DOOBCHECK.
I Application filed August 19, 1925. Serial No. 51,224.
My invention relates to improvements in door checks, and it consists in the combina-v tlons, constructions and'arrangements here in described and claimed. I I An object of the invention is the provision of a simple. reliable and highly efiicient door check which will afi'ord' facilitiestor checking the swlnering movement of a door to which it has been' applied so thatithe door vwill remain in a position to which ithas been swung and W111 be prevented'from swinging rapidly from open to closed'position or vice versa, thus precluding slamming of the door either to closed or fully. open position;
A further object of the invention is the provision of a door checkof the character described which will take up but little space, will be inconspicuous and will not offer any obstruction to passage through the doorway.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in whichv Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view 25 showing a practical embodiment of the in vention. operatively applied to a door and frame construction.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section throughthe door check. s
Figure 3 is arelatively enlarged vertical section through an adjusting screw of the door check, showing in side elevation a vmem- "b'e'r-for turning the adjusting screw. s Figure 4 is a perspective group view of certain partsotthe door check separated from each other. 1
Figure 5 is a showing a second form er door ch'e -bodying the same invention. i rigate}? is' 'ai fragmentary rasure-sa 'aperspectiv of the seed bear. my aperspectiyevie f iev ,nwahing'za rhiehea z 'se eachi'of-the' two "i of the invention winch V ai illust ted ih*the drawing In Figure"1,"I shown do'o e i e. ew t tal; @1 11. b which'i'scomprisedijin'the It I i on -wh1ch taper ngtubular outer ITCtlQ vertic"alfsect n i at the uppertached to a frame 2 by means of ajhingewhich is of the loose-pin type of construction having alinedsleeve portions 3 and P respectively attheirgadjacent edges through whicha. pin may extend. l The hinge leaf 3 is attached by screws 5 to, an edge ofthe door 1,while the hinge leaf 4' isattachedby screws 64 to the tranoeQ. i
In carrying out the invention I replace the usual pin for connecting the leaves 3-and 4 by a pin 7 which extends through the alined Y sleeve portions 3 'and' 4 ofthe hinge leaves and 1s enlarged ad acent to its upper end;
and above the upper sleeveportion of the hinge to provide a" frusto-conical or up-' wardly tapering head portion 8-which is merged at its lower end'into a neck portion 9 Ellld'WhlChl terminates at 1t-s upper end in a reduced portion].(). The neck portion 9 is non-circular 1n cross sectlonal contour; and
' of the pin being projected through the open-j ing 11 beforethe pin is inserted "in the alined sleeve portions of the" hinge sleeves. 1 The the arm is apertured as at 1 8 for the reception ofscrews 19 forsecurmg the arm 15 to the adjacent edge of the door 1.
' A pressure transmitting washer 20 .is slidable on the'reduced upper end portion '10 ort the pin and is held against turning on the reduced upper end portion 10 of thep'in by reason of the engagement of av projection 21 which extends inwardlyfrom the inner wall of the washer 20 with a flattened por tion 22 on the periphery of the reduced up per end portion 10'. A pressure adjusting screw 23 has a shank adapted for threaded engagement with an internally threaded axial socket 24'. which ext-ends in the pm through the reduced upper end portion 10 and into the head 8. The pressure adjustingrscrew has a head indicated at 24 which is adapted, when the screw is tightened, to contact with the Washer 26 and to transmit motion through the latter to the outer trio.
'It is manifest that-this friction will tend to check the swinging movement-of the door since the inner friction member is held, against turning relatively to the axis of the pin 7 while the outer friction member is permitted to turn under stress about the axis of the :pin but the turning movement of the outer friction member is yieldingly resisted because of the friction between the associated friction members. This resist-;
ance, of course, can be increased within lim its by tightening the ad usting screw 23.
In other 'WO1ClS,-i3l16 inner friction member is held substantially rigid withone of the hinge leaves while the outer friction member is secured to the same member as the other hinge "leaf and thereforeswinging movement of the hinge -leaves l towards or away from each other will be attended by friction which will check such swinging movement.
The head 2d of the adjusting screw 23 may be castellated and the adjusting screw may support a member for turning the screw, this member being shown as a rod comprising a lower section 25 and an. upper section 26v -hingedto each other atytheir adjacent ends and being slidable in a ,bore 27 which extends axially of the adjusting screw, the lower section 25 having ahead at :28 at its lower end for engaging with a stop-2Q to limit the axial movement of the rod26-25 upward in the bore of the adjusting screw. The length of the lower sec- "tion 25-of the screw-operating rod is approximately the same as the distance from they stopw29rto theplane of the :upper face of the head thehscrew,whereby the upper section of the screw-operating rod can be swung laterallyto position to extend'in 7 any one of the radial grooves 30 in the upper side of the head of the screw when the screw-operating rod is in raised position, and a relatively great leverage then can be obtained for turning the screw by manipulating the upper sectionot the rod in the.
manner of a handle, the upper section of the rod being formed with a knob 3lat its The device when applied to a door and frame construction takes up but very little space, does not detract from the appearance of the door "or tend to obstruct passagethrough the doorway. nc intermediatefriction member 14 is the only member of the device upon which any appreciable wear will take place and this member can be replaced when required quickly and easily and sli-gl-r't cost. Since the intermediate friction member 1 1 is made of leather, it is obvious that the function-- ing of thedevice will be attended by but very little, if a ny, noise. I
In the form of the device exhibited in Figures (Sand 7, the hinge leaf & of the preferred form of the device is replaced by a hinge leaf designated 32 which differs from the hinge leaf 4 only in that it has :a
notch or notches at 33 in its upper sleeveportion, indicated at 32%, at the inner edge thereof and through which the pin tor connecting the hinge leaf 32 to the hinge J. .leaf 3 extends. This pin is designated r as 1n the preferred form of the device .and the non-circular neck portion 9 of the pin en gages with the notch or notches '33 to prevent turning of the pin '7 about its axis relatively to the axial line of the sleeve portions 32 of the hinge leaf 32, whereby the pin 7; including the head portion 8 thereof, is substantially rigid with the hingeleaf :32. The attaching-arm 12 of the preferred form of the device therefore is omitted from the second form of the-device. The remaining elements of the second form of the device are identical with corresponding elements of the preferred form of thedevice and therefore will not be described herein, the. same reference nun'lerals having been used to indicate like parts of the two forms of the device throughout the several views of the drawings. 7 r
The operation of the modified or second iorm ot the device is identical in essentiaj respects with theoperation .oi the preferred form of the device. V 7 Obviously, the invention is susceptible of embodiment in formszother than those which are illustrated in the accompanying .drawings,
thereol aslfairly fall within the'scope of the appended claims. 7 i
and I therefore consider .as my own all such modifieations. and adaptations "'Whatlclaimisr r .l.
