NEGKTIE resrnnnn.
Ap lication filed November 29, 1928. Serial No. 151,537.
The invention relates to a necktie fastener and more especially to the class of custom or ready-made bow tie fasteners.
The primary object of the invention s the provision of a fastener of this character, wherein the cnstoinor ready-made bow tie can be con ntly fa te d i p e t en re i e to the ro of a e lla 11 he ella butto se ving to asten the ollar po he shirt band and when in such position will be held against derangement, thus giving o the tie th ppeara of a hand kn t ed e of the bow type, the faste e be ng manually manipulated so that the tie can be readily removed from wearing position and on removal the collar'is freeto bedetached from the shirt band.
Ano her Object of the invention is the proviSion of a fastener of this character, wherein the latching mechanism for securing the tie position upon the collar button can be manually released to permit the detachment of the fastener from the collar button, the fastener being of novel form and is readily and easily applied to the tie and when thereon will be concealed from view, thus rendering the tie neat and attractive in appearance when worn. I
A further object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character, wherein the parts are assembledin a unique manner so as to render the same compact, invisible from view when applied to the tie as the latter conceals the same in the rear thereof and will permit the ready attachment of orthe removal of said tie, without any exertion upon the user thereof, as, the collar button with which the fastener is en gaged "is freely removable therefrom upon operating the releasing member of the fastenerl A still further object of the invention is the provisionof a fastener of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable readily and easily applied to acustom or ready made tie, whether of the bow or four-in hand type and inexpensive to manufacture.
Vith these and other obj ects in view, the invention consists in the features of constfuct'ion, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
Inthe accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a plan view looking toward the rear of a bow tie showing the fastener constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a top edge View showing a portion of the knot of the tie broken away and the attaching element of the fastener in horizontal section.
c Figure 3 is an enlarged detailed plan view of the fastener per se.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line el l; of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrow. i
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Figure 3 looking in the direction of the arrow. 7 i i Figure 6.is a sectional view on the line 66 of Figure 4 looking in the direction of the arrow.
g r 7 s a ectnalyiew on the line 7 7 of Figure it looking in the direction of the arrow. 7
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring .to the drawing in detail A designates generally a bow type of tie, of the custom or ready-made style having the cross center strip B constituting the knot ,of said tie fastened to a clip C, which may be of any preferred form of construction adaptable to receive the fastener constituting the present inventionand hereinafter fully described. i a
The fastener comprises a shell or casing including a body 10, oreferably made from 9 sheet metal of substantially rectangular shape and a companion closing or back plate 11, preferably made from sheet metal correspondingly shaped to the body 10; which latter at its longer edges and at the ends is formed with bendable flanges 12 and ears 13, respectively, which are bent inwardly and downwardlyupon the plate 11 so as to secure the latter to the body 10 .as will ;be clearly apparent in Figures 1, 5, (Sand 7 of the drawing. The body 10 at the corners thereof has instruck bearing lugs 14: with which contact the plate 11 to hold the latter in spaced relation to said body 10 and to provide interiorly of the shell or casing a chamber orspace 15 in which is adapted to be received a latching device hereinafter fully described.
The body and plate 11 have provided therein coinciding elongated slots 16 centrally located and disposed longitudinally thereof. These slots are adapted to accommodate the shank 17 of a collar button 18, the latter being used in the ordinary well known manner for the fastening of the collar to a shirt band. The shank 17 is flat and formed with a rounded free end 19. Slightly removed from the rounded end 19 of the shank 17 of said collar button 18 in opposite edges are opposed notches 20 for coaction with the latching device as hereinafter more fully described.
Located within the chamber or space between the body 10 and plate 11 of the shell or casing is the latching device, which comprises an inverted substantially U-shaped member, made from a single length of resilient wire having its legs or arms 21 inset in opposed relation to each other relative to the bail or head 22 to lie in a position intersecting the slot 16 so as to snap into engagement in the notches in the stem 17 of the collar button 18 when the shank or stem 17 is inserted through the slots 16 to detachably secure the collar button and fastener together. The free ends of the legs or arms 21 of the fastener are bent in downwardly divergent relation to each other as at 23 and constitute rider terminals for frictional engagement with downwardly divergent guide ribs 241 instruck from the body 10 immediately beneath the slot 16 in said body and plate 10 and 11, respectively, so that when the bail or head 22 is depressed from normal position shown by full lines in Figure 4 to the position shown by dotted lines in said figure of the drawing the legs or arms 21 will be caused to spread apart, thereby disengaging from the notches 20 in the shank or stem 17 of the collar button 18 thus permitting the convenient removal of the fastener carried by the tie A so that the latter can be detached from wearing position. The bail or head 22 projects through suitable slots formed in the top edge of the body 10 a distance exteriorly of the fastener so that it can be manually depressed at will;
In the use of the tie with the fastener associated therewith, the collar button 18 is engaged in a shirt band and with a collar in the ordinary well known manner and thereupon the fastener is brought into position to engage the shank 17 of the collar button, which shank is inserted through the slots 16 in the body 10 and plate 11 of the fastener until the notches 20 are automatically engaged by the legs or arms 21 of the latch and when so engaged the tie A will be secured in position relative to the collar for the wearing thereof.
Now, if it is desired to remove the tie A it is only necessary for the user to depress the head or bail 22 causing the legs or arms 21 to spread apart so that the same will disengage from the notches 20 in a shank 17 of the collar button 18, thereby freeing the tie A to be removed, as will be clearly obvious.
It is of course to be understood that changes, variations or modifications may be made in the structure as comeproperly within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. It is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the fastener will be clearly understood, therefore a more tion has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a collar button having a notched shank, of a necktie fastener comprising a casing formed with a body, a back plate, means at the edge of the body for clamping the back plate thereto, bearing lugs struck from the body engaged with the plate to space the same from said body, the plate and body being formed with openings for receiving the shank of the collar button, a manually releasable latching device confined between the body and plate and engageable with the shank of the collar button to lock the same to the casing, the casing to a necktie, and guide members struck from the body of the casing and frictionally engaged by the latching device to effect the releasing of the latter when depressed.
2. The combination with a collar button having a notched shank, of a necktie fastener comprislng a casing formed with a body, a back plate, means at the edge of the body for clamping the back plate thereto, bearing lugs struck from the body engaged with the plate to space the same from said body, the plate and body being for receiving the shank of the collar button, a manually releasable latching device confined between the body and plate and engageable with the shank of the collar button to lock the same to the casing, means for fastening the casing to a necktie, guide members struck from the body of the casing and frictionally engaged by the latching device to effect pressed, and a bail formed from the latching device and projected exteriorly of the casing to be manually operated.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto.
SAMUEL GOLDSTEIN.
