. WORK-HOLDING DEVICE.

This invention relates to work holding devices for drills and more particularly to a vise used with drills of that character adapted to operate on irregular work where accuracy is required. The invention will be hereinafter shown and described with reference to its application to holding umbrella handles or the like where it is desired to drill a small hole substantially in the center of the handle to a predetermined depth to receive the umbrella rod. It is, of course, however, to be understood that without material alteration or modification the device will work on other materials and articles as well.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a self-contained device of the above general character which may be easily operated and with great accuracy and rapidity, at the same time allowing the operator full opportunity to handle and manipulate the work to be operated upon.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character which may be inexpensively manufactured and assembled.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character which will operate with a minimum power to accurately center the work held therein in a quick acting and positive manner.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out in connection with the accompanying sheets of drawings illustrating one of various possible embodiments of the invention and in the several views of which corresponding reference characters denote similar parts.
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the vise associated with a drilling machine.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view through the vise or work holding member.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the same, and,
Figure t is a side elevational view of the same.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 5 indicates a pedestal or support for the combined drill and vise, and is provided with a table 6 upon which is mounted a motor 7 forming a convenient source of power for driving the drill. As herein showm the motor is provided with a belt 8 passing over pulley on shaft 10, which shaft drives the drill shaft 11 through beveled gears 12 as shown. This drill shaft is the usual type provided with a rack 13, meshing with a pinion 14 for moving the same vertically with respect to the work to be operated upon. The operating mechanism for reciprocating the shaft 11 comprises a foot lever 15 connected by means of a link 16 to a flexible member 17 passing over groove pulley 18 thence partially around a wheel 20 on the same shaft as the pinion 14. Thus 'by depressing the foot lever 15 the drill shaft 11 will be forced downward ly. A. second flexible member 21 is secured at one end to wheel 22 which is also fixed to the pinion shaft while its opposite end connects with spring 23 thus causing a return or upward movement of the drill shaft when the foot pedal is released.
The lower end of the drill shaft 11 carries a chuck 24 provided with an internal thrust bearing of any desired type for reducing friction. The chuck carries a drill 25 for operating upon the umbrella handle 26 as shown. This chuck will also act as a depth gauge for controlling the depth of the hole.
As herein shown an umbrella handle is engaged by a quick acting self setting vise as shown in detailed views, Figures 2, 3 and 4, This vise includes two movable jaw members 27 and 28 fulcrumed as at 29 in slida'bly reciprocable base members 30 and 31. The base members 30 and 31 have depending side portions 33 and 34: which form adove-tail connectionwith a bed plate 35 adapted to be adjustably secured to a post of the drill. The bed plate is cut away as at 35 for the reception of the work as clearly indicated in Figure 1. Simultaneous movement in a direction to and from each other is imparted to the base members 30 and 3l'and associated jaw members 27 and 28 by means of a link connection which comprises links 36 pivoted to members 30 and 31 and to a disk or wheel 37. The disk is fixed to a stub shaft 38 mounted from the bed plate 35 to which shaft is keyed a handle 40. 7
As ,hereinbefore described, the jaw members 27 and 28 are fulcrumed by pins 29 which permit of a swinging movement independently of the lineal travel of the base members, and are urged during non-gripping relation into a canted position with respect to the base members 30 and 31 by means of springs 42, as shown in Figure 3. Thus, as the jaws are brought together upon initial rotation of the handle 40, they contact along a line designated as at 43, it being understood that no work has been inserted between the jaw members. Further rotation of the handle causes the jaws to further advance until the jaw faces contact throughout their depth, such action being permitted by reason of the jaws turning about their fulcrum points 21 against the action of the springs 42, and in a plane normal to the plane of the bed plate 35. There is thus provided a gripping action across the work held within the jaws and a simultaneous raising of the jaw faces, which acts to center the work. Upon reverse rotation of the handle, the springs 42 assist in initially urging the jaw faces away from each other to release the work. Upon the insertion of the work, the jaw faces are advanced and engage the work in the manner above described. Thus by turning the handle a quarter turn the jaws 27 and 28 are moved towards and from each other as desired. Both jaws are provided with recessed faces having leather linings d6 as shown in Figure 3 so as to grip the work firmly yet without marring or injuring the same.
In operation the handle 35 of this device is moved to a position to open the jaws and the umbrella handle or the like is inserted up through the opening in the bottom whereupon the handle is moved in the opposite direction to actuate the base members 30 and 31 towards each other. The umbrella handle extends into the opening between the adjacent faces of the jaw members 27 and 28, which opening is in substantial axial alignment with the cut out portion of the bed plate, and the handle is thus gripped and centered in operative position by the jaw members. Then depressing the foot "lever 15 the drill is moved downwardly into engagement with the handle and bores the hole automatically to the proper depth. On releasing the foot pedal the spring 23 returns the drill to normal position after which the handle 40 is moved in the opposite direction to release the work. It will be noted that the drill is foot controlled thereby leaving both hands free to manipulate the gripping handle and work.
