PUMPING JACK FOR DEEP WELLS.

This invention relates to pumping jacks for deep wells, such as oil wells and has for an important object thereof the provision of a structure eliminating the necessity for the use of mud sills or other means of support for the jack.
In the ordinary pumping jack, due to the lack of proper balance or compensation of the forces in the jack, the jack has a tendency to pull in one direction, with the result that it becomes necessary to employ some sort of a support resisting this pull. These supports, generally known as mud sills, are usually in the form of heavy beams seated upon the ground and accordingly during the winter seasons, when the ground is soft and hard in a rapid succession of changes, the position of these sills is shifted, throwing the jack out of proper alignment with the cable employed for operating the same, so that a tremendous strain is set up not only against the several parts of the jack but likewise against the rods which the jack is shifting. Accordingly, an important object of this invention is the provision of a device which is so counterbalanced that it may be supported from the only naturally available support for such devices, the casing head of the well.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character giving a straight line movement to the pumping rods eliminating any necessity for expensive bearings or the like to compensate for the differential movement common to most pumping jacks.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be very readily and cheaply constructed, which will be durable and eflicient in service and a general improvement in the art.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in. the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of-illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a jack constructed in accordance with my invention;

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates the casing head of an oil well. These casing heads, as is well known to those familiar with the art, embody two or more outlets 11 and 12 for the purpose of carrying off gases or oil which may flow up between the casing 13 and tubing 14 of the well. The upper end of the casing head is formed with a peripheral flange 15 leaving an upwardly facing shoulder 16 upon which seats the casing head top 1'? having a central opening for the passage of a tubing coupling 18. The casing head top 17 is of less diameter than the internal diameter of the flange 15, so that an annular space in the form of a groove 19 is provided.
In accordance with my invention, I thread into the outlet 11 a coupling 20 preferably including valve 21 and into the outer end of this coupling I thread a brace 22 which extends upwardly and outwardly from the casing head at an angle of approximately 15 thereto. At the outer end of this brace is secured a fitting 23 having a socket 24: receiving the outer end of the brace and other sockets 25 at opposite sides of the first named socket for receiving the lower ends, of upwardly inclining braces 26, the upper ends of which are in turn secured to the up per ends of vertically extending braces 27. This fitting 23 further embodies a horizontally directed eye 28, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
The lower ends of the vertically extending braces 27 are flattened to fit within the grooves 1.9 and have these flattened portions curved to correspond to the curvature of this groove, as indicated at 29. The connection between the upper ends of the vertical braces and the upwardly inclining braces 26 is in the form of a fitting 30 which, in addition to providing couplings in which the braces 26 and 27 are engageable, provides a horizontally directed eye 31.
These eyes 31 at the upper ends of the connections 30 align with one another and each receive a pivot 32 upon which a beam 33 is pivoted intermediate its ends. beams are preferably in the form of bent levers and each have at opposite ends thereof bearings 34, and 85 for the reception of the ends or pivots 36 and 37. Upon the pivot 37 is mounted a second beam 38, the
connection'being at the center of the beam 38. One end of this beam 38, which Will These hereinafter be referred to as the lower end, is connected by a link 39 with a pivot 40 seated in the outlet opening 12 of the casing head and providing a plug for this opening. Pivoted upon the ends of a pivot directed through the fitting 23 are the ends of the arms 41 of a U-shaped yoke, the bight of which is adapted for connection with a pull line 42 and with links 43 connecting this yoke with the upper end of the beam 38 at id. The eye 28 has directed therethrough a pivot 45 engaging the lower end of a link 26, the upper end of which pivotally engages in the bearing provided at one end of a third beam l3. This beam is provided centrally with a bearing 49 through which the pivot 35 is directed and the free end of the beam, which operates above the casing head and intern'iediate the beams 33, is formed to provide a means for connecting the upper ends oi the sucker rod 5O. as at 51.
In practice, the links l3, when the sucker rod 50 is at the approximate center of its stroke, should be at approximately 45 to the horizontal, as I have found that with a horizontally pulling cable, these links, when disposed at this angle, give the most efficient results and reduce the side strain of the pumping apparatus to a negligible factor. It will be obvious that when strain is placed upon the cable or pull rod 42, there will be a tendency to straighten the connection between the links a3 and the pull rod resisted by the link d1, with the result that this link applies an upward strain to the outer end of the supporting framework represented by the braces 25, 26 and 27, while the downward pull exerted by the links 43 upon the beam 38 exercises a downward pull on this framework at the opposite side of the vertical braces from the point at which the upward thrust is applied by the links 43 and pull rod 42. This tends to cause the framework to move upwardly at the fitting 23, but this is counteracted by reason of the fact that the entire weight of the well pumping rods is placed against his fitting 23 by the link 46. This is also resisted by the link 39, so that the result is a pumping jack whose forces are so distributed that there is practically no side strain or pull noticeable when the device is in operation. Furthermore, a straight line movement tor pumping rods is obtained, as it will be obvious that the rod engaging end of the beam 4-8 is actuated by and operates about the pivot 36, so that if the rod is engaged with the arm 48 in alignment with the pivots 32, the arcuate movements of the beams 33 and 4.8 will counteract one another, the beam 4-8 shifting with the link 46 as a support.
Since the construction hereinbetore set forth is obviously capable of a certain range of change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of the in vention, I do not limit myself to such spocilic structure exceptas hereinafter claimed.

In combination with a reciprocating pump rod, a beam centrally pivoted upon an axis perpendicular to the rod, a second beam pivoted at its center to one end of the first named beam and engaging the pump rod with one end thereof, the first named beam between its central pivot and said end being of the same length as the last named beam between its pivot and the point where it engages the pump rod, a link pivoted at one end upon a suitable support and at its opposite cnd to the second end 01"- the lastmuned beam, means operatively engaged with the opposite end oi": the first named beam for rocking the beam upon its pivot including a third beam pivoted at its center to the last named end of the first beam, a link conuection between one end of the last named beam and. a second fixed support, a yoke pivoted to the first named fixed support and depending therefrom, said yoke being adapted for connection with a pull line and a link connecting said yoke and the opposite end of the third beam.
2. The combination with a well casing head having diametrically opposed threaded openings in its side walls and a vertically reciprocable pump rod extended through the casing head, of operating mechanism for the pump rod including a vertical brace having its lower end seated upon the casing head. and at its upper end provided with a pivot perpendicular to the axis of the pump rod, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends on said pivot, a second brace secured in one of said threaded openings, a third brace secured at one end to the upper end of the vertical brace, a connection between the opposite ends of the second and third braces, a link pivoted at its lower end to the connection, a second lever pivoted at one end to the upper end of the link, intern'iediatc its ends to the end of the first named lever and at its opposite end to the pump rod and means for rocking the first named lever.

The combination with a well casing head having diametrically opposed threaded openings in its side walls and a vertically reciprocable pump rod extended through the casing head, of operating mechanism for the pump rod including a vertical. brace ha ving its lower end seated upon the casing head and at its upper end provided with a pivot. perpendicular to the axis of the pump rod, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends on said pivot, a second brace secured in one of said threaded openings, a third brace secured at one end to the upper end of the vertical brace, a connection between the opposite ends of the second and third braces, a link pivoted at its lower end to the connectii'm, a
second lever pivoted atone end to the upper end of the link, intermediate its ends to the end of the first named lever and at its opposite end to the pump rod and means for rocking the first named lever applying upward strain to the connection between the second and third braces.
