portion.

aid flanges being cut from the blank so as to terminate short of the flanges forming the vertically disposed and longitudinally arranged abutment walls of the journal box The interruption in the otherwise continuous flanges 5 is of much benefit in the manufacture of the side frame in that the metal at this point is not weakened by bending and stretching the metal around the corner atthe juncture of the bottom arch bar portion and journal box recess. It will be noted that the interruption occurs in each flange at an advantageous point where the cross sectional area of the metal is of the greatest vertical strength. The flanges 5 may be overlapped or abuttcd and united by welding or riveting.
The side frame is provided at each end thereof with a journal box recess 6, said recess being formed by cutting the metal blank to provide a vertical portion forming an abutment for the inner side of the adjacent journal box and an upper portion adapted to provide a continuation of the vertical portion of the recess, said upper portion being arranged to contact the top of the journal box and terminate in the open end of the recess 6, as clearly shown in Figure 4. In

The flanges are preferably united by'a curved portion 9, the respective portions 7, 8 and 9 of the flanges being shaped to conform to the con tour of the journal box fitted within the recess. The flanges are shown in my present embodiment as slightly spaced apart, although it will be understood that the said flanges may be abutted and united by welding or other means. The top of the journal box is formed with upstanding ribs preferably longitudinally and transversely disposed, the top edges of said ribs contacting the lower faces of the adjacent flanges 8. Projecting from the top of the journal box at the front and rear thereof, are vertically disposed flanges 13 and 14-, designed, respectively, to lie against the outer wall 1 and inner wall 2 of the side frame. The flanges 18 and 1 1 are continued across the top of the journal box and downwardly adjacent the inner wall thereof, said flanges terminating at or about the lower edge of the bottom arch bar portions of the side frame. The flanges are preferably designed to conform to the curvature of the journal box recess and providea firm uniting means extending from the lower edge of the side frame to the extreme ends thereof. A plurality of reinforcing ribs 15 unites the flanges 13 with the top portion of the journal box, and a plurality of reinforcing ribs 16 unites the flanges 14 with the top of the journal box and an adjacent wall of the dust guard well. These reinforcing ribs serve to strengthen the respective attaching flanges in resisting the lateral strains incident to service conditions.
The means attaching the journal box to the side frame comprises a plurality of rivets 17, said rivets passing through suitable openings in the respective flanges 13 and 14, which openings register with the openings 11 in the respective side walls of the side frame. The rivets are preferably arranged between thereinforcing ribs and extend from the lower edge of the bottom arch bar portion to the extreme ends of the side frame. I
The journal boxes are formed in rights and lefts for attachment to the respective. ends of the side frame, the relatively large and continuous flanges, together with the rivets attaching the same, providing a very rigid and strong construction for use in con nection with wrought metal side frames.

The combination with a car truck side frame having inner and outer side walls, ar-' ranged in spaced relation, said side walls being formed with transversely disposed flanges bent to form an open ended recess at each end of the side frame, journal boxes having portions extending into said recesses and other portions thereof disposed longitudinally beyond the ends of the side frame, and means connecting said journal box to the inner and outer side walls of the side frame.

11. A car truck side frame involving a continuous sheet metal blank shaped to form spaced inner and outer side walls, each of said side walls having inwardly projecting flanges at each end of the side frame, said flanges being shaped to provide open ended recesses adapted to receive journal boxes longitudinally of the side frame and designed to contact the inner sides and top portions only of said journal boxes.
12. A car truck side frame involving a continuous sheet metal blank shaped to form spaced inner and outer side walls, each of said side walls being formed with recesses lded on ,said journal boxes :ar-

open at their outer ends to receive journal boxes, and inwardly extending flanges provided on said side walls, said flanges being adapted to provide at each end of the side frame a single upright abutment for contacting the inner side of the journal box and an adjacent horizontally disposed top portion for contacting the upper part of the journal box, said last named top portion terminating in the open end of the recess.
13. A car truck side frame including spaced inner and outer side walls, each of said walls being formed with recesses adapted to receive journal boxes, each of said recesses having but one vertically disposed end wall forming a single abutment adapted to contact the inner side of the adjacent journal box and prevent longitudinal movement in one direction;
14. The method of manufacturing car truck side frames which consists in forming the same from a continuous sheet metal 7 blank having corresponding side frame portions which are symmetrically disposed with relation to the axis of symmetry passing between them, cutting the ends of the blank to form journal box recesses which are open ended longitudinally of the side frame, folding the blank along a line at the top of the frame, and finally uniting the folded blank.
15. The method of manufacturing car truck side frames which consists in forming the same from a continuous sheet metal blank having corresponding side frame portions which are symmetrically disposed with relation to an axis of symmetry passing between them, cutting the ends of the blank to form open ended journal box recesses, bending portions of the blank'adjacent said out ends to provide transversely disposed bearing portions adapted to contact the inner sides and top portionsonly of the journal boxes, folding the blank on a line atthe top, which line throughout its length is parallel to said axis of symmetry, and finally uniting the folded blank.
16. The method of manufacturing car truck side frame which consists in forming the same from a continuous sheet metal blank having corresponding side frame portions which are symmetrically disposed with relation to the axis of symmetry passing between them, cutting the ends of the blank to form journal box recesses which are open ended longitudinally of the side frame, folding the blank along lines at the top of the frame parallel with the axis of symmetry, and finally uniting the folded blank.
