This invention relates to brassieres and proposes the construction of an article of apparel of this class in which provisionis made for supporting the bust in a substantial and comfortable: manner at the same g time ailording'a positive resistin and reducing means for that part ofthe gure at the diaphragm. One of'the objects of the invention is to construct a brassiere having an unstiffened body" portion surrounding the bust and a relatively stiff diaphragm section.

my invention consists in the improved brassiere illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification, and particularly claimed, and in such variations and modifications thereof as will 4 be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates.

In the modification of the nvention shown in Figure 4 the diaphragm reducing section is inserted in the body portion as a.

Itis obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the nventlon and it is therefore to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to the specific construction shown and described.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

'1; A brassiere comprisinga bust supporting portion having the lower part thereof provided with inserts elongatable circumferentially of'the brassiere, a diaphragm reducing section underlying and secured to the front of the bust supporting portion and having circumferentially elongatable portions lying in the zone of said inserts and tion overlying said diaphragm reducing section increasing the. stiffness of the brassiere in the area of said diaphragm reduoing section, and to the front of which said diaphragmreducing section is secured, said bust supporting portion being provided with elastic insertsin the zone of said diaphragm reducing section,v fastening means for securing said bust supporting portion around the body thereby tensioning said diaphragmv reducing section n'a circumferential direction, said diaphragm reducing section being provided with independent m-eans securable about thebody'for impart ing additional lateral tension to said diaphragm reducing section and independent tensioning means carried by said fbu's't supporting portion for imparting tension to both said bust supportingportion and diaphragm reducing section in a direction transverse to the line ofpres'sure imparted by both of said other tensioning means.
