UNITED STATES NANDOR HQNTI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
Application filed September 10, 1925. Serial No. 55,459.
My invention relates to amusement devices and has for its object to provide" a device capable of being folded in various ways to effect differentcombinations and more particularly contemplates the provision of a foldabl picture device in which'a plurality of pictorial representations are capable of being combined with each other in various combinations by predetermined folding of the device. Other more specific objects will appear from the descriptionhereinafter and the features of novelty will'be pointed out in the claims. 7
ln the accompanying drawings, which show an example of the invention without defining its limits, Fig. 1 is a face view of the amusement device in an extended condition; Fig. 2 is a face view showing the device in one of its folded conditions and Figs. 33, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are similar views showing additional steps in the folding of the device.
In the illustrated example, the amusement device comprises a sheet of foldable material, preferably paper, on a given surface of which a plurality of individual units 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 are reproduced in any suitable manner; in the example chosen for the purposes of illustrating the invention, these units comprise pictorial representations of which 10 may be said to be the main picture or unit and the other units 11, 12, 13, and 14 may be' designated as secondary units or representations. It will be understood that the pictorial representations appearing on the various units of the sheet may be replaced by other pictures or by other material which, for the pur ose of simplifying the description, will all e included in the term pictorial representations. The unit 11 is foldable relatively to the unit 1.0 on a folding line 15 while the units 12, 13, and 14 are foldable relatively to each other and to the unit 11 on folding lines 16, 17, and 18 respectively; it will be noted, by reference to Fig. 1, that the representations produced on the units 11, 12, 13, and 14 are fragmentary representations of predetermined pictures. These fragmentary pictorial representations are of such character as to be capable of being combined with each other and with the main pictorial rep- ,resentation a by folding the sheet upon the folding lines vary the characteristics of the picture which is presented to view.
In utlllzlng the device, the sheet is folded upon itself on the line 15 so that the units 11, 12, 13, and 14 he in surface engagement with the unit 10 upon the rear face thereof so that at this stage the device appears in the form illustrated in Fig. 2. the main unit 10 being exposed to view. In this condition of the device, the section 14 is located in registry with the upper portion of the main unit 10, while the units 13 and 12 are positioned in registry with intermediate portions thereof and the unit 11 is in registry with the lower portion of said main unit 10. The folded sheet thus corresponds to a single shcethaving the unit 10 and the units 11, 12, 13, and 14 produced upon its opposite surfaces resl'iectively. \Vith the parts in the position, illustrated in Fig. 2, the section 14 may be folded downwardly on the folding line '18, the corresponding portion of the unit 10 being coincidentally folded out of sight so as to bring the unit 14 into the position indicated in Fig. 3 in which the fragmentary pictorial representation 1) is brought to view and combined with that portion of the pictorial representation a which remains in view, as shown in Fig. 3; the character of the picture is thus changed. By again folding the doubled sheet in the same direction, now upon the line 17, the unit 13 will be brought into view while the unit 14 and an intermediate portion of the unit 10 is hidden from view. The fragmentary. pictorial representation 0 appearing on the unit 13 thus becomes combined with the lowermost portion of the pictorial representation a, which still remains exposed, so as to produce the effect shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. If the doubled sheet is now unfolded on the line 17 to again bring the section 14 into View, a new combination may be secured by folding the doubled sheet from its lower end upwardl on the line 16 to bring the unit 11 into View and to thus combine the pictorial representations 6 and d with each other to produce the effect shown in Fig. 5. The doubled sheet may now be unfolded on the line 18 to hide the unit 14 from view and to make the intermediate and upper portions of the unit 10 visible so that at this stage the pictorial representation of and a portion of the pictorial representation a are combined to produce the result shown in Fig. 6. By again folding the doubled sheet from its lower end upwardly, this time on the line 17, the unit 11 will be hidden and the unit 12 will be brought into view so as to combine the pictorial representation c with the upper portion of the pictorial representation a to produce the effect shown in Fig. 7. It will be obvious that any number of results, each different from the other, may be produced by means of a proper combination of main picture and secondary picturcsand that all sorts of amusing or other pictorial effects may be pro duced.
The principal novelty in the present invention resides in the fact that all of the representations are produced upon the same face of the sheet of material so that the latter is capable of being easily produced by printing and is consequently adapted for production in magazines, newspapers, and the like in the form of a picture cut-out. The device requires no skill in its use and may be utilized as a medium of instruction by producing predetermined subject-matter upon the sheet and the units thereof.
Various changes in the specific form shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim: i
1. A folding amusement device comprising a folda'ble sheet divided by parallel folding lines into a plurality of successive parallel zones, a main picture on one side of said sheet, a plurality of pictorial units within said zones, each of said units being complementary to the uncovered portion of the main picture when folded thereover, those units which abut when the zones are folded over in opposed directions to completely cover the main picture being also complementary to g each other.
2. A folding amusement device comprising a foldable sheet having a main picture on one side, a plurality of parallel zones on the other side foldable along the boundary lines of said zones and successively over each other and over the main picture and toward each other in each of two opposed directions, pictorial units in each zone so arranged that each zone is complementary-to the uncovered part of the main picture and as it is folded over said main picture forms a different picture with the uncovered part thereof while each of those two zones which are adjacent when the main picture is wholly covered by zones folded toward each other are comple-,
mentary to each other and together form a complete picture.
3. A folding amusement device comprising a sheet of foldable material, a main picture produced upon one section of said sheet, a plurality of fragmentary pictorial units produced upon the same surface of said sheet upon a contiguous section thereof, the said sheet being foldable upon itself along a line between said sections to bring the main picture and the pictorial units back to back, each of said units being complementary to the uncovered portion of the main picture when folded thereover, and those two units which are adjacent to each other when the main picture is wholly covered by zones folded over said main picture in opposite directions being complementary to each other.
In testimony whereof I have my hand.
