UNITED STATES EDWIN W. DELPHI, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
SQUARE.
Application filed August 7, 1925.
This invention relates to an improved square, the general object of the invention being to provide a square with a marking device so that the piece of material upon which the square is used can be marked without the use of a pencil.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically point-ed out in the appended claim.
Inv describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing the square equipped with my invention.
Figure 2 is a view showing a slight modification.
Figure 3 is a top view of Figure 1.
Figure f1 is a section on line 4-4 of Figr ure 1.
FigureI 5 is a detail view of Figure 2.
As shown, I make the blade A of the square of two parts 1 and 2, which have their upper edges spaced apart to form a space for receiving the stem of a T-shaped strip 3, the head of which has parts of its lower face engaging the upper edges of the parts 1 and 2. rlhe edges of this head are formed with the teeth 4t which have their points projecting beyond the outer faces of the parts 1 and 2 so that when the square is placed on a piece of material, the teeth on one edge of the head will engage the piece and thus when the strip is moved, the teeth Serial No. 48,846.
shoulder formed on the handle and its other end against a button 9 on the stem. This spring tends to hold the strip in its forward position so that when a mark is to be made, it is simply necessary to press upon the button with the thumb or finger of the hand holding the square so that the strip will move along the work piece and make a mark thereon at the top edge of the square and then when the button is released, the spring will return the strip to its normal position and deepen the mark so that a clear line will be made by the teeth to indicate where the piece is to be cut or otherwise treated.
Figures :E and 5 show a slight modification in which a spring strip 8 is used instead of a coiled spring, a portion of the strip being bent to form a finger engaging part 9 ogn the end of the strip which replaces the button 9. This spring 8 is secured to the lhandle of the square.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided simple means which forms part of the square, for marking work pieces so that a pencil is not required.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention willbe readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Vhat I claim is A square comprising a handle and a blade, the blade being formed of two parts which are separated, a strip positioned in the space between the two parts and having teeth on its outer edge which extend at right angles to the plane of the blade, said strip having a portion extending beyond the handle of the square, spring` means interposed between the end of the strip which extends beyond the handle and the handle for holding the strip in one limit of its movement and a finger engaging part connected with the projecting part of the strip.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
