ATTORNEYS.
ALFRED W. FORWOOD, OF GEORGETOWN, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,402, dated March 30, 1875; application filed February 5, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED W. FoRwooD, of Georgetown, in the county of Scott and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thill and Pole Couplings, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of Fig. 2, taken on the line a: a, showing the axle and clip, the adjustable box, and the thills. Fig. 2 is a top view of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the axle. B is the axle-clip. O is the adjustable box behind the journal. D is the arm thereof, and E is the adjusting-screw. F is the thill or pole journal. Gr represents the thills, and H the draft-pin. The draft-pin H passes through the jack I, which jack is made a part of the axle-clip B; but the jack may be otherwise attached. The journal receives the draft-pin in the ordinary manner, the latter being secured by a screw-nut, J. The adjustable box 0 fills the space between the journal and the clip B, and is fitted into the jack, as represented. The forward side of the box is made a half-circle, O, to receive the journal F, while its rear side bears against the clip. The arm D curves from its upper side back over the clip, and near its end is the adjusting-screw E, the end of which bears upon the upper portion of the clip. When the draftpin becomes worn and the connection loose, so that the thills or pole rattle, the set-screw E is turned down, which throws the arm D up, and consequently the circle 0 forward, so that the box fits closely to the journal and prevents all rattling.
This device is designed to take the place of the rubber usually placed behind the journal for the same purpose. The rubber keeps the joint tight; but it is almost impossible to attach the thills when the rubber is in, and it is quite as difficult to place the rubber after the thills are attached, and a separate machine is usually employed for this purpose.
By my invention the thills may be detached and. so placed with ease, and the joint kept as tight and snug at all times as when rubber is employed, and with far less trouble.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The box 0 0, having a lever-arm, D, adjustable by a set-screw in relation to the clip B, for regulating the approach of the box to journal F, substantially as set forth.
ALFRED W. FORWOOD.
