Description

UTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORIN O. WITHERELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No; 16,158, dated December 2, 1856.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, O.l O. WITHERELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a side view of my wrench with a portion of the fixed jaw broken away. Fig. 2, is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3, is a side view showing how the jaws of the wrench can be shifted.
Similar letters of reference in each of the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching the fixed jaw of the wrench to a handle, which has its end made eccentric, by a fulcrum pin, and forming a slot in said jaw for the reception of the movable jaw in the manner presently described, whereby, by simply forcing against the handle in a certain direction, the shank of the movable jaw can be clamped firmly in its place and when desirable by forcing against said handle in an opposite direction, can be set free so as to be readily and conveniently adjusted to any sized nut. This arrangement also renders the wrench more convenient for use and simplifies its construction.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand my invention, Il will proceed to describe the same.
A, is the handle; its end a is made curved or eccentric.
B, is the fixed jaw, it is provided with an open slot C, in its forward end, in which the eccentric end of the handle extends some distance and is confined there by a fulcrum pin D, asshown. i,
E, is the movable jaw; it is provided with a shank f, which passes at right angles, instead of parallel, to the handle, through the slot C, between the eccentric end of the handle and the rear of theslotC, as shown.
G, is a spring lever for keeping the movable jaw in the slot, either when in or out of use, and also for preventing its shifting too suddenly while being adjusted.
It may be evident from the drawing and description, that, while using the wrench, by simply forcing the handle in the direction of the red arrow, the eccentric end of the handle will be caused to bite upon the movable jaw at Z), and thereby firmly confine said jaw in the slot. And in case it is desirable to shift the movable jaw so as to take in a larger nut, that, by simply forcing the handle in the direction of the black arrow or back to its original position the jaw can be conveniently and readily adjusted.
In Figs. l and 2, the movable jaw is shown arranged so as to open at right angles to the handle and owing to this the wrench is far more convenient for taking hold of nuts under many circumstances. Instead, however, of having the movable jaw arranged as shown in Fig. 2, it may, by simply turning the fixed jaw around to the position shown in Fig. 3, be arranged to open parallel with the handle as shown in said figure.
I/Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Attaching the xed jaw B, of the wrench to a handle, which has its extremity made eccentric, by a fulcrum pin D, and arranging the movable jaw relatively to said end of the handle and to the Xed jaw; substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
