FIGURE wrrnnnnn TOY. Y
Application filed September 28, 1923. SerialNe.4 665,284.
`This invention relates to a toy, and relates.
V mechanically operable figures constructed so that when the combination is set into oper' ation the vehicle and figures ywill be act-uated to simulate coordinating vehicle propelling activity; the more specific provision of atoy in which the vehicle simulates a childs coaster wagon and the figures are arranged fore and aft thereof in wagon pull` ing and pushing positions, the wagon rand figure ensemble being operable to uniquely simulate the propulsion of the vehicle by the pulling and pushing action of the ligures; and the still further provision of a ligure toy in which a vehicle in the form of a childsl wagon is combined with a mechanically operable ligure arrangedv at the rear end thereof -in sitting posture with mechanism provided for coordinately propelling the vehicle and operating the said figure in life-like and natural semblance of a child moving a coaster wagon by pushing action.
Other and ancillary objects of the invention comprehend the provision of a mechanical igure toy made of few and simply coordinated parts producing a construction which is relatively strong, durable and inexpensive. Y j
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the ele-Y ments and their relation one to the other as hereinafter more particularly described and sought to be defined in the claims, reference being had toV the accompanying drawings which show a preferred embodiment of my invention, and in which:
Fig. l is aside elevational view of the figure toy showing the parts in one stage of a cycle of operation, and
Fig. 2 is an elevational view thereof with parts in cross-section showing the same in a different stage of a cycle of operation.
-Referring now more in detail to the drawings, the figure toy comprises generally a vehicle made preferably to simulate a childs coaster wagon generally designated as W, a tigure VF at the front end of the vehicle arranged in position. to simulate when operated a drawing or pulling of the vehicle,`
a second figure F arranged at the rear end of the wagonv and preferably in sitting posture, positioned to simulate when operated a pushing activity of the wagon W, and a" l mechanism generally designated as M operable for propelling the vehicle along the ground or other support s and for causing the ligures F and F to simulate coordinating vehicle pulling and' pushing action.
lhe wagon XV may be made in any desirable shape or form, and may be Couveniently constructed out of sheet metal, the
said wagon including a. body l0, a front wheel set l1 and a rear wheel set l2, the front wheel set being freely rotatable on. a shaft 13 journalled in an inverted U-shaped frame ll which may be swivelly connected as by means of the rivet 1'5 `to the front of the wagon body 10, the rear wheel set 12 being preferably iXed to a shaft 16 journalled in the depending side brackets 17, the wagon further including the draft tongue y18 provided with the draw bar 19.
The front ligure F desirably is made of sheet metal and comprises a hollow body portion 20 having the fixed arms 2l extending rearwardly and attached to the draw bar 19, and oscillatably journalled onthe body 10 there are provided the movable lower limbs 22 and 23 movable on the` pivot pin 2li, the limbs preferably comprising loosely jointed upper and lower members 22 222 and 23', 232; the construction being such that when the upper limb members 22', 23 are oscillated, the lower limb members 222, 232 -will be oscillated with an accentuated swinging motion so as to vividly simulate a rapid ruiming motion of the gure.
rlhe rear figure F may also comprise a hollow body 25 provided with the arms 26, the said body being arranged in sitting posture on the rear end of the vehicle, as clearly shown in the drawings, and oscillatably journalled on the body, as on the pivot pin 27, I provide the lower limbs 28 and 29 which also preferably comprise the loosely jointed upper and lower members 28', 282 and 29, 292, this so as toproduce an accentuated swinging motion of the lower limb, members when the upper members are oscillated.
The mechanism M desirably comprises a spring motor 30 having a winding'key 31 l il and a holding ratchet 3Q, the motor beingv connected to a gear 33 which meshes with a pinion 341 lined to a gear 35 and rotatable on a shalt 36, the gear 35 in turn meshing with a pinion 37 lined to the rear wheel shalt or axle 16, the construction being such that when the spring motor is energized the gearing system will drive the rear wheel sst l2 to propel the vehicle.
For operating the mechanical ligure il" to produce a simulation of the wagon pushing action, the limb members 28 and 29"' are oscillated by means ot' the rotation ot the shalt or axle 1G, and to this end the limb members 28 and 29 are provided with the extensions 37 and 372 delining arms to w lich are connected the connecting rods or pitmen 38 and 382, the lower ends ot which loosely connected to the opposed cranlr portions 39 and 392 which may conveniently be formed integrally with the shalt or axle '16. lilith this arrangement it will be obvious that when the vehicle is propelled the lower limbs oie the ligure F will be oscillated in semblance ol' wagon pushing action.
ln order to enhance the motion ot the rear ligure E', the construction further Iincludes means whereby the body oi the rear ligure is rocked to and tro as between the positions shown in -lligs. l and 2 by the oscillation ot the lower limbs, and to this end the lower part of the ligure body 25 is provided with cut-away portions Ll0 (one ot which is shown `in the drawings), i` which cut-away portions the limb members 28 and 29 are movable, the intcrengagement between these parts being, however, such that when the lower limbs are oscillatcd, the limb members 28 and 29 forcibly striire the body at the cut-away portions to impart to the same a to and iro rocking movement, the body being to this end pivoted on the pivot pin 27. y
For actuating the lower limbs of the front ligure F, the front aide or shalt i3 is also made in the form ol a crank shalt provided with the oppositely arranged crank portions Lil', 412 to which are connected the connecting rods or pitmen l2, dQZ, the connecting rods being in turn lattached to the extensions or arms a5 and termed integrally with the limb members 22 and 23.
The operation ol the ligure toy will in the main be fully apparent from the above detailed description thereof. lt will be apparent that upon energizing the spring motor the vehicle will be set in propelling motion and such motion will cause the actuation of the front and rear figures F and ll" in coordinating natural semblance to wagon propeiling activity, the l'ront ligure being actuated so as t-o simulate a rapid running and pulling motion, and the rear ligure being coordinately operated to simulate an energetic wagon pushing motion.
nordsee the iront end ol the wagon ar- Won pulling relation and pro- "iatable lower limbs, a ligure end the wagon arranged in vided w at tlie rear wagon pusM oscillatable lower limbs, in 'or mechanism on the wagon having a driving connection with one i' the sets ot wheels, and means connecting the iront set ot wheels with the f rel tion and provided with limbs of the iront ligure and th rear set ol wheels with the limbs ot the rear ligure, whereby when the motor mechanism is op lrated to propel the wagon the iront ligure will be operated in 'iulation or wagon puliing activity and the rar ligure will be operated in simulation oit wagon pushing activity.
