Application filed March 26, 1926. Serial No. 97,530.
This invention relates generally to water shoes used when walking across a stream of water, the invention having more particular reference to manually operated water shoes I? which will enable the wearer to navigate through the water.
The invention has for an object the provision of an improved Water shoe of simple and novel construction, and arrangement of parts.
For further comprehension of the inven tlon, and of the obyects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description, and accompanying drawing, 5 and to the appended claims in which the 5 of the driving clutch, as used in combination with my improved device.
As here embodied my improved water shoes comprise buoyant members 10, of any suitable shape, preferably pointed, at the front, as at 11, and having a platform 12, located at or near the center or middle. The above mentioned construction being such as will support the weight of the wearer.
The treadle 13, is attached, at or near its center, to the shaft 14, which has attached at or near one extremity a gear 15, meshing with pinions 16 and 17, attached at or near the extremities of the shafts 18 and 19, respectively, which have also attached thereto, at or near their other extremities bevel pinions 20 and 21, respectively, meshing with the bevel pinions 22 and 23, respectively, attached at or near the extremities of the cross shaft 24, the said bevel pinion also meshing with the bevel pinion 2% attached at or near one extremity of the cross shaft 25, which has also attached at its other extremity a gear 26, meshing with a gear 27 attached at or near one extremity of the propeller shaft 28, which extends beyond the stern 29, of the said buoyant member 10 and has attached thereto a propeller 30.
It being understood that the above mentioned shafts and cross shafts are rotatively mounted in suitable bearings.
It will be understood that the said pinions 16 and 17, are attached at or near the extremities of the said shafts 18 and 19, respectively, by means of clutches comprising a plurality of balls 81, located in tangential apertures 32, suitably formed in the said pinions 16 and 17, adjacent to the said shafts 18 and 19. It being understood that the said tangential apertures are oppositely positioned in the said pinions 16 and 17, so as to rotate the said propeller 30 in a forward direction, when the said treadles 13 are pivoted forward and backward.
It is obvious that I have provided a means of propelling my improved water shoes when the treadle 13 is pivoted forward and backward.
It being understood that an upright or vertical support may be attached at or near the said front 11 of the said buoyant member 10, not shown on the accompanying drawing, which is used to steady or support the wearer of my improved device, by gripping or holding same in the hands, instead of the stabilizers, or weights 33, which are also used to steady the wearer.
While I have above described the preferred form, construction, and arrangement of the several elements employed, it will be understood that the device is, nevertheless, susceptible of considerable modification therein, and I therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. lVater shoes comprising buoyant members adapted to support the weight of the wearer, a treadle attached at its center to a shaft, a gear attached to the said shaft, meshing with pinions and operatively connected to a propeller, said pinions provided with clutches, as a means of propelling the said buoyant members when the said treadle is pivoted forward and backward by the foot of the wearer.
2. Water shoes comprising buoyant members adapted to support the weight of the wearer, a treadle attached at its center to a shaft, a gear attached to the said shaft, meshing with pinions and operatively connected to a propeller, said pinions provided with clutches comprising a plurality of balls located in tangential apertures of the said gear, adjacent to the said shat", as a means of propelling the said buoyant members when the said treadle is pivoted forward and backward by the foot of the wearer.
3. In a device of the class d scribed buoyant members pointed at the front, and having a platform located at the center of the said buoyant member, said buoyant members adapted to support the weight of the wearer, a treadle attached at its center to a shaft, :1 gear attached to the said shaft, meshing with pi'nions, said pinions provided with a clutch, said pinions operatively connected to a propeller, as a means of pro pelling the said buoyant members when the said treadle is pivoted forward and backward by the foot of the wearer.
