Description

TATE
WILLIAM SOGHEFSKY, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROCESSES OF EMBOSSING WOOD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,290, dated March 23, 1875; application filed February 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SocnEFsKY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Embossing Wood, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the embossing of wood, more especially of wood veneers, with metallic leaf; and in carrying out my invention I select suitably-seasoned wood, and coat the same with glycerine on its surface to be embossed, and afterthe wood has absorbed the glycerine I cover the said surface in whole or in part, as is required, with metallic leaf, such as gold, silver, or copper, and then proceed to emboss the same, employing for this purpose a die or dies which have previously been heated to the proper degree. The dies may have any suitable configuration or design which it is desired to impart to the metallic leaf and wood, the said glycerine serving to moisten the wood, and to prevent it and the leaf from being discolored by the action of the heated dies, so that the portion not touched by thedies can be easily removed by a brush, leaving the wood in its original color at such points.
In some instances, and especially when silver-leaf, or other leaf liable to tarnish, is used, a coat of varnish may be applied over the leaf to advantage.
By my invention various articles of wood, such as fancy boxes, $50., or veneers intended to be applied to such articles, may be enibossed with various ornaments in a simple and cheap way.
It is evident that the leaf may be laid on the wood to be embossed, or it may be applied from the dies.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The described process of embossing wood with metallic leaf by treating the Wood, or portions of the same, with glycerine, applying the leaf, and embossing with heated dies, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of February, 1875.
