Between the spaced impressions of the blocks 1 to 4, (that is on the bands 13,. C, F, G,) impressions .are made with the-side-border block 7.

After the printing of the strip, the strip is cut into separate rugs along lthe center lilies of the alternate. pairs of impressions of the blocks 1 to 4 upon which the fill-iu blocks 5 and 6 have also been impressed. Thus the strip shown in Fig. 8 is cut at the right-hand endof the band A and between the bands H and A. `The result ot' the method is that each rug is provided not only with a border, corner figures and endborder figures, but also with a center 'figure and side-border figures, as shown in Fig. 8.

It will be readily understood by those skilled in the `art that other blocks may, if desired, be utilized to print either a solid field or a figured field on each band of the rug.

The invention may be carried out in a `still more simple manner by means ot the blocks shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11. The

block 9 contains a centrally-positioned symmetrical figure 9 adapted to serve either as the center figure of a rug or as the middle figures in the end-borders of two adjacent rugs. The block 10 contains spaced figures 10a, 10" adapted to form the outer portions of the end-borders of two adjacent rugs. The block 11 has two figures 11, 11" positioned at the ends of the block to form parts of the side-borders of the rugs. A

The method of printing by means vof these' block 9, for example in the bands K, M, and

K of the stri shown in Fig. 12.l In register with eac alternate impression of the block 9, an impression is made with the block 10. Thus the block 10 is impressed upon the bands K, and K', but not on the band M. Impressions are made with the side-border-bloek 11 on all the bands between those impressed by the block 10, for

example on the bands L, M and N. The,

strip is then cut into separate rugs along the center lines of the bands on which the block 10 has been impressed, that is on the center lines of the bands K, K. The vresult of the method, as shown in Fig. 12 is to provide each rug with a border, an endborder middle figure, and also with a center figure.

From the foregoing examples of methods embodying the invention, it will be seen that by forming/,different arts of the end-border i design on 'separate b ocks or sets of blocks, I have made it possible to use one block. or one set of blocks, to print not only a part of the end-border but also a part or all of 'terasse a center designon leach rug, and, also, if desired to print side-border middle figures 0n each rug. l/Vhile for the sake yof sim-` plicity, I have, in the examples given, illustrated the use of only one or two colors, in practice a large number of colors are used iu the border figures and center figure, a separate block being, of course, provided for each color. It is apparent that, especially ii a large number of colors are used, the invention eflects a material reduction in the number of blocks necessary. lt. has, l believe, for the first time, made. it possible, as a practical matter, to print rugs with a center design in a block printing machine. l

' It should be clearly understood that the invention is by no means limited to printing the particular designs and figures illustrated. For the sake of illustration, simple geometrical figures have been used. but in carrying out the invention the figures of the design may be as complicated as desired and may be 0f any decorative orpictorial form.

l/Vhat is claimed is:

1. The improvement in the art of printing rugs, which comprises forming parts of blocks to print a design atan intermediate.

3. The improvement in. the art of printing rugs, which comprises forming the middle and outer portions of end-border designs on separate blocks, and utilizing the first of said `blocks to print on each rug a center figure, as well as to print a part of the' endborder.

4. The method of making printed rugs from strip material, which comprises printing a pair of adjacent end-border middle figures at intervals alongthe strip, printing the remainder of av pair of end-border designs m register with each alternate pair of middle figures, cutting the strip -into separate rugs on the center lines of said pairs of mid- K dle figures, so that the .other alternate pairs of middle figures provide a; center figure in each rug.

6. The method of' making printed rugs from strip material, which comprises printingpairs of adjacentend-hordcr middle figures and corner figures at intervals along the strip, printingin the remainder of -a` pair of end-border designs in. register with each alternate pair of said corner and middle figures, cutting the strip into separate rugs on the center lines of. said pairs, so that the other alternate pairs of middle figures and corner igures providca center figure and a side-border ligure in each rug.

7 The method of printing rug designs on a'strip, which comprises making spaced iinprcssions with blocks providing an end border middle design. completing the end border on alternate sets of impressions yon said blocks, While utilizing the other impressions thereof as a center design.

, 8. The improvement in the art of printing rugs on a long strip of material, which consists in providing blocks having oppositelv turned middle designs, and utilizing said blocks to print an end-b0rder middle figure at each end of each rug and a center figure on each rug.

9. A block for use in printing rug designs on a strip of material, having a middle bor,- dcr figure and vtwo corner figures of Which the lower one correspon-ds to the upper half of the middle ligure andthe upper one to the lower half of the middle figure.` y

Two blocks for use in a block .print-ing machine for printing rug designs on a strip of material, of Which one hasl a symmetrical figure atits middle, and the other has spaced symmetrical figures at its ends arranged to cooperate with the middle figure of the first hlock in fel-ming end-border designs at the adjacent ends of each two rugs.
