PACKAGE HOLDER AND OPENER.
Application filed May 25, 1925. Serial No. 32,730.
The invention is a cover for cigarette the closed position, and the end 4 may be packages having an opening in onecorner provided with an opening S'as shown in through which the paper may readily be Figure I removed from a corner of the package. The inner edge 9. of the opening 2 should 6 The object of the invention is to provide be placed back from the edge of the casing 'a means for efiiciently opening a package of just far enough to permit the seal to be cigarettes or the like. broken as thegcorner of the"'pac'kageof Another object-of the invention is to procigarettes is removed and the edge'lO should vide a cover for a package of cigarettes or be down far enough to permita cigarette to 10 the like which will protect the package. be taken from the package. It 1s understood that this knife may be stationary or movable in an opening, or of any suitable design and may be located in any suitable manner. It will be observed that the knife is in the upper corner of the casing and will cut the side of the'package along the upper edge as the package is forced into the casing. A roughened surface 23 may be provided on the casing for scratching matches and the casing may be provided with a stand as indicated by the numeral 2% when it is used on counters or in stores or the like.
It will be understood that changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. One of which changes may be in the des gn of the casing, another may be in the location or size of the opening or in the use of a different style of opening at each corner or in the use of either of the openings with the design shown in Figure 1, and still another may be in the design of the ejector, as it is understood that any suitable means may be used for forcing the package out of the casing.
The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. To use the device, for cutting a package of cigarettes or the like, the package may be inserted into the open end 5 of the casing and it will be observed that by tearng the cover of the package around the edge of opening, the package Will have a neat opening through which the cigarettes may readily be taken and the seal of the package will be broken. The package of cigarettes may then be readily removed from the casing or if desired, the cigarettes may be kept in the casing so that as the package is placed in the pocket it will not be broken or injured. The movable knife shown in Figure 6 and which may be held in a slot may be moved backward or forward, or around to cut any type of opening that may be placed in the device.
It is also understood that this device may be used for all kinds of packages in addition to cigarette packages, such as breakfast foods and other package goods.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, a rectangular shaped casing having an opening in one corner thereof, said opening being of sufficient size to permit the corner of a package that may be placed therein to be torn away and the seal of the said package broken, said casing having another opening in one edge below the said former opening, a hinged closure at the opposite side of the casing, a hinged cover for the opening in the corner of the said casing, and a suitable means for eject'ng the package from the said casing.
2. ln a device of the class described, a rectangular shaped casing having an opening in one corner thereof, said opening being of suflicient size to permitthe corner of a package that may be placed therein to be torn a ay' and the seal of the said package broken, a sharp edge extending into the sa d casing to engage and cut the said package, said casing having another opening in one edge below the said former opening, a hinged closure at the opposite side of the casing, a hinged cover for the opening in the corner of the sa d casing, and a suitable means for ejecting the package from the said casing.
