MEANS FOR PACKING BISCUIT.
Original application led September 7, 1922, Serial No. 586,705. Dvidedazfid this applicatonled November 2, 1923, Serial No. 672,373. Renewed 'March 15, 1926.
Figure 1 is a side view ot thev invention, partly in section and part-'ly broken away.
VFigure 2 is a fragmentary top. planview of the same. Y
Figure 3 is a Jiragmentaryr side view ofthe invention on a larger scale. 1 n Figure 4 is detail fragmentary crosssectional view of a `conveyor tray and the engaging vteeth ot' the removal device.
Figure 5 is a detail diagrammatic view ot' the drive gearing for the carton feed means. The invention has relation to mea-ns tor manufacturing cereal filamentous biscuit, having for an object the provision of means for packing the biscuit, wherein the movenient or removal of the biscuit is used to initiate the conveyance of the biscuit into the lcartons or boxes in which they are to'be packed. Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear. Y
y The inventionY consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as set orth in the appended claims. l
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating an embodiment ot'. the invention applied. to a machine constructed in accordance with .the disclosure of cO-pending application Serial No. 586,705., tiled September 7 1922, -ot which the present is a divisional applicatioin the numeral 1 designates a conveyor, provided with trays 8 adapted each to carry a -transverse row ot biscuit 1. The conveyor l extendshorizontally to sprocket wheel 3a and vertically ydownward therefrom, the trays 3 being` maintained in upright position duringthe passage over said sprocket by any suitablemeans; :tor instance bythe meansshown in the applic-ation for patent oit lil. P. lVebster, Serial No. 552,037 filed April 12, 1922.
According to this construction the pivot Yrods 4 of the conveyor chain links are pro-k vided with depending crank extensions 6, the lower ends of which are olfset to form 4the pivots ot the links 8 of a supplement-ary sprocket chain 9', both chains being endless `and oi' the same length over-all. The two chains, connected by `the "crank extensions 6, form a parallel movement chain couple, whereof the linksmove in parallel andthe connectingextensions move in parallel.
The journal boxes ot' the sprocket wheel shafts are provided each with a depending eccentric 16, held stationary by the bo); and carrying a sprocket wheel or annulus 16V The sprocket wheels 16 -serve as guide sprockets or idlers and, together with the action .of the shoulders 19, are adapted to prevent any movement olf the supplementary chain that would throw the trays out ot horizontal position, sinceY said trays are rigidly mounted upon the rods et.
Prior to the downward movement o't the trays `from sprocket 811'-, the teeth L17 ot .a stationary biscuit removal device or comb l? will engage transverse grooves 118 of the bottoms ot the trays 3, beneath the biscuit .19in said trays, whereupon the trays will pass downwardly as the chain passes downward'ly around the sprocket, away from and below said teeth, which .will uphold the biscuit resting thereon.` At the same time the rear `iianges or sides 3 of said trays will push' the biscuit `along the teeth` oi` said comb, until said flanges pass belowthe tops ot said teeth, trom the position shown in 'full lines .tothe position shown in dotted lines y v in Figure 3. The succeeding tray 3 now coming along, its front flange 3 will vengage the biscuit resting upon said teeth and will further push the same along; the ent-ire -movement of the biscuit row by the push ot both front and vrear flanges ofthe tray Vbeing approximately the length of a biscuit and a half.
` The movement of the biscuitk by the Side flanges 3 ot the conveyor trays is utilized to bring them Vupon spiral inclined ways 49, wherein the biscuit will descend Ythrough force of gravity and will be caused to assume parallel vertical position, trom their previous parallel horizontal position, said ways being brought more nearly together as they extend rate the successive major rows of biscuit into minor rows of a predetermined number of downwardly, to thereby sepa-` :my oilur suiisiluc driving14 moans muy bc employed.
