LATCH FOB WINDOIVS.
Application filed January 23, 1922. Serial No. 531,126.
The invention relates to windows, particularly to the swinging type, and refers to latches for these windows. The invention has for one of its object the provision of a latch which will lock the window sash in closed position and will initially open the same. Another object is the provision of a latch which is operated by the means for opening and closing the sash. Further objects of the invention reside in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.

Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a window frame and sash construction with a latch embodying my invention, the sash being shown in closed position;

Figure 3 is a similar view of a portion of the frame and sash, showing the position of the parts during the initial opening of the sash;
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the positions of the parts during the final closing movement of the sash;
Figure 5 is a front elevation of the latch and its bracket;
Figure 6 is an end elevation of the keeper;
Figures 7 and 8 are respectively a side elevation and a front elevation of a modilied construction of latch and its bracket.
1 is the window frame and 2 the sash adapted to fit in the frame opening. 3 is a pivot secured to one end of the top rail 4 of the sash and to the block 5, which latter is vertically slidably mounted in a side member of the frame, this side member being preferably channel-shaped. 6 is a lever connected to a side rail of the sash intermediate its ends as by the pivot 7 and also connected to a side member of the frame near its lower 5 end by the pivot 8. There is a corresponding vertically movable pivot as well as lever connected to the oppositeside member of the frame and the adjacent side rail of the sash. With this arrangement, the sash, in closed position shown in Figure 1, can be moved to an open. position shown in Figure 2 by lowering the top rail 4 of the sash, which movement through the levers 6, swings the bottom rail 9 of the sash outwardly.
For the purpose of locking the sash 2 in 5 closed position and also initially opening the sash or initially disengaging the same from the frame 1, l have provided the latch 10 which is pivotally mounted at 11 upon the bracket 12 secured to the inner side of the bottom weathering for the sash, this weathering being located upon the bottom mem ber of the frame. There is also the cooperating keeper 13 secured to the bottom rail 9 of the sash 2 and extending upwardly upon the rear side of the sash. This keeper has the back 14 which is spaced from the base 15 and the inside of which is engaged by the locking portion 16 of the latch 10 when the sash is in closed position. The outside of the back 14 is adapted to be engaged by the finger portion 17 of the latch 10 to initially disengage the sash from the frame, or in other words, initially open the sash. The normal position of the latch 10 during the closing movement of the sash is that shown in Figures 1 and 5 so that the back 14 of the keeper during the final closing movement of the sash rides over the locking portion 16 of the latch. The lower end of this back is cammed or inclined as shown at 18 as is also the front edge 19 of the looking portion of the latch, whereby the latch is rotated and the locking portion is moved downwardly by the keeper to a position as shown in Figure 4 until the back passes the locking portion when the latch swings in the opposite direction and the locking portion engages the inside of the back, thereby holding the sash in closed position as shown in Figure 1.
The initial opening of the sash is secured by swinging the latch 10 to lower thelocking portion 16 of the latch out of engagement with the back 14 of the keeper and to then engage the finger portion 17 of the latch with the back 14 of the keeper, continued rotation of the latch swinging the bottom rail 9 of the sash outwardly to a position shown in Figure 3. or cammed to accelerate the speed of open ing the sash.
The rotation of the latch 10 in opposite directions is limited by means of the lateral stop 20 upon the bracket 12.
The sash shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive is designed to be opened and closed by means of a chain, and this chain in addition to opening and closing the sash, actuates the latch 10. In detail, 21 is a roller journalled in the lateral bracket 22 upon the inner side The back 14 is inclined of the top rail 4, and 23 is a roller journalled in the end portion 24 of the latch on the side of the latch pivot 11 opposite to the locking and linger portions 16 and 17 respectively. 25 is a chain having one end 26 connected to the end portion 24: of the latch and having the other end 27 connected to the flange 28 upon the back of the keeper 13. This chain extends upwardly from its end 26 over the roller 21, downwardly to a point below the latch where it may be readily reached by the operator, and then upwardly and laterally over the roller 23 to the keeper 13. The arrangement is such that with the part-s in the position; shown in Figure 1, downward pull upon the chain 25 in the direction indicated by the arrow in this figure, will first rock the latch 10 upon its pivot 11 to release the locking portion 16 and engage the finger portion 17 with the keeper to initially open the sash, continued pull of the chain in the same direction then lowering the top rail 4 of the sash and swingingthe bottom rail 9 of the sash outwardly, thereby opening the sash to a position as shown in Figure 2. If it is desired to close the sash downward pull upon the chain 25 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figure 2, will first rock the latch 10 about its pivot to swing the same into the position shown in Figure 1 and then pull the bottom rail of the sash inwardly, thereby raising the sash top rail. The cammed lower end 18 of the keeper back 14 engaging the cammed front edge of the locking portion 16 of the latch momentarily rotates the latch moving the locking portion 16 downwardly until the cammed lower end has passed the latch, when continued movement of the chain in the same direction again returns the latch to the position shown in Figure 1 and engages the locking portion 16 with the inside of the back to hold the sash in closed position.