In the event that the work holding device is to be used independently of a drill press, it is intended that any conventional form of base block or support in which the base members 30 and 31 can be reciprocated and having a central cut out portion may be substituted for the bed plate 35 as de scribed. here the work is of a greater diameter or thickness than the depth of the depressions in the jaw faces, which will, of course, be usual, it will be understood that the jaw members are swung about their fulcrums by their engagement with the work in the same manner as when the jaw faces actually contact with each other. It will be further evident that by reason of the swinging of the jaw membersand the resulting movement of their jaw faces from a nonparallel relation when the jaw members are in initially canted position their substantially parallel relation taken up when the work is engaged therebetween, an improved centering of the work with respect to a drill is obtained.
It will thus be seen that the present invention provides a simple and practical deviceof the above general character at apted to operate upon articles such as umbrella handles in a rapid and accurate manner.
The device may be inexpensively manufactured and assembled and believed to accomplish, amon others, all of the objects and advantages herein set forth.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a work holding device of the character described, a bed plate having a cut-out portion for the reception of the work extending therethrough, oppositely disposed base members mounted on the bed plate and adapted for lineal travel to and from the cut-outportion, aw members fulcrumed in said base members for swinging movement independent of the lineal travel of the base members, the opening formed between the gripping faces of the jaw members for thereceptiou of the work being axially aligned with the cut out portion of the bed plate and means to actuate the base members whereby the jaw members grip and Center the work extending therebetween.
2. In a work holding device of the character described, a bed plate having a cutout portion for the reception of the work, oppositely disposed basemembers mounted for lineal travel in the bed plate, jaw members fulcrumed in the base members for swinging movement independent of the lineal travel of the base members, and having their gripping surfaces extending substantially axially with respect to the cut out portion of the bed plate, means normally urging the jaw members in canted position relative to the base members, and means to actuate the base members whereby the jaw members grip and center the work extending therebetween.
3. In a work holding device of the character described, a bed plate, oppositely disposed base members mounted for lineal travel to and from each other in the bed plate, oppositely disposed jaw members fulcrumed in the base members and adapted for movement independent of the base members, means normally urging the jaws in canted position relative to the base members, in which position the opposite gripping faces of the respective jaw members are in nonparallel relation, and means to move said base and jaw members towards each other whereby the gripping faces of the jaw members move into substantially parallel relation to grip and center the work therebetween.
4:. In a work holding device of the character described, a bed plate adapted to be associated with the post of a drilling ma chine, oppositely disposed base members mounted for movement to and from each other in the bed plate, jaw members fulcrumed in the base members for swinging movement independent of the movement of the base members, means normally urging the jaw members in canted position relative to the base members, the gripping faces of the members being in non-parallel relation when the jaw members are in canted position, and means to move the base members toward and from each other, the said movement of the base members toward each other causing the aw members to engage the work positioned therebetween to be centered and the opposite gripping faces thereof to move into substantially parallel relation, said means comprising a rotatable stud shaft mounted on the bed plate, a handle associated with the shaft, and a link connection between the shaft and base members.
5. In a work holding device of the character described, a bed plate adapted to be associated with the post of a drilling machine, oppositely disposed base members mounted for movement to and from each other in the bed plate, jaw members ful crumed in the base members for swinging movement in a plane normal to the plane of the bed plate, springs normally urging the jaw members in canted position relative to the base members, and means to move the base members toward and from each other, comprising a stub shaft mounted on the bed plate, a link connection between the shaft and the base members, a handle fixed to the shaft for rotation therewith, said shaft, upon initial rotation, adapted to advance the base and jaw members in said canted position until the jaw members engage the work along their upper face portions, and upon further rotation to swing the jaw members about their fulcrums until the jaw members engage the work substantially thru the depth of their jaw faces to thereby center and grip the work therebetween. 7
6. In a holding device of the character described, a bed plate having a cut-out portion for the reception of the work, oppositely disposed base members mounted in said bed plate for lineal travel to and from the cut-out portion, jaw members fulcrumed in said base members, the opening formed between the gripping surfaces of the jaw members for the reception of the work being axially aligned with the cut out portion of the bed plate, springs normally urging the jaw members in canted position with respect to the base members, said jaw members having recessed portions in their adjacent jaw faces, yielding linings positioned in said recessed portions, and means to impart movement to the jaw members in a direction towards each other whereby the jaw members engage and center the work positioned therebet-ween.
