This invention relates to regulators of the vibratory electromagnetic type, such as are used in connection with shunt. wound electric generators to niaintain a substantially constant. voltage of output.
In regulators of the kind in question, it is common to provide two windings, one of these windings being connected constantly' across the main terminals of the generator. The other winding is utilized to increase the rapidity and regularity of Vibration of the regulator, and for this purpose it is so connected, in one of several ways, as to act either as a boosting winding or a bucking winding, that is to say, its connections are such either that it assists the main regulator Winding'when the contacts of the regulator are closed, but not when they are onen,v or that it opposes the main winding when the contacts are open, but not when they are closed. In either such arrangement the magnetic null unon the armature of the regulator diminishes suddenly when the contacts are drawn apart. so that the armature is immediately permitted to close the contacts'again. and thus a rapid. steady vibration is maintained, affording a smooth and steady regulation of the generator.
The object of the present invention is to achievelthe same character of operation in a vibratory regulator. without the necessity of comblicating itsconstruction by the use of a divided winding` or two windings` on I have discovered that this may be accomplished by conynecting the Winding of the regulator in the manner hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
The drawing is a diagram of an electric system comprising a generator and a regulator connected in accordance with the present invention.
In the illustrated system a generator 1 is shownv conventionally. having main brushes or terminals 2 and 8, and a shunt field-winding 4. To secure a certain degree of inher- 1'1. with the main conductor 7 and thus With the main terminal 3 of the generator. One end of the field-winding'li is connected as already described. while the other end is connected with one of the generator brushes. other than the brush 3` through two resistors 12 andlf, arranged in series with the windmg.
When the voltage nroduced by the generator is at or below the desired amount. the current passes freely through the fieldwinding 4. by way of the regulator contacts and the wire 11, since these parts are connected in shunt around the resistors 12 and 13. VVhenever the voltage rises above the desired amount for which the regulator is adjusted. the magnet of 'the regulator causes the armature to open the contacts` thus throwing the resistors 12 and 13 into action to ciit down the flow of current through the field-winding, and reducing the generated The magnet 8 of the regulator is provided. as shown` with a single continuous winding` of which one end is connected to the main conductor 6. and thus to the generator terminal 2. The other end of this winding is connected to the resistors 12 and 13 at the point of their mutual connection. This arrangement results in the following oneration: when the. regulator contacts are closed. if it be assumed thatthe generator terminal 3 is nositive` current will flow from the main conductor 7 through the resistor 13 to the regulator winding` and thence to the Vmain conductor 6 and the main terminal 2. Current may also flow. from the conductor 7 through the wire 11 and the contacts of the regulator to the resistor 12. and thence through the regulator winding. Under these conditions. therefore the regulator is energized by a relatively strong current. fiowing through the resistors in parallel.
When the regulator contacts are senarated, current can no longer fiow to the regulator winding through the resistor 12. and the current which flows through the resistor 13 is divided. 1oart of it flowing through the regulator winding` and the rest through the field winding of the generator.. Accord-K ingly, the current in the regulator magnet is "greatly reduced, and the' armature is permitted vimmediately to close the contacts again, in the'same manner as if the regulator Were provided With a boosting or booking -Winding While the resistors 12 and 13 are, 'or convenience, described as independent elements, it Will be obvious that they need not be so constructed, but that the necessary connections may be made when using a single continuous length or winding of resistance Wire, in which case the reference-numbers 12 and l'may be understood to refer merely to the two parts into which the resistance material is diiided by the vintermediate connection With the regulator winding.
-The oregoing arrangement ntirely eliminates the necessity of a divided or compound winding on the regulator, but accomplishes the same result without the use of any` additional parts.
