i This invention relates to identification de-.
vices for attache cases, hand bags, pouches, or other articles, such devices being of'that typecomprising a card, tablet or; the like contained within a suitable frame or holder and adapted to bear the name, or the'name and address or other identification mark, of
theowner. The object of, the invention is to provide improved means for securing the identification device to the article in a neat and effective manner. V i 4 The invention consists essentially in attaching the identificationdevice to the face of the attache case, hand bag or other article through the medium of an ornament, initial .letter'or plate which is applied to the opposite face of the article, or of the material thereof, and which is securedto-the identification device through the medium of prongs or other parts passing through the material. These prongs are preferably carried by the ornament, initial letter or attachment plate, and, after passing through the material of the article, they are preferably inserted through holes in the frame or'holder CELT". rying the card' or :tablet, being then bent over into 1 grooves in the said part so as to lie clearofthe card or tablet. The part carrying. the card or tablet preferably comprises a flat plate having three of its edges bent up into flanges to receive the edges of the name card so as to forma frame for the latter, the open end of the frame being closed by a detachable metal strip or edging carrying a celluloid covering adapted to :fit over the card or tablet.
Figure 1 of the accompanyin drawings is an elevational view of ahand bag having an identification device attached thereto in accordance with this invention, showingthe initial letter upon the outside of the, flap of the bag, whichinitial letter servesjto securetheidentification device upon the inner faceof the said flap.
.Figure 2 shows, upon a larger. scale, the frame or holder of the identification device upon the inside of the flap, the card or tablet for bearing the name and address being removed. I i t Figure 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33, Figure 1, upon a larger scale. 7
Figure 4 is a vertical section on the line 4-4, Figure 1, also upon a larger scale.
Figure 5 shows the initial letter and the parts of the'identification device when separated, the flanged. member and i being shown in section 't F igure 6 illustrates airmetbcd of attaching the frame ,or holder, in which being secured to the inner face of the closure flapl of a hand bag, and comprises a fiat metal rectangular plate 2, thesides-and one' 's a section on the line end of which are bent upjandfashioned into inwardly-extending overhanging flanges. 8,.
so as to form a frame open. at oneend. Thisv frame is adapted to receive a card 4 intended to bear the name, or the name and address or other identification mark, of the owner,-
the said card being slid in through the open end of theframe so that its edges.en-,
gage beneath the edges of. the flanges 3.
The card 4 may be held in position by a detachable end-member 5. formed by, a strip of sheet-metal folded over along the middle, the folded-over portionsbeing clenched onto the opposite faces of'a celluloid covering 6 which is ,slid. intothe frame over the card. plate '2 is formed along the-middle with a longitudinally-disposed.groove (see Figure 2), whilst formed'in this groove, at suitable distances apart. are. a series" cream ratedholes or apertures 8. j These, holes are adapted to receive the -prongs of an attachmentmember. applied to the outer face of The main. portion of '.-the metal;
the flapof thehand bag so as to hold the identification device or frame member'in place. This attachment member is, 1n the example shown, in the form. of an initial. letter 9?, having-upon its'r'ear face a'j pair} of-prongs' 10 adaptedjto. bepassed through the material of the flapl ofthe bag and through two of thejholes .8 -in the metal plate 2 of the identification device.
ofthe latter is applied to the inner face of the flap 1 of the bag, and the initial the flap, the prongs 10, with which the letter is provided, being passed through the g j Thus, to attach the identification device, the metal name plate or frame memberQ material of the flap and through two (if g the holes 8 in the plate, a-series of holes being providedin the latter for the purpose I initial letters of different sizes.
prongs have been passed through the of permitting of the ready attachment of After the holes 8 in the plate 2, as stated, their pro jecting extremities arefbent down into the groove .7 inrthe said plate 'so'that they thus lie clear of the'name card 4, per-I mitting' the latter to be slid freely into place.- Inthis manner the plate or frame member 2 may be firmly secured in position,- "the bent-over ends ofthe attachment,
prongs 10 being hidden from view by the name card i, the latter, which is readily detachable, being protected, when inposition, by the celluloid covering .6. This method of attachment gives a very neat and attractive appearance to the hand bag, which is greatly improved by the initial letter upon the outside of the flap. The identification device and initial letter may obviously be applied to any other suitable part of the bag.
Instead of employing an initial letter for securing the identification device in place, an ornament, in the form of an animal, bird or other figure, orof any suitable design, maybe used for a-similar purpose, the ornament being provided with prongs which are passed through the material of the bag, and through the holes in the metal plate or frame carrying the name'card, and, the ends of the prongs being bent down into a groove, as in the previous ez'iam'ple.
If desired, the identification device may be secured in place, as shown in Figures 6 and 7, by a plain metalplate 9", instead of being held in place by aninitial letter or ornament. This plate 9, which may be of a rectangular shape, is preferablylocated behind the lining l of the flap l of the bag (see Figure 7) so that it is hidden from view, whilst it maybe provided, as shown, with four integral prongs 10, one near each corner, the said prongs after being passed through the material of the lining, extending through holes 8 formed at the respective corners of the plate or frame member 2 of the identification'device. Each ofthese holes 8 is situated at the one end of a short groove 7, the grooves being preferably disposed parallel to the side edges of the plate or frame 2, as illustrated. After the prongs 10 have been engaged through the'h'oles 8 they are bent down into the grooves 7, so that they thus lie clear of the name card,
It is obvious that in any of the above arrangements any suitable number of at-' tachment prongs may be provided, with a corresponding number of holes in the plate or frame carrying the name card, or particu larly where an attachment plate is provided in lieu of anlmltial letter or ornament the name plate orframe may carry the prongs,
the latter being passed through holes in the attachment plate andbent over; or other means may be provided for secur ng the identification device to the ornament, initial letter or attachment plate.
Although the invention has been specifically described as applied to a handbag, it may also 'be applied to attache cases,
pouches,,liats, and to various other articles.
Having fully described my invention,
What I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. An identification device for attache cases, hand bags or similar articles, comprising a tablet-receiving pocket for applie cation to one face of said article, said pocket being formed of asheet of suitable material having three of its edges turned over toward its front face and forming three sides of a frame around tablet insertedin said pocket, said sheet of material also having a depression in its outer face and having perforations through. said depressed portion, a cover plate slidable in said pocket 1 over the tablet contained in the latter, a
' ing a'carrier frame for an identification tabletv disposed upon one face of the article said'carrier frame having holes and grooves in its base, a cover plate adapted to slide into the carrier frame and retain the tablet in position therein, an attachment member in the form of an initial letter disposed upon the opposite face of the article, and prongs carried by the attachment member and adapted to pass through the materialof the article and the holes in the base of the carrier frame and to beturned over into the grooves in the said base for securing the attachment member to the tablet carrier frame. 7
I In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CLARENCE FLINT.