In the modified construction shown in Figures 7 and 8, the latch 29 is designed to be used particularly with. a sash operated by a pole and instead of being held in normal locking position during the closing of the Sash as by means of the weight of a depend ing length of chain as well as the pull eX- erted by the operator, it is held in normal locking position by means of a coil spring 30 surrounding the pivot 51 of the latch and having one end connected to the latch and the other end connected to the bracket'32. Also, the end portion of the latch 29 on the side of the pivot 31v opposite to the l0oking and finger portions of the latch, has the aperture 33. adapted for engagement by the pole to swing the latch to bring its finger portion into contact with the keeper of the sash and initially open the latter. The coil spring also quickly engages the keeper when the sash is closing to lock the sash in closed position before any possibility of rebound of the sash.
While I have shown my invention as applied to a balanced construction of ventilator it is to be understood that other constructions of sash as well as latch may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
hat I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a frame and a swinging sashthereon, of a keeper on said sash, a bracket on said frame, a latch pivotally mounted on said bracket having a portion over which said keeper rides during the closing movement of said sash for engaging said keeper to lock said sash in closed position and also a second portion engageable with said keeper for initially opening said sash, the secondportion of said latch being in inoperative position when said sash is being closed, and means for limiting the pivotal movement of said latch in opposite directions.
2. The combination with a frame having an opening therein, and a swinging sash in the opening having a bearing member at its upper end, of a latch upon said frame near the lower end of the opening having a portion for locking said sash in closed position, and a second portion for initially opening said sash, and a flexible connection passing over said bearing member and having depending portions, one of said portions being connected to said latch to actuate the same to initially open said sash and the other of said port-ions being connected to said sash to close the same and being operatively connected to said latch to move the same into locking position.
3., The combination with a frame having an opening therein and a swinging: sash in the opening having a roller at its upper end, of a latch pivotally mounted upon said frame at the lower end of the opening and having a portion for locking the sash in closed position, and a second portion for initially opening said sash, and a roller, and a flexible connection secured at one end to said latch for actuating the same to initially open said sash and secured at the other end to said sash to close the same. said flexible connection extending upwardly from its point of connection to said latch over said roller upon said sash downwardly to a point below said latch and then upwardly and over said. roller upon said latch to said sash.
l. The combination with a frame having an opening therein, of a sash having a pivot vertically slidable in. said frame, and a lever pivotally connected to said frame and sash. of a roller at the inner side of said sash and at its upper, end, a keeper upon the inner side of saidsash and at its lower end, a bracket upon the inner side of said frame at the lower end of said opening, a latch pivotally mounted on said bracket having a portion engageable with said keeper to hold said sash in closed position, and a second portion engageable with said keeper to initially open said sash, a roller pivotally mounted upon said latch, a stop upon said bracket for limiting the rotation of said latch in opposite directions, a chain connected at one end to said latch for actuating the same to initially open said sash and connected at the other end to said keeper to close said sash, said chain extending upwardly from its point of connection to said latch over said roller upon said sash downwardly to a point below said latch and then upwardly over said roller upon said latch and laterally to said keeper.
5. The combination with a sash movable to open and closed positions, of a latch having a portion for locking said sash in closed position, and a second portion for initially moving said sash to open position, means for movin said latch to unlock said Sash and to move said sash to open position, and means for moving the second portion of said latch to inoperative position when said sash is returned to closed position.
6. The combination with a swinging sash and a keeper thereon, said keeper having a cammed portion, of a pivoted latch having a portion engageable with said keeper for initially opening said sash, said latch also having a cammed portion engageable with the cammed portion of said keeper during the closing movement of said sash to lock the latter in closed position.
7. The combination with a sash movable to open and close positions, of a latch having a portion for locking said sash in closed position, a finger portion for initially moving said sash to open position, and means for moving the finger portion of said latch to inoperative position and for returning said sash to locked position,
8. The combination with a frame and a sash swung at one of its ends upon said frame, a latch pivotally mounted upon the frame for holding the sash in closed position, and means engaging the pivotal end portion of the sash for opening the sash likewise engaging said latch for releasing the same.
9. The combination with a frame and a sash having an end portion pivoted upon said frame, a latch comprising members carried respectively by the free end portion of the sash and by the frame, and means en gaging the pivotal end portion of the sash for opening the sash, likewise engaging the latch member upon the frame for releasing the latch.
10. The combination with a frame and a sash having an end portion pivoted upon said frame, a latch member pivoted upon the frame for holding the sash closed, a control element carried by the pivotal end portion of the sash for opening the sash, and means engaging said latch member and control element for swinging said latch member to release position and for subsequently actuating the sash to open position.
11. The combination with a frame and a sash having an end portion pivoted upon said frame, a latch member upon the frame for holding the sash closed, and a common means engaging said latch member to effect release of the sash, engaging the pivotal end portion of the sash for opening the sash, and engaging the free end portion of the sash for closing the latter.
12. The combination with a frame and a sash, of a pivotal support for the sash slidable in said frame, a latch member upon the frame for holding the sash closed, and a common means for releasing said latch member and for sliding said support in the frame to effect opening of the sash.
13. The combination with a frame and a sash, having an end portion pivoted upon said frame, of an elongated flexible control member having portions respectively engaging the pivotal end and the opposite end of said sash for actuating the sash to open and closed positions respectively.
14. The combination with a frame and a sash pivoted at one end upon said frame, a member projecting from the pivotal end of said sash in a direction substantially transverse to the sash, a guide element carried by said member, a guide element carried by the end of the frame which receives the free end of the sash, and an elongated flexible member in engagement with said guide member upon the sash for actuating the sash to opened position and passing over said guide member upon the frame, and further engaging the free end portion of the sash for closing the latter.
