Description
Deer 7 G. D. ATWQOD BOTTLE CLOSURE Filed July 2, 19'24 ?atented Deco W26 ENE STTfl no'r'rL-n cnosnnn.
Application filed July 2,
example, for the removal of portions oftheir contents, from time to time, as required for use.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a Closure which will have all the sanitaryqualities of those now in use and,
in addition, ease of manipulation, durability, and cheapness of manufacture.
In the accompanying draw1ng- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a portion of a bottle provided with a closure em-' bodying the improvements of the present invention, the closure being shown in closed position and locked to the bottle; I
Figure 2 is a similar view,-with 'theclosure shown unlocked and ready forlocking to or removal from the bottle;
Figure 3 is a vertical section and Fi ure 4 a plan view of one of the two mem ers of theclosure; and
Figure 5 is a vertical section and Figure 6 a plan view of the other member of the closure.
Referring to said drawing A represents the bottle cap proper and B a carrier there- 'for. The cap A fits loosely in the carrier so that the two are relatively movable to a substantial extent endwise or downwardly and upwardly.
The cap A, which is provided with the usual sealing disk a of cork or other suitable material, has a depending flange b which is slit vertically at many points to render it radially resilient. 7 At the lower end of this flange there are provided outwardly extending beads or projections a for a purpose which will presently be stated. 1 Y
The carrier B, principally for sanitary reasons, is cup-shaped so as to not only carry but also completely close or cover the cap A. It is also preferably provided with a handle d. v
It has a depending solid orradially rigid flange e, which is strai ht for the greater portion of its height. t its lower end this flange is provided with a cam portion f and, below that, with an inwardly extending head or projection g;
' Whenthe cap andcarrier are assembled 1924. Serial No. 723,815.
the beads or projections c on the former are positioned between the flange f and inwardly projecting portion 9 of the carrier.
lVhen the closureis placed upon a bottle and the carrier B is forced downwardly, the cam f thereof, engaging the projections 0, will bend the flange b of the cap inwardly under the li of the bottle. The straight vertical portion of the flange, then coming in line with the projections 0, will prevent outward radial movement of flange Z) and thereby lock the cap A to the lip of the bottle. 7 j
When it is desired to remove the cap from the bottle the carrier is lifted and as the straight portion of cam 6 leaves the projections 0, flange b will spring outward and thus unlock the cap fronrthe bottle lip.
On the further upward movement of the carrier the bead orprojection g at its lower end will. engage the beads or projections 0 and lift the cap from the bottle.
-What I claim is.
1. A bottle closure comprising a cap having a depending radially-resilient flanged portion for interlocking with the bottle top, and a carrier enclosing and carrying the cap and movable endwise relatively thereto in a substantially straight line, said cap and car- ,rier being provided with co-operating means for bending the flange of the cap inwardly and looking it around the bottle top on rela tive downward movement of the carrier and for lifting it from the bottle top on. the reverse movement of the carrier. I
2. A bottle closure comprising a cap having a depending radially-resilient flanged portion for interlocking with the bottle top, and a carrier enclosing and carrying the cap and movable endwise relatively thereto, said flanged portion of the cap being provided with outwardly extending'projections and said carrier with a depending flange having a cam portion andabove it a straight portion for engaging said projections and respectively bending the flanged portion of the cap inwardly around the bottle top and looking it thereto on relative downward movement of'the carrier, and with an inwardly extending projection for engaging the projections aforesaid and lifting the cap from the bottle top on the reverse movement of the carrier.
3. A bottle closure comprising a ca havj ections c and said carrier with a flange ing a depending radially-resilient anged having a cam portion f and above it a portion for interlocking with the bottle top, straight portion and below itan inwardly it and a carrier enclosing and carrying the cap; extending projection g.
'5 and movable endwise relatively thereto in In testimony whereof, I have hereunt a substantially straight line said flanged Set IV-ha portion of the cap being provided with pro- GEO. D, ATWOOD.
