This invention relates to improvements in cutting chains for coal mining apparatus, the
general object ofthe invention being to make each link in sections, the sections to be bolted together, with means for clamping a bit in place between the sections, so that the bits can be easily and quickly replaced when worn by new ones.
Another object of the invention is to place the removablesection at the rear so that the removable sectiontakes the wear and canbe replaced when worn.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for preventing lateral play' of the removable section.
This invention also consists in, certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement offthe several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and m which Pigure 1 is an elevation of the, improved lin Fi ure 2 is a perspective view of the de- In these views, 1 indicates a link of a cutting chain, said link being formed with an outwardly extending forward part which provides a recess to receive the removable rear art 3 which is held in place by a bolt' -5- which passes through the said removable part and the front part of the link. The part 3 is connectedwith the forward part of the link by the dowel pin 6 which engages a recess 7 in the said section or part 3. The forward part of the link and part 3 are formed with the bit engaging parts 8,that on the section 3 being in the form of a groove to receive a portion of the bit. These parts are inclinedly arranged so as to hold the bit at an angle, as shown in Figure 1. The bottom part of the section 3 is provided with a curved recess 9 for engaging a curved edge on the link, which acts to seat the section and to-prevent lateral movement thereof. The upper edge of the section 3 is rounded, as at the bottom of the groove, if the'bit should become worn or broken and thus prevent damage to the link.
By having the rear part of the link removable, this part can be replaced by a new one when it becomes worn, and by simply loosening the bolt, the removable part can be backed away from the bit to permit the bit ,3. This edge of the section 3 acts to engage to be removed. The recess 9 and the part of the link that engages the same not only act to prevent side pla of the removable part, but also help the b0 t to hold said 'part in position.
The action of the bolt in moving the parts together will act to clamp the bit in place, so-
one flat face engaging the lower clamping surface and its angle face engaging the angle-shaped groove in the other clamping surface, so that the bit is firmly held in place when the sections are placed in clamping position by the bolt and nut. I 7
Each bit has a cutting oint at each end so that it can, be reversed to bring a new cutting point into use when the'first point has become worn. The bits are very small so that a great number can be'easily carried by the operator, and it is not necessary to re-sharpen the bits.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the bits can be easily and quickly placed in the links and that they are firmly held in place so that there is no danger of them I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
.What I claim is 1. A chain link for a cutting apparatus comprising a forward outwardly extending part and a removable rear part arranged behind the forward part, a bolt passing through the forward and rear parts for holding the rear part in position, a bit clamped between portions of the forward and rear parts, the outer-edge of the rear part extending beyond the outer edge of the for ward part.
